A cutdown of the cool attack of the Rocinante on the spin station and the stealth ship, with coarser language edited out.
This is a fan edit only, and is a transformative remix of the original . No copyright volition intended, just sharing the love of this great show. If you like this snippet, check out the original show. All rights belong to the original producers and owners. The Expanse property is currently produced and owned by Amazon.com. This edit is from S2EP2: Doors & Corners. www.amazon.com/s?k=The+Expanse
The full scene is over 11 minutes long, and goes from about 20:40 to 32:15. The original does an excellent job building tension and showing more of the human element (ie the fear of the folks in the Fed Ex containers), which was mostly cut in this edit for the sake of brevity.
[Update at 600,000 views and about 3 years, in March 2023]
I cannot believe this video edit I did at lunch one day a has been viewed so many times! My finger hovered over delete as the video file had sat taking up space on my laptop for a couple months, but then I thought, hey I wonder if anyone on KZbin would enjoy this, so I randomly uploaded it as an experiment.
As noted in a reply to some early comments, one morning a little over 3 years ago (just before the pandemic hit) I sat in a meeting next to a senior IT executive, who took delight in demonstrating to his younger IT employees he was still 'hip' with geek culture. He saw a vinyl sticker of the Roci on my laptop and was puzzled, and asked what ship it was. I explained there was this awesome new sci-fi series and this was the protagonists' rockin' ship. To introduce him to the series, over lunchtime, I pulled three existing uploads from KZbin (thus you may notice resolution and volume differences between parts, though I tried to level them) and edited them down into this one. This IT Executive is a truly good and honest person, and he had made the personal choice to not voluntarily allow vulgar or profane language into his life. So no PG-13 or R movies for him. I totally respect this commitment, and so when I started this cut-down video, I also cut or muted out profanity.
Some comments below are insightful and sincere, and some are just baffling- but that comes with the territory. Hopefully the explanation on the genesis of this clean cut above answers the annoyed or flabbergasted comments that this clean cut even exists in the universe.
Thanks everyone for watching!

Right, there wouldn't be explosions all the time unless ship critical systems that CAN explode are hit or high explosive missiles are used. Most fights would just end with one (or both) ship(s) disabled due to damage.

I love how the Amun-Ra stealth ship is exactly that - a stealth ship. It's extremely well armed, but its stealth functionality limits its combat ability in a slugging match. While the Rocinante has full PDC coverage, the Amun-Ra's odd angular protrusions (used to deceive scanners) prevents it from having the same CQB capabilities. Basically, it's an assassin - it comes out of nowhere, hits you hard, and then leaves, if you can close the distance, it loses its primary defense (stealth).
@Karackal

Also at that distance, the Amun Ra's railgun is practically useless as the angular velocities involved are way too high for them to track anything anymore.

@GreylanderTV
@GreylanderTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTrueAdept They would only explode _if_ the hull was thick enough to stop them and they actually stopped. Then all the kinetic energy instantly converts to heat and the now melted and boiling material of projectile and hull rapidly expand. But if the hull was that thick and strong it would also contain that explosion and you would just get a little melted crater in the hull. Much like a meteor striking surface of moon. If the hull is not thick and strong enough to stop it, then a hole is punched through and both a bit of the hull and the projectile keep going, both a bit squashed/melted, but still maintaining momentum. [Edit: If thickness of hull, mass and velocity of projectile are all just right, then as it punches through, it might turn into a spray of molten metal. I noticed that when they burn into battle, the lights on the bridge turn blue. The Roci is a Martian gunboat, so it makes since that the "situation normal" lighting would be red because their sky is red. When they beat to battle stations, the lights turn blue to signal combat because it represents the color of the Earther sky, and would instill a sense of urgency in a Martian Marine.
@wrmusic8736

It's most likely not that. On submarines red lighting means stealth (everybody should keep silent, everything is rigged for silent running) and blue lighting means combat mode. White lighting means normal, traveling operation. So they just use naval light coding for space vessels.

If you accidentally push another button, you know what you hit; if you accidentally touch a different part of the screen, you usually don't know what you touched. How do I know? I love the combat of the expanse, it's either one really good and well timed shot with a rail gun, or spray and prey with PDC and missiles. The railguns are interesting, but proportionally they seem to get less use for the extra effort they take to aim and fire. This scene, the final roci combat scene from season 5,and the scene where they take out the engines of an earther ship with a single missile are my favorites

Speculation upon perceived direction of gravity within Fed Ex assault pods. "G" refers to direction of any perceived floor. 1. Attached to Guy Molinari G is in the direction of the rear side wall. Half crew should be pressed into seats, other half hanging in their straps, Drummer should've been standing on the rear wall. 2. When detached the rockets are under the pods, G becomes the floor until pod reorients, then G becomes the door end and everyone is hanging from their straps until G neutrality is achieved. 3. Pod attaches to station and door end explodes. Station spin now means other end of pod is G. Assault crew has to unstrap one by one and climb up using the seats as footholds and then climb through the breech and roll off to the side. Station spin now makes the breech position the floor, G is towards the outer hull, assault group can now operate normally.

@sargon6000
@sargon6000 3 жыл бұрын
Fred having a (non-functional) stealth ship or any technology derived from said ship would just prove to the UN that he's involved in the stealth ship program, especially since they already made him a scapegoat in this mess. So it made more sense for him to indirectly give that evidence to the UN. Though I'm pretty sure he copied the plans from the ship from the wreck's main computer core, assuming they weren't melted during the battle. I doubt Holden would just give him the plans from the Anubis from the data cores he salvaged, given his attitude towards that ship, the only other person he would have shared that data with would have been Avasarala, as evidence.
@joes5010

The political capital he would gain from using it as evidence when treating with the UN and mars would outweigh the benefit of keeping all the hardware as that could lead to major backlash. he would also only really need a few samples and a copy of the computer core to get similar results especially with the data they would be able to find on the station as i doubt an entire off the books station would be devoted to only protomolecule. in all likelihood the railgun that is fitted to the Roci was probably only possible with the data they got of amun-ra ships from that battle.

Somebody clarify me one thing,since space is a vacuum and there wouldn't be any resistance for any kind of object if a PDC bullet is fired and doesn't hit the target(I.e enemy ship) wouldn't it keep going on and on, without slowing down or stopping until it hit some other ship or some asteroid?

The chance of it actually hitting something else are beyond minuscule. We're talking something like an average sized bullet would have to travel back and forth across the entire universe a few hundred million times before it actually hit something else, because space is so big and empty.

It makes sense. The Protogen warships were technologically advanced, but they weren't designed by a military. They were designed by a corporation with no experience in building warships. Those pdcs are firing 40mm ammunition at high speed, you'd need incredible thick plating to stop one bullet, let alone a full magazine of them come flying at you. And if you'd somehow manage to put that much plating onto the hull and still keep the ship fast and maneuverable, the enemy could still crack you open like a can of tuna with the railguns that fire even bigger slugs at even higher speed from an even higher distance (and your pdcs won't cut it to stop them). That's what I love about this show. The more you think about it, the more awesome it gets.
@DarkAshenfall

@RubiiX That is not entirely true, as a kinetic round passing through the hull would create an implosion. The US military already achieves this with Sabot rounds. It punches through a tank, creates an implosion in the tank cabin, and flies out the other side. Leaving the crew a bloody mess. Its actually better to armor up and absorb the kinetic force on the outside. Modern armor already takes into account the kinetic force being dealt to a tank and in the case of personal armor. Modern armor is designed to, instead of merely resisting the hit, to actually disperse the force along the surface of the armor. Thus mitigating much, if not all of the force. While a person still feels the hit, the important part is stopping the penetration and enough force to prevent internal bleeding. The same concept would apply to a tank or a ship. Plus a tank and a ship would not be relying solely upon the armor, but also the structure of the ship. It would be designed to absorb/disperse the force of a hit. On top of what the armor is already doing. This is of course not going to save a ship getting pummeled. The military understands this. Armor is meant more to prevent single hits from causing catastrophic damage and provide longevity. Essentially in the hopes a tank/ship can last long enough to either kill the enemy or retreat. None of this also takes into account a futuristic variant of Reactive or Ablative Armor.
@errolwhitaker596
@errolwhitaker596 3 жыл бұрын
@@DarkAshenfall yes, the sabot round uses and implosion to liquefy the enemy, however, if you notice they are in pressure suits because they depressurized their cabin to avoid such a fate. In that case, a sabot round, railgun round, and non explosive round will punch through and cause minimal damage unless it hits something vital. You would want less armor to maintain maneuverability and reduce spalling and strain on the hull from the round impacts.
