The reason the main crew changed their name was because they were hiding that they were a non-affiliated gunship in a war-zone. After Holden launches missiles at a UN navy ship to save Avasarala, there's really no use trying to hide what/who they are anymore

When Nguyen was introduced, I didn't really paid attention on him. He was just your typical Tough Military Officer guy. Then he went to the Agatha King and took over control from Souther and I didn't liked him. Then we learn he lost many of his man during the Calisto incident (which I didn't read the books yet, but from what I got, it's like UN-Mars version of the Cuban Missile Crisis), and I kinda understood him. Then he killed Souther. And I just despised him with all strength since. He says he's doing the best for Earth, yet he kills a bunch of good men and women with far more honor than he ever had, that would obey, fight and die for people like him and he just killed them without thinking twice. He's the absolute worst.

My first impression of Nguyen, in the U.N. war room, was "paranoid, irresponsible little dipstick." (Well, to be honest, that last word should be a tad saltier, but I try to restrain myself in polite company.) Everything I've seen of him since only confirms that diagnosis. So when Boyer tells his little Nguyen-worship campfire story in the officer's mess, I think what kind of man would have been the one to have "twitched" and started the shooting between 5 UNN ships and 1 MCRN cruiser that left all of the UNN ships crippled and 29 fellow sailors breathing the vacuum. Somebody with an itchy trigger finger. Maybe some paranoid, irresponsible little dipstick? Seems reasonable to me.

Some of my favorite characters in the show (people who help in saving all human life, without ever knowing or getting credit) are the side characters. The two officers in this episode who made a move to stop Nguyen. The Martian Officer who saved the crew in the first season, episode 4. The Belter who helped Naomi manage the evacuation and then stayed behind. So many people whose most heroic moments won't be in history books, even though they should be.

I always look forward to your reactions (The Expanse and The Witcher, currently). You both are very smart and insightful. I gain knowledge by experiencing these shows along with you. You are correct. It is amazing how quickly we grew to love the people on the Agatha King UN ship. Souther’s end really hurt. Such a good man, trying to do the RIGHT thing. Also, the captain of the MCRN ship was really smart. Her actions SAVED many people’s lives (on both sides). I liked it when she asked the kid that had met the Undersecretary his thoughts on her. “She was sort of mean, but I liked her.” I really liked that scene. The idea that Naomi should have talked to the crew BEFORE she gave the sample to the Belt. We all know, that she would’ve been voted down...no matter how hard she fought for the Belt. Holden was in the mindset that NO ONE was going to get the sample...at that point. He has come to his current position, because he has been backed into it by the circumstances that have occurred beyond his control. Even though it hurts, Naomi did what she thought was right. She will have to live with the consequences (however hard they may be). At least Holden and Naomi are talking, again. About Alex and his kid. Yes, it was a touching scene. To hear your child forgive you for something (anything) melts a parent’s heart. Alex hasn’t been a good husband or father (for that matter), but children don’t always harp on that. They love whom they love (facts be damned). I look forward to your next reaction to The Expanse. This season is AMAZING. Have a great day.

I kind of wish Captain Kirino's full line about the nature of war had made it into the KZbin version. It is the titled Triple Point, after all. (Well, at least the Patreon crowd gets the whole thing. Sigh. One day....) "Are you insane?" Apparently, yes, Gus, otherwise he'd have ordered your sidearm taken away. (I guess they didn't do a lot of mutiny scenarios on the simulator. ) I was kind of expecting the fire-control officer to ask for the "fire on our own ships" order in writing. She'd still have ended up in the brig, but.... I guess it's a difference that makes no difference. But damn! Can we get a "Huzzah!" for Captain Sandrine Kirino, who led the MCRN to victory in the Io engagement by simply being the adult in the room? She can have Jim Kirk's job, as far as I'm concerned.

You did notice that Amos was not happy about the guy he sees Prax becoming. Wes Chatham actually had sessions with a psychologist to help learn the best way to present a character that had been through what Amos had experienced as a child. Alex would always have loved Mars, but the message from his son has raised the stakes for Mars in his heart even more. Given the intensely Sparta-like indoctrination Martians get all their lives, it's not unthinkable that Alex's son would interpret Alex's actions as patriotic rather than a personal betrayal.

Regarding killing off sympathetic characters I think The Expanse feels far more real than GoT. A Song of Ice and Fire makes a lot of hay by bucking the cliches of Fantasy literature and as a result killing off likeable characters becomes a stylistic tic and starts to feel very contrived after a while. In The Expanse it is far less predictable in that regard. Similarly it allows characters and groups to be moved by idealism and for that to actually be an effective force in politics rather than machiavellian scheming being the only functional strategy at play. The Expanse just has a far more convincing intellectual world than GoT IMO. In a real medieval setting religion would have a far more important role and moral force, for both good and ill, where in GoT it is just for ill.
@karsu

I seem to think so too. The two authors are great friends with Grhhhhhh Martin... And even dedicated some of the book to him. But yes they learned from ASOIAF's mistakes. Dont buck expectation for that sake. Do it for the sake of the story.

@sirperybLakeney
@sirperybLakeney 4 жыл бұрын
@Kent Goertzen True enough, but that's very simplistic and ASoIaF never had or even tried to create a convincing moral framework in which intellectyal currents and idealism could thrive and meaningfully move people (and which religion would be the natural framework for in the setting). It was more focused on showing religion as ranting superstition, empty platitudes, or ancient magic. As a result those things are absent from it. Now that may well be intentional and fits the purpose of exploding Fantasy cliches - but they are still absent.

One of the best things about this show and the books (and something the writers specifically mention was at the forefront of their minds and intentions while writing the plots and developing the character arcs) is how there isn’t a black and white, obvious line drawn between good guys and bad guys... it isn’t like the Earth are the good guys and Mars are the bad guys... there are good and bad within all three factions, and even the actual characters who are obviously the “bad guys”, they still have motivations that are understandable... they aren’t just villains, being evil just for evil’s sake or from hatred or to cause chaos or whatever. They all are trying to do what is best for “their side” even if they are morally bankrupt and doing things that are wrong from our third-person overview of the situation. Even Mao’s motivation isn’t purely getting rich... his real motivation is the biggest discovery of humanity, extraterrestrial technology, and trying to understand it. He just has no ethics whatsoever. Even Errinwright and Nguyen are doing terrible things but they are doing them in the interests of their planets and because they are trying to protect their home in what they see as a unavoidable, and inevitable coming war... they are trying to make certain to ensure their victory of their side. Hell... even the protomolecule... its not just killing just to kill... I’m not going to spoil the actual purpose of the protomolecule, but suffice it to say that it’s no just an evil alien death molecule out to kill everyone and everything... it DOES have an objective... it just has a completely alien source that may not have the same kind of ideas of ethics that our species has developed... not to mention, it isn’t exactly conscious in the way we are individually conscious... it has an objective and a ceaseless drive to complete that objective... and if a few hundred thousand alien creatures get in its way, well... then they get paved over in the process... we’re just the equivalency of an anthill in the way of a construction project... the builders don’t think twice, let alone even notice that they are destroying an ant colony in the process of finishing their goal. I REALLY love how they use this ambiguous, and very gray sort of display of motives and right and wrong in this series, and is honestly brilliant in part of the original authors of the books... the fact that you can understand and even at times sympathize or empathize with some of the “bad guys” in this series make it truly unique and singular among its peers. I’m SO SO SO excited for book 9, the finale of this whole series and the culmination of the 3-part story arc that has been building across books 7, 8, and 9, that is slated to come out sometime this year!!! SOOOO STOKED!!! And obviously, I HIGHLY suggest you read the books after watching the series... even though the show is possibly THE MOST closely adapted book to show or movie adaptation I have ever seen, it’s still well well worth reading even though you know in general how it turns out and the main beats of the plot. ESPECIALLY with book 3, which is WAAAY more detailed in the book version, because I think they decided to rush it a bit on the show side in order to finish up book 3 to coincide with the ending of season 3, because I think they knew that there was a good chance that they would end up being cancelled and they wanted to finish up the story instead of ending season 3 in the middle of the story in an incredibly unsatisfying way for the viewers.

Loved your silence in the end. The Expanse straight ups the tension each episode. Favorite Season is Season 3. Season 4 was awesome as well. The Expanse the best hard Science fiction show of all time. Plus scientist are thrown in both a good and bad light. Portrayed just as humans. Good and bad apples. ASOIAF writing. But even better. :) Plus you know the showrunners will never betray us. Because the showrunners are the writers of the book. Not like in GOT run by Dumb and Dumber.

The Pinas Contorte name change was to remain hidden/not be tracked. Remember that they fired on a UN warship, to save Bobby and Avasarala, so as soon as they did the Pinas was no longer a viable ship designation as it would have been flagged for destruction by the UN. Also since the Roci is now in the middle of an engagement, between MCRN and the UN, they wanted to ensure both sides knew who they were. Thus another reason for the name reversion once they sent the MCRN crew, that they rescued, back to the MCRN fleet. The MCRN vs UN space war started as soon as the UN destroyed the MCRN first strike weapons. Its been going on for quite a while now. Human bodies, that are underage, not well trained, and lacking mental discipline do not join the MCRN. Think of the MCRN as having the best military in the system. The ONLY thing they lack is the number of ships....and that's due to resources. Its one of the main reasons they hold control over so many areas of the belt. In the book you get a much better feeling of this war......as the cold war had raged for over 100 years.....this current war was almost unavoidable.

"Are they distributing them all over the system?" If you're Admiral Nguyen and you've got the launch codes for the hybrid pods, where do you think he's sending them, given that he's not that big a fan of a certain place? Also, Alex's son, he was just in a Vac-Suit. It's probably something all Martians learn at an early age and probably have to learn emergency decompression drills and whatnot because, at the end of the day, they live in a sealed environment in the same way as the Belters do.
@TheDetailsMatter
@TheDetailsMatter 4 жыл бұрын
...And they are raised with anti-UN paranoia in their ears 24/7 (or however long the Martian day and week really are). The U.N. is coming. They're coming to bomb us all out. They're going to blast all we've built into radioactive dust. In a civilization living in tunnels and domes, everyone knows how fragile the life-systems are. One ship, x number of bombs get past the MCRN and it's all over for us, so keep your emergency gear close by at all times. If they have school field trips, if they have Scouting, you can bet that those activities include exterior excursions. So it's perfectly reasonable that Alex's son might take a moment to link his suit comms to a public antenna somewhere and send a call to his dad, in a way that bypasses any lockout codes Mom may have angrily enabled on the comms in their apartment.

When the Canterbury got blown up, and the shuttle, Shedd and all was still up, but low on air, no radio, Naomi took charge like a boss, Amos on her six. Is Holden the leader, maybe now, but to Amos and Alex, Naomi was HMFIC, and shedd, but shedd's dead. Now, Naomi has I guess, bowed, aquiessed to Holden, remember how pissed all were when Holden sent the Remember the Cant message. Now no one would stop Holden from sending the same message. Holden could call the Solar System for help, he won't. Now Holden, not Naomi is who Amos follows, because he realizes Naomi thought him a simple child. And he respects Holden cause Holden would have killed him if the Martians had boarded. Ubiquiotous, Mendacious, polyglotal donkey balls. LOL something like that, Naomi hacked the safe. Since Eros, Holden is HMFIC. And with the protomolocule torpedo, wtf Naomi, snafu, I bet they'd all been ok with it, but keeping it secret, Amos is like, Naomi, I thought you were my sister? And that shit is bad, protomolecule bad bad shit, and Naomi lied and hid it. Not like Amos isn't afraid, and losing himself is his graatest fear. He is Amos, or no one.

Very serious, very heavy episode for sure. Hard moral choices makes this series much better than initially expected - I think it is ahead of many other tv series and better in handling such subjects than for example Game of Thrones. Amos really has grown as a character and now you can understand what he feels from minute gestures and expressions. Good work of the actor, story writes and producers pays off. Martian society is one of main focus points of the 4th season - possibly one of stronger points of that season so I am sure you will enjoy this part for sure. Mars was something which was missing from first 3 seasons and good they are developing it more. BTW Have you seen this oldish sf movie - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outland_(film) Story is simple, but it is not so bad, especially given it was made almost 40 years ago.

The gore in certain contexts is, such as non-violent ones like the one in the scene here is seen more as akin to showing surgery... whereas swearing and nudity actually offends ... uhhh... “certain” people... i.e. prudes, fundamental Christians, old people, etc... don’t get me wrong... I don’t agree with it at all. ESPECIALLY with swearing. They’re just FUCKING words for Christ’s sake!!!! Lol! :D but yeah... I assure you that if all that gore that was shown in this particular scene was at the other end of an explosion instead of a dissection, then standards and practices of the SyFy channel would have had a problem with it at that point.

nothing wrong with blood and gore in movies and tv shows, just like there is nothing wrong with nipples, dicks and cursing as well there is quite the difference between make believe and reality and most adults should be able to know the difference.. the fact that i like blood and gore in movies or in tv shows does not mean i think violence is the way to go in RL.. quite the contrary.... also even tho i enjoy the most gory shit in movies i am still fucking squeamish when people get hurt in RL.. every fail video here on youtube where people actually break their bones is worse then every exploding head in some hollywood movie.. also enjoying movie gore and violence does not equal being desensitized to real violence

Good for you. That doesn't change that feeling ill or uncomfortable when seeing gore, nudity or heavy awkwardness (real or not) isn't true for MANY OTHERS. Your truth does not annull ours.

@@KatSonny problem; your "truth" sounded kinda judgmental: "i can not understand how this or that is more acceptable then this or that" - "yeah i guess we are just desensitized..." .. doesn't seem like you are desensitized so why do you assume that other people have to be desensitized while in reality they simply might have an easier time to differentiate between real and fake? violence has always been part of human entertainment i guess.. from people showing up watching some criminal getting hanged or beheaded, to gladiators chopping each other into pieces, to knights jousting in tournaments, to people having a boxing match, to fake violence in movies or games.. what is worse? seeing two people actually punching the shit out of each other and calling it "sports" or watching a fake plastic body on the floor of a tv show? who is more desensitized, the person back in the day who showed up to watch a public beheading or the person who can enjoy fake movie violence, but wonders how people could show up to watch people getting executed? i know my personal line and that means: i don't watch boxing - i actually really dislike boxing - because i don't understand the appeal of watching two people hitting each other, while i couldn't care less if some actor gets eaten by a fake zombie in a movie.. the zombie might be more graphic, but when it comes to violence is it really worse then the boxing or mixed martial arts match? also to make it clear: this is not a discussion about if you have to like or dislike it. you can like or dislike whatever you want. just like my first post wasn't about annulling anything at all, but simply my 5 cents concerning a topic that came up in the video, hence i don't really understand your remark about annulling your "truth".. was never my intention nor did i state anything even close to it..

@@esi3mn4j68 ...for YOU, mate. There is no absolute standard of quality by which to measure any subjective work of art or entertainment. There is only what we each like or dislike. And the glory of the whole thing is different people can like different things. There is no accounting for taste.

Me, I really enjoyed the tension and conflict in this one and the balance of the factions. Plus this episode was a marker of changing points and character development for a lot of characters. While a few other episodes may be flashier I feel this episode is the epitome of what the Expanse represents- humanity at it's core. That's why I like it, but you are entitled to disagree c:
