I've always said the reason this film works so well is because everyone treats it like its a real situation. Nobody immediately jumps to the assumption that Regan is possesed. Her mom does everything that a real mother would do in this situation, doctors, hospitals, therapists, psychologists, etc. So when she begs Father Karras about an exorcism, it comes as a last resort. But even then, Karras doesnt wanna do it because he doesnt think she's actually possessed and needs medical help instead. That's what makes this film so smart to me at least

That is one of the biggest themes in Blatty's trilogy of books he wrote for this series. The Exorcist is about proving the existence of evil, The Ninth Configuration is about themes of redemption and proving that good still exists in the world to a degree, and Exorcist 3 Legion is about the battle between good and evil.

Indeed. It's way more deeper than people give it credit for. When I tell people I highly rank it and find it inspiring they look at me like i'm crazy but Father K's arc is one of the best I've ever seen told. He endures a living emotional hell the entire movie only to give everything up to save the life of that girl, and he looked a demon in the face and wasn't scared of it. One of the more heroic moments in a movie.

My kid and I have a theory that the new Exorcist movie is actual a sequel to Repossessed. The reason is that the devil kid in the new movie refers to Regan being in danger again, and the only movie she really got repossessed in was, well, Repossessed. We're hoping that in the movie's finale (shown in detail in the trailer because this is modern day, and you can't have a trailer without showing the whole movie) a CGI Leslie Neilsen will save both kids. It might wind up being like the ending to the new Ghostbusters.

This is one of your best Snob! The original 1973 is perfect in every aspect: editing, sound design, cinematography, acting, direction, etc…. Friedkin’s film is a masterpiece. I am not a fan of the later releases, which I think ruin the perfectly paced structure of ‘73, has an opening shot in G-Town that undermines the later fade from Iraq with the sound of fighting dogs to MacNeil house and the Casablanca-lite ending undermines the dread of the film’s atmosphere and even if it was Blatty’s preferred ending (and fits into his two directorial efforts) Friedkin’s ambiguity in 1973 allows the audience to contemplate what they just went through and dwell on the questions of faith, evil, and redemption for themselves. Original ‘Friedkin’ is the best. RIP Billy.

Disagree. The 2000 release was perfectly paced, and the theater exploded in terror, followed by relieved laughter and applause at the re-inserted special effects sequences. They loved it. It was excellent, and it's the version we watch every Halloween to this day.

I prefer the '73 theatrical release over the "extended cut". I was at the Powell book store in Portland talking with Bill Blatty's oldest son, Micheal - and the 2000 version came up. He too preferred the original release over the extended cut. He even told Friedkin that. Lol

I remember when "The Version You've Never Seen" came out in '99 and there was banter about that modern audiences laughed at the scary parts. I know films like Exorcist and Halloween can become so ingrained in the pop culture zietgeist that people are too familiar with them and it lessens the impact of the movie. STILL, man this is one helluva film. It's like JAWS. Even if the shark just swam out to see I'm fully invested in following our three main guys on the boat. In Alien, even if the xenomorph never shows up I want to see what's up with this crew for 90 minutes. And Exorcist. Even if Regan is faking, I want to see what happens with Father Karris and his crisis of faith and cut over to see what Father Marin is up to for two hours. The shark, the alien and the demon are just icing on the cake.

I felt like the whole "walk down the stairs" bit that was added back in just didn't cut it and kind of detracted from the atmosphere. No lie, some time back my local theatre ran The Exorcist during Halloween. It was actually pretty good on a big screen. But there was one scene that had us all rolling in the aisles, mostly because it dated the movie SO MUCH. When Chris is in the hospital talking to the doctor, and the doctor oh so nonchalantly lights up a cigarette and smokes it right freaking there! It's not just a great horror film. It's among the best films, period. What did Friedkin say about the success of the film? To paraphrase, that at its heart it isn't really a horror film, it's a film about love. People understand that on a basic level, and the authenticity of its approach to this, is what's missing in any of these schlock exorcism movies of the past twenty years. It's why none of them work.

I'm so glad you remembered Repossessed exists. I know it's a silly movie, but it somehow became a comfort for me. It also has a lot of some of my first exposure to gay humor, and nicely didn't resort to nasty epithets, which was different from a LOT of its contemporaries. Linda Blair did comedy well in it. The elevator bit near the beginning always makes me laugh. She's an underappreciated actor, I think. It's kind of funny, I can take or leave The Exorcist, but I am very fond of Repossessed. It also introduced me to the truly magnificent work of musical art, "Pump Up The Jam", which has seen greater appreciation in recent years. Good.

A month shy of my 40th birthday and I still have yet to see any but bits and pieces from "the exorcist". Not being raised a catholic or evangelical Christian I've just never found anything to do with demons or ghosts interesting enough to catch my attention. I still vividly remember how incredibly let down I was a teen when it turned out the creatures from event horizon were just hellspawn. I think it has to do with the fact I'm not worried in the slightest about my eternal soul since I wasn't raised to believe I had one. I do appreciate seeing how catholic iconography was seen in the popular zeitgeist of the time and what has changed since then and what has stayed the same and hearing about it from a lapsed catholic is very informative.

This is definitely a great movie, but I hate the scene of Regan getting operated on. Needle scenes in movies always make me physically uncomfortable. Hopefully nothing like that is in the new ones.

The 1970s was such an interesting time for horror. And a lot of that has to do with the sense of innocence there still was in society in the 70s and how horror as we would recognize it today was in its infancy. Films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Exorcist tame compared to todays standards but one film being perceived as the goriest film ever and the other being such an intense experience for moviegoers back then people genuinely thought that Linda Blair was possessed by the devil.

Last house on the left, Texas chainsaw massacre and Halloween came out in the 70s

@@makaveli4205 I’m aware and did mention Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But I wanted to spotlight certain 70s horror films that really messed moviegoers up because of how gritty or how real it felt to them back then. That sort of feeling is gone today because of how used to it people are compared to how they were when these films came out in the 70s.

I'd disagree with the assertion that the 70s were a more innocent time for film. 70s movies often have a lot of excesses that are relatively uncommon today. In terms of violence, sexuality, etc... I'm 25 and a lot of 70s thrillers have made me uncomfortable due to sudden, straight shot violent scenes that include elements of degradation and deliberate cruelty (as in how the characters were acting). And I like 70s movies!
@steely3506
@steely3506 Жыл бұрын
A lot of protagonists in 70s action and thrillers come across as very cold, even a little unhinged. Not necessarily a bad thing but "innocent" isn't a word I'd use to describe those films. 70s horror also had extreme films like Last House on the Left and Cannibal Holocaust. A byproduct of a generation watching real war footage from Vietnam, to some extent.

If I recall correctly, the Captain Howdy faces were originally makeup tests with Eileen Dietz (Blair's stunt double). That makeup was the original design for the last scenes of possessed Reagan.

This and the original Japanese Ringu are tied for the two scariest movies I've ever seen. Hereditary is a close second. I usually just watch horror movies for fun, but those three really make it feel like there's an evil presence in the room with me.

honestly i thought the film was just fine when I saw it about a decade ago but I've been looking to re-visit it to see what I missed in its classic status, particularly with the upcoming release of Believer (as made by the people that gave us a mediocre Halloween trilogy)

Personally, I rewatch the Exorcist because of the drama and adult characters trying to solve the situation. The priest character is one of my all time favorites in movies in general. Outside of being a horror movie, it's got a compelling narrative.

Honestly, I paid extra to see this on the big screen... WORTH IT! Even though I saw it a lot as a kid, I wasn't born when the movie was out so I never saw it on the big screen. I'm so happy that I did, also I realized what I super fan I am of this movie every time I smacked my girl's leg when I wanted to squee but couldn't. lol This is by far my favorite horror movie.
