This is one of my favourite season finales of any show in recent memory. That sheer sense of fucking *awe* when the gates opened, as the implications of having the network active again and available to humanity sunk in, that was such a perfect conclusion to the rollercoaster of a season this was. Even having read the book, I was amazed, and I am so grateful for the team behind this series, as they prove time and time again that they really get the source material - and never as much as with the work they did with Ashford, who is such a fascinating character in the show, played to perfection by David Strathairn. The Expanse really is one of the best things to happen to sci-fi, and I'm glad to have witnessed you two experiencing the ride.

the only Science Fiction program that I would rank above it is BABYLON 5. A show imagined, crated, executed, and completed thru the genius of ONE MAN. ANd he only eve intended for it to be 5 seasons/arcs. It is apparently coming to HBO Max before too long, so WATCH IT IF YOU CAN. It absoutely and LITERALLY changed the way I think about sime profound things ever since. My favorite words of wisdom/epiphany: [Understanding is a 3-edged sword] spoken by an ancient alien speaking to Human commander of station. We didnt get the explanation until season 4 pivotal moment when said commander has the epiphany: "Your side, their side, AND THE TRUTH" All 3 play part of cutting into whatever the problem is that requires understanding.

I started watching the show a few months after it was canceled and saved. I didn't payed enough attention because I had decided not to watch anything from SYFY after they canceled Dark Matter. But then my girlfriend told me about it and I decided to give a chance. I remember that during those final moments of this episode, from the rings opening, to cut to black, it was a feeling of epic that I didn't felt in a long time on a TV show. Marvelous.

The question is what could possibly kill a civilization that is so advanced that it created a proto molecule and the ring gate technology and settled 1000s of solar systems, remember many were destroyed. Ashford. For a while he was the perfect boss. Measured, insightful, restrained when appropriate, able to lead by example and motivate others to do their best voluntarily without threat. Then he shot Grigori for disputing him openly, and turned a corner. Even so, his rationale for destroying the ring was sound and easily-relatable. It's no surprise so many followed him willingly. But in his way, he was guilty of the same limited reasoning that others had been regarding the Protomolecule. Even worse, since he had at his fingertips the evidence that the Protomolecule operated on a scale that could not be fathomed by limited mortals. His plan was flawed, because he insisted on thinking of the ring, the nucleus, the Protomolecule, as objects, finite and separate, that could be acted upon independently. He did not consider that, just as the Protomolecule coordinates with other pieces of itself over vast distances, that an assault on the ring would also constitute an assault on the nucleus, and on any other Protomolecule tech anywhere else. But Ashford didn't have the benefit of Holden's inside track on the Protomolecule. He did the best he could with what was available to him.

Drummer's 9 lives. She "ain't no cat, she's a battlecat". Agree, the ring, the nucleus once powered up by Holden was swiftly thrown into in a defense posture and when the threat was gone it immediately went into what it was supposed to do...giving way to all of these other systems. I think Ashford killing that guy, while ultimately not the right thing in light of the overall outcome, was probably justified. Quelling what was most likely a mutiny in progress which is basically traitorous, which in many cases throughout even our real world and it's military, is punishable by death...on site, on sight at the moment during wartime or conflict. Onward to season 4. "Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Rocinate. Its five-year...wait no, it's continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before."

@KatSonny

The Mass Effect trilogy came out in 2007, 2010, 2012, whereas Leviathan (first book) came out in 2011. Unless the Mass Effect creators actually worked on The Expanse MMO before the stories became books, that is not entirely true. However, I think the Creators/developers of ME:Andromeda said that The Expanse and Firefly was a clear inspiration and reference point for the game.

It was the best season of this brilliant sf series. BTW Doesn't it feel more like Star Trek than the recent shows which are supposed to be Star Treks? We have peaceful solutions winning, we have facing the great unknown and that communication is the key to understand it, we certainly don't have a Federation, but it doesn't seem preachy when showing how bad some things are in this future. Drummer understanding that Holden is not just mad thanks to the Belter slang he quoted but could't know himself was mentioned, but there are so many larger and smaller gems hidden in this episode. Redemption is interesting arc in the last episode of season 3. Ashford feels strong about it even if he doesn't say a lot about it. Clarissa Mao obviously does something half-suicidal just to have a chance for redemption and they both meet face to face. Am I one of those very few who actually quite like Diogo? Dickish character certainly but how many ordinary, avarage Belters do we know? A guy from the gutter (quite literally) of Ceres, left stranded in space by his uncle, saved by Miller (twice), young and rash. And full of anger so much he had to get involved with Dawes - perhaps like young Naomi or Drummer were in the past. He is pretty much screaming 'angry Belter' especially with this huge face tattoo. I think he could get much worse, or simply needs a guiding hand - even Miller could be the one if he stayed alive long enough. You could see that the entire Belter nation can be seen in this way by Earth or Mars. Thanks and stay healthy guys!

The Ring Station (Nucleus as you call it) was in lockdown mode (all rings closed) and waiting for a signal to return to normal operation. Signal which never came. Then we threatened it and it started defending itself. ProtoMiller was able to lift the lockdown only when the threat disappeared. Anna & Clarissa are in Roci's medbay, everyone (almost) is returning home via Sol ring including Roci. Which is natural after such hellish experience, and to treat wounded and resupply too. You're kinda right about Ashford, his role was expanded in the show and he is a better character compared to his book counterpart.

I noticed something about my own positive reactions to sci-fi like "The Expanse": I think on some subconscious level it has also to do with colour schemes. I told you this finale would take you through all the feelz. This was the most satisfying "series finale" I've seen in years. Proto-Miller is a tool, "The Investigator," of the Protomolecule machine that is itself a tool designed to build a ring and signal back to its creators. The control module within the ring is itself yet another tool, a "Gate Controller," which at some point had the task of exterminating systems that had become dangerous and then shut down all the rest of the rings...until the long-lost ring in the Solar System made a new call to it. But my point is that each of these Protomolecule elements is a tool designed for a particular role and doesn't necessary have full information about the Builders. I'd also strongly recommend "White Flag || The Women of the Expanse" on KZbin.

I think a big part of Ashford’s resistance to the idea of shutting down the reactor was that they couldn’t do both. Shut down the reactor, and if that doesn’t work, they might not be able to get everything back up and running again to go with the laser plan before the ring station finished charging and snuffed out the sun. Hell, the Behemoth lost all power the first time they tried firing a torpedo - it was plagued with technical problems for basically the entire season.

They should have shown “The Expanse” titlecard when the gates opened because everything before this was basically a prologue 😅

Your wide eyed, slacked jawed reactions were epic!! Your analysis post ep also epic!! The next season, no spoilers, is both a smaller story, just involving small groups if people while still forwarding the overarching meta story. But the focus is on people, which is what makes good sci-fi, how humans act within technological changes.

Sonny, you can call him "proto-Miller". I think that's what the fandom uses.

The best thing to call this apparition of Miller is "The Investigator". Season 4 will explore his nature further.

Season 3 is so good overall. The first 3 seasons are prequel. Season 4 is intro season. I binged season 4 in 3 days, it's a bit slower then season 3 but i enjoyed it a lot and you can see the production cost and quality is better since they got picked up by Amazon. If the show stayed cancelled it still had a very good ending but i would have been so upset, like Firefly. Season 5 can't come fast enough. xD

Nucleus not behind miller the Terran Solar System Phoebe (Mars moon) protomolecule is "behind" miller, or create miller whn it reached that level of development from Miller and maybe some Julie in there. On Venus, as part of the Terran Ring.
