Don't discount the fact that a woman in her "situation" and having access to men with valuable secret info is in a precarious position ...She would have,could have been accused of espionage just for that reason alone..for "fraternizing" at the very least.We may never be privy to the actual truth.
@whazzuphere2 жыл бұрын
That war was unbelievable. France executed many of their own men for not going "over the top"...climbing out of trenches and charging across barbed wired strewn fields with machine guns cutting them down by the hundreds, if not thousands. Troops had a choice: over the top or face a firing squad. The fact they shot a suspected Dutch spy is not surprising in the least.

The French in particular should made to bear awful responsibility for setting up the conditions That led to world war from 1914 to 1945. Butthurt from their drubbing in 1870-71, they desired "ravange", but used Great Britain and the US to obtain it, since they were not effective enough to take on Germany by themselves. In 1919, Clemenceau dictated terms (won largely by the blood of allies) that ensured continued conflict. Mata Hari was one more hapless victim of French incompetence.

I have seen it argued that she was less innocent and more incompetent as a spy. Less James Bond and more "in over her head." I haven't decided if I agree with this position. @garypautard106911 күн бұрын
I have read a biography of MH and it seems she was a childlike person who just wanted to be surrounded by pretty clothes etc. What is not mentioned here is her children . One child died but her daughter was with her Father who was awarded custody. Mata Hari several times tried to re-gain custody of her daughter but Maclouds lawyers used her dancing against her claiming Mata Hari was a woman of dubious virtue . Her daughter died shortly after and Mata Hari was getting older and she was surrounded by younger imitators copying her act. As WW1 progressed Mata found herself alone and penny less.
@gerardleahy69463 жыл бұрын
Her trial was a sham and would not stand up to any objective legal scrutiny. All accused should be afforded the right to defend themselves especially where the potential sentence is severe. Mata Hari strikes me as something of a bimbo but was scapegoated. Her killing was not justified.

I had read that Mata Hari remained standing briefly after receiving the full impact of the fusillade from the firing squad before collapsing to the ground. Afterward Mata Hari was dissected and her head was preserved and put on display for several years. But it disappeared at some point and is apparently lost forever. The rest of her remains apparently were not given a proper burial either. A sad state of affairs for somebody who led an unfortunate life and was a rather feckless spy who served as a convenient scapegoat to cover for the recklessness and incompetence of the French military during WWI.

One thing you haven't really touched on was just how important her execution was at the time for keeping the war going. France was really ready for packing up. The country was in a right mess. Mutiney and recent big military failures had a negative effect on the country. The French were war weary. Similar to blaming a witch for your bad luck and killing her in order to reverse it, the French did the same with Mata Hari. Sounds silly today but it was a huge boost for the French. Also don't forget someone stole her head from the museum and her body was turned over to science.

When will we ever learn? Read Alice Miller's "For your own good" where she analyses the childhood of destructive people like Adolf Hitöer. Universal Soldier He's five feet two, and he's six feet four He fights with missiles and with spears He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen He's been a soldier for a thousand years He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew And he knows he shouldn't kill, and he knows he always will Kill you for me, my friend, and me for you And he's fighting for Canada, he's fighting for France He's fighting for the USA And he's fighting for the Russians, and he's fighting for Japan And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way And he's fighting for democracy, he's fighting for the reds He says it's for the peace of all He's the one who must decide who's to live and who's to die And he never sees the writing on the wall But without him how would Hitler Have condemned him at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone He's the one who gives his body as a weapon of the war And without him all this killing can't go on He's the universal soldier, and he really is to blame But his orders come from far away no more They come from him and you and me And, brothers, can't you see This is not the way we put an end to war?

I don't think Mata-Hari was a spy.Her whole life is full of tragedies. Her husband, who drank and raised his hand against her, did not like her. She outlived her children. It seems to me that her husband's bad attitude towards her pushed Mata-Hari to the path she chose.Again, it is very significant that none of her lovers demanded her body and buried her with dignity.Only everyone used her: her husband, who humiliated and beat her, other men who used her and at the end of her life simply betrayed her.The way she was accused of being an alleged spy.I see her as a victim of circumstances.She was just unlucky enough to become a scapegoat for the incompetence of the French authorities and command.

She was most definitely a scapegoat. At the time this took place, any woman who lived life on her own terms was viewed as a threat to men & society in general. Many people might know this ~ Women were still viewed as property in the USA for 100 years after the abolishment of slavery. The rest of the world was far behind this. Some countries still have laws that women are property. Any woman who lives life on her own terms is viewed as a threat. If Mata Hari had truly been a spy, she would have been made to suffer for 60 days prior to execution, she would be dressed in a very flimsy, see through gown & would be required to have a blindfold, she would not have been given a choice. The men who were made to participate in these firing squads often developed severe emotiional problems afterward. Mata Hari's wrongful death ended right there, the men in the firing squad would endure so much suffering for the rest of their lives.
