Also, Mr. Holland is already here, I am here and I'm sure Mr. Darling will show up very soon, too. This has everything a good reaction to this show needs. I'll leave a sub and look forward to this.

To chime in on the "realistic" part: The Expanse is (with a specific exception that will get revealed by the Story, with the characters even commenting on it), the most hard sci fi / most realistic show that isn't in some way connected to / meant as a documentary.

Been enjoying your Lower Decks reactions and love that you’re starting on The Expanse journey!! Very welcoming fan base who is great at giving good information without (usually) too many spoilers. Don’t worry about being confused (your supposed to be) All the questions will be answered!…. And then replaced with a whole bunch of new ones! The flip maneuver to slow down- Accelerating towards your destination simulates gravity- 1/2 way there you flip over and decelerate the rest of the way. If the engines aren’t producing thrust you’re back to 0 gravity. Space / physics are treated very realistically - & yep, The bird on Ceres flys weird because it has lower gravity Enjoy the ride!! 🚀

Great reaction! This is my favorite show ever, period! As you you saw this show dumps you in the deep end immediately! This first season is a mystery! In this very possible near future, there is no artificial gravity! No shields, no phasers, no space breaks! The flip and burn maneuver, when traveling through space under thrust most ships maintain 1/3 gravity. The ships are also built like skyscrapers with the engines on bottom. So when using the flip and burn the main engines are turned off the using thrusters to flip the direction of the ship and reignite the main engines slowing the ship. This causes emense gravity on the body so the tubes of drugs are used to help the body deal with that! I think your doing just fine. If you happen to miss anything major the Expanse fandom will keep you on track. Amazing fan base that typically doesn't spoil! Welcome to The Expanse! Subscribed for The Expanse! One consequence of not spoonfeeding your audience is that you can lose a big chuck of that audience that really needs a bib and a mommy to absorb what is ongoing. The Expanse is a rare thing, a TV series aimed at the far right of the intelligence bell curve, and the writers paid the price for choosing that target. The show never had a large audience. On the other hand, people with the attention span and the smarts to enjoy being challenged by a TV show rave about The Expanse. Many, like myself, think it is the G.O.A.T, any era, any genre. Prepare to be supremely entertained. You will laugh, you will cry, you will scream at your TV, and you will be amazed, not just by gimmickry, but by empathy for some of the most wonderfully drawn and incredibly human characters you will ever get to know and love (or know and hate, if they deserve such scorn). Many times it will be a bit hard to figure out who deserves what, just like it is hard in real life to make such judgments when people are simply people and never even close to being all good or all bad.

Aimed at an intelligent, engaged audience for sure, but I know the authors of the books and show would object to you invoking "the bell curve", since The Expanse emphatically goes against its conclusions that intelligence and aptitude is based on class, race, and genetics. The Expanse is all about showing how discrimination and bias skews people's views of each other, the opposite of what The Bell Curve argues.
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 7 ай бұрын
@@dapeach06 Please accept that it was you, and not me, who added "discrimination" to this thread. The bell curve is handy shorthand for describing reality. "Cancelling" it out of a warped idea that it carries with it white supremecy connotations is insane. Any class, any race, any ethnicity, and either sex, can have individuala who inhabit the far right of the bell curve. It is you, not me, who apparently think that white males own that position.
@dapeach06
@dapeach06 7 ай бұрын
@@Yesquire0 the whole idea of an intelligence bell curve is simplistic and flawed, and the way intelligence is measured in most cases WAS designed by white supremacists, and the person who wrote "The Bell Curve" is one as well. Invoking an intelligence bell curve is pretentious faux-intellectualism, and the original people who made it a popular concept were trying to justify their racism using it.
@dapeach06

The expanse is very big into not letting you know more about what's going on, then the people involved know. If that person doesn't know what's going on, then you likely will not either. You will spend a LOT of time being confused about what's going on, till the people in the show start figuring things out. Don't worry too much about missing stuff. EVERYTHING is relevant, including the hard to read text on displays that you will never see while watching the show. If you ever go back and rewatch the show from the beginning after you finish. You will be shocked how many small details and dialog lines even in this first episode, is not paid off till the final seasons. It's an amazing ride. Every time you get more information and figure things out, there will be new mysteries that are then revealed.

That line you said you're going to remember " We came so far out into the darkness, why couldn't we have brought more light?" Hmmmm One thing you come to appreciate about this show is just how amazing it is from top to bottom! The writing, directing, special effects, music score, and acting! Try to remember there are no wasted lines or scenes in this show! Information can be attained from news feed in the background, on a hand held device and so on. Wow. You picked up on stuff quickly. The first half of Season 1 is a heavy lift. It establishes the rules of the universe (much more "hard science" than usual, although not completely realistic, plus an ugly political environment); introduces a huge cast (and then kills a bunch of them); and sets up a "noir" detective mystery. Additionally, it's written such that the viewers only learn things as the characters do, and that includes things about the *other characters* . It's a lot, and some people struggle, even though everything does become clear eventually. You look like you'll do fine, though, and the notes will help. So, welcome to "The Expanse." It's awesome for a lot of reasons, and not least because it's a master class in how to write cliff-hangers. 😁 Also, your question about the colonization of Mars has a fun answer. The two authors of the series upon which this show is based (Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) have become good friends with Andy Weir, the guy who wrote "The Martian" -- which became the film that starred Matt Damon, directed by Ridley Scott. "The Expanse" and "The Martian" both have solid foundations in real science (although "The Expanse" takes a few more liberties than "The Martian" did...), and the three men all admired the work done by the others -- so much so, that Weir has an informal agreement with Abraham and Franck that the events of "The Martian" are part of the canon of "The Expanse." So, to answer your question, in "The Expanse" Mars was colonized by NASA botanist Mark Watney. 😁

Welcome to wild ride called The Expanse. Seems like you are right guy to react to it. Dulcinea is indeed here as reference to Don Quixote (or Don Quijote in original). I'm just not sure is that how to pronounce it - but doesn't matter for the series too much. And let's just say without going to spoilers: watch for more of those. Good that you caught it as a "muse". Most people don't. Think about it few episodes later (or about the end of this season). Just fun fact: Shohreh Aghdashloo (actress that plays Avasarala - that women on Earth) was in Star Trek too. I think in 3rd Kelvin movie (Beyond). Commodore or something like this. I think her character was added in reshoots.

The Expanse has probably the most realistic space actions presented on screen in all of Sci-Fi. New Expanse reactor gets new sub. Just a small response to something you commented on never clarified in the show. The guns they are using on shipboard use basically mini-missile style contact explosive rounds. They have very little penetrating power to prevent hull breaches. Nice job. It’s complex world building, but it all comes together soon. This is one of the top three or so space sci fi shows, IMO, and probably the most realistic about what the geopolitics could look like in a couple hundred years. The science realism appeals to a lot of people, but the geopolitics is what hooked me in. Btw, it’s pretty close to the books because the authors were involved in the show too. I highly recommend the books if you love the show. The books are great.

One of the great elements of "realistic" storytelling in this series: there are no heroes... and even the villains have motives that you can understand, perhaps even agree with. All the people - those that you cheer for, that you want to like and support - have their flaws. They are not perfect. They are just humans, doing what they think they need to do. Or want to do. Another great example of this set of protagonists; a series that I can only recommend to the highest degree - is the German Netflix production "Dark". Definitly worth a look, and always a worthy endeavour for reactions. But for now... let's enjoy "The Expanse".

Belter creole is a fun language, a mishmash of at least 15 Earth languages. The suffix "-lowda" refers to people, so "beltalowda" means the Belter people and "inyalowda" means Inner people (people from Earth and Mars). "Sasa" means to know a fact (knowing a person is "keng"), and "ke" indicates a question (like the Japanese "ka"), so "sasa ke" means "Do you know?" or maybe "Do you understand?" to which you'd reply "Mi sasa", I understand, or maybe "Ya, mi sasa" if you're a petulant kid saying "Yeah, I got it."

I haven't gone through all the Belter creole pages on The Expanse Wiki, but what I have seen just lists the name and etymology. @@WarpReactor It's not really explained in the show, so this is not much of a spoiler: Stealth in The Expanse is just a hull constructed in a way to not reflect radar and lidar scans. Additionally, the ships have the ability to actively cool their hull down to almost the space's background temperature (close to 0 degrees Kelvin) by somehow storing all waste heat internally. So they won't show up on any mid or long range scans. But if you were beside that ship, you would absolutels see it. Obviously, this only works when the ship has its drive off and is just floating, with every not needed system turned off. As soon as the ship starts it's drive, there is no stealth anymore, every ship's drive plume can be seen from everywhere in the Solar System.

What's your release schedule for this show? One or two a week, something like that? I need more! Can't wait to see you go through this series. Its a series that rewards people who pay attention to fine details and I think your style fits that very very well. Little recommendation - for the first few videos I recommend a line about not leaving spoilers in comments, even stuff like "you'll LOVE this character in the future" can be spoilery. Expanse fandom is excited and loves the show, but I've seen some commenters get a little too overzealous with edging the spoiler line in react video comments.
@tomaszmankowski9103
@tomaszmankowski9103 8 ай бұрын
Hi! I have to admit you are starting really well with the series - the comments are insightful and you are asking right questions (not all of them obviously), so I've subscribed to help the channel in some way. I think you will will enjoy the fact that the series rewards attention to detail from a viewer, there is a lot of information conveyed by visuals, small pieces of dialogue, single sentences, sometimes from 3-4th row characters you will never see again, or quite opposite who will return and play an important part. There is a lot of world building in initial episodes and the entire first season. The world building never stops, even in the sixth season, so there is always something new and interesting. I think you can wait for the 4th episode with real praises of the show - it is one of the actual great episodes of the show, the first one of many to come. Season 3 is sometimes considered the best, but personally I believe season 5 is the one where the series reaches the highest levels in telling the story, in action, in showing how space works and dealing with really serious questions and hard subjects. The characters of the show are a massive, great quality of the series - many do not survive, but writing manages to create new characters we learn to understand, love or hate or just respect in time of few minutes on the screen, which is quite an achievement, just like are character arcs, which are mature, well written and realistic - sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking. I am sure you will enjoy this journey. I've seen the entire show 6 times and even during the 6th watching there are new things I've noticed, which is sometimes incredible, because tiny details can have consequences literally seasons later. Cheers!

Once upon a time, Game of Thrones and Battlestar Galactica had a secret love child, and they named it The Expanse. The Expanse was originally conceived as a MMP RPG, but after doing immense and impeccable research the co-authors, Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham realized that was beyond their reach, so they created it as a tabletop RPG. After playing a while with friends, including George R.R. Martin, (Ty Frank was his assistant), they were encouraged by Martin to turn the story they had started into a novel. It turned out to be 9 novels, 7 novellas, and 2 short stories. The books were so popular the first 6 were adapted to screen. The TV show was so popular it was made into a Tabletop RPG by Telltale Games, bringing The Expanse full circle, back to its original concept. P.S. The co-authors, Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham, also headed up the TV writing team, ergo the solid consistency with the novels.

Really good reaction. The Expanse is by far my favourite Sci-Fi show. Enjoy the ride, it keeps building up! I will join you on your journey! :-) Just for explanation, all ships are build like tall buildings, so they have gravity by acceleration, half way they flip and fly backwards :-) to keep gravity, if there is something you have to react to, like the scopuli, you have a high-g burn, to actually change direction. The "Juice" is to prevent the crew from getting a stroke.

My favorite backstory behind the books is how the characters started off as a role playing game characters, with the authors and friends playing the characters that were on the shuttle. The changed it from an RPG game to books and expanded the story from there, with their game play storyline being a big influence on the first book's plot.

Welcome to The Expanse, the best show ever on TV. As others have said, it doesn't spoon-feed it's viewers, I will only add that EVERY line of dialog is important - if you miss something a character says, you've missed an important detail. Also worth noting: episode 4 is the one that seems to get most people hooked on the series. From that point on, things really ramp up. Regarding the writers, they knew they had a full season of 10 episodes when they started writing. The authors of the nine novels were among the producers of the series and sat in the writers room. Also, the first book continues into the second season, and ends with S2.E5

Wow, the third new Expanse reactor I discovered in just a few days. Great timing, now that Ramblers inc and The Review Crew just finished the series, and Anna Alexander is near to the end as well. Was already worried where to get my Expanse fix. Looks like you're picking up things quite good and are pretty attentive, which is required for this show. There is no wasted line of dialogue, and the moment you look away you will miss some details. There is information hidden in the background, on handhelds or other screens, or in background talks. I would still recommend to turn subtitles on. They wont spoil much, but especially in season 1 there was some audio issues. Subs will help with that.

There are 146 comments now and there is the patreon channel, so someone probably already wrote the following which is explained more in the books. In The Expanse, there isn't magical gravity like in most sci-fi shows. Gravity is produced by constant acceleration of thrust (i.e. G-Forces.) That is why Holden and girlfriend were floating above the bed when the thrusters were off. Then, the thrusters came on, and they fell down. As long as the ships are going a little bit faster each second, there will be g-forces and gravity. This is real physics. Probably the only thing magical is that is that it would take a lot of power to keep a ship moving faster every second for a prolong time. That isn't possible in the present. In The Expanse, a ship traveling from Saturn to Ceres would keep the thrusters on with the front of the ship heading to Ceres. When it gets half way to Ceres, the ship turns off the thrusters, flip around, and start the thrusters again, thereby incrementally slowing the ship down while producing g-forces in the opposite direction. You will hear the characters saying they will do a "flip and burn." When a ship has to slow down or speed up very very quickly, the "juice" is to keep the arteries and veins open because the sudden high g-forces can cause strokes. Finally, think of the ships as buildings with multiple floors that is traveling sideways from our POV ( in space, there is no up and down.)

I normally don't go for one-person reactions, but you nail everything I want in this kind of video. You try very hard to pay attention and understand that some information will be left out ON PURPOSE. I absolutely adore how you willingly admit that you're not willing to make certain opinions. I think that we've been ruined by a combination of pandering and crime fiction theory and its relation to spoiler culture. We aren't always supposed to be able to guess. We're supposed to have thoughts, and to follow along, and to enjoy the journey, and to either be surprised to vindicated with the results as secondary to the journey.

Love your reaction. I do make a habit of introducing newcomers to the use of thrust gravity by most ships. It's one of those things that is not really explained but is more enjoyable to understand early (no spoilers!). Essentially, most* ships are built like towers with floors running along the width of the vessel with the engine (drive) below you. The Equivalence Principle suggests that the effects of both gravity and acceleration are indistinguishable from each other so thrust is used to push the floor into your feet (like in a fast elevator). Typically, ships accelerate at 1/3 Earth gravity, which is sufficient for creating a gravity-like force while minimising physiological stress on the body. Once a ship gets halfway to its destination, they 'flip and burn'. This means turning off the drive, spinning 180 degrees and then restarting the drive to continuously decelerate for the second half of the journey, ensuring thrust gravity is maintained. This means sometimes ships appear to travel backward during deceleration, with engines facing the direction of travel. When the drives are off, and thrust is lost, so too gravity and this will result in periods of weightlessness. In these situations, magnetic 'mag' boots are used to keep feet on the floor. If you read all this then bravo and thanks. Looking forward to accompanying you on the odyssey that lies ahead! :)
