They all knew Alex was Martian. He speaks with the Martian "southern drawl" because the Mariner Valley on Mars was originally settled by Texans, so the accent stuck through generations. They didn't know he was ex-Navy because he didn't have to disclose that. Everyone on the Canterbury was there for a reason, running from one part of their lives or another. You don't sign on long haul freight runs to make friends and share stories.

In Leviathan Wakes, Corey writes that it's a mixture of Chinese and Pakistani immigrants with a smattering of Texans, but the drawl quickly caught on and became the default accent (in the Mariner Valley).

Miller never knew Julie before he was assigned to find her. She was extremely wealthy socialite from Earth and he's a belter dirty cop who grew up on Ceres.

Yes, for a short time you can open your helmet like that. :) The potential issues are: (1) pressure change - this is a real problem. You actually have to breathe out before opening your helmet, otherwise your lungs will puncture. (2) lack of oxygen - for 10 or 15 seconds, not an issue, but you cannot hold your breath due to (1), so it's basically the oxygen already in your blood that you get. (3) radiation (mostly from the sun) - not an issue in the very short term, but after a minute or so, it will give you a bad sunburn, and it gets lethal not long after. (4) cold - not that much of an issue, suprprisingly. Space is cold, but your face isn't actually touching anything, so you only lose heat by radiation, which is a fairly slow process. I think you could go hours in space without permanent damage due to heat loss.

Loving the new format. The interaction between you guys makes for a great reaction. You guys are doing a great job keeping up with the plot so far. The first plot arc has a lot of mystery/detective noir elements and you're not supposed to know all of it yet. As a fan of Lost you will recognize some actors in future episodes.

Navoo is the Morman ship. Tycho is the station under control of Fred Johnson. Tycho's main work was spinning up asteroids so they'd have gravity and be inhabitable.

They're not going to the Scopuli. The Scopuli was completely destroyed by the debris field when the Canterbury exploded. Scopuli is a debris field now too.

Dawes is Jared Harris, a very well known English thespian/actor. His father Richard Harris was also very famous in the UK and played many roles, including Dumbledore in Harry Potter.

Dawes' story was all about the "cold equations" that Belters are forced to live with. They're always at the edge of survival, never able to take the next breath for granted. Working with a tight budget, look at "Jaws." The directing and cinematography outside of the shark effect is a full course in moviemaking on a budget. The corporate spy who was putting an eye camera on Naomi and Holden...you did see him earlier. He had been one of Fred Johnson's technicians working on the Roci. Naomi gave him a hard look as he brushed past her. A big difference between Lost and The Expanse is that the early clues will matter. They may not matter by the end of this episode, or even this season, but they will matter. Keep in mind that the show is tracking books, and even the storylines of a book will extend through all its chapters. A Chekov's Gun displayed in chapter one will be used by the last chapter.

Jared Haris (Dawes) is Sir Richard Harris' son. Sir Richard Harris is a very accomplished actor himself. Jared Harris is one of the leads in the award winning miniseries "Chernobyl"

Pretty much like Game of thrones. If you don't want to be lost, you have to remember the names, the places, the alliances and the opposing forces involved (and keep in mind those things could change quickly)

Oh, man. Just watched the series finale and they nailed it. So, after this, you only have 56 and you're there. Anyway, yes, the details are all important but I wouldn't worry about not remembering everything the first time around. It's a show that rewards subsequent viewings with little epiphanies and foreshadowing that you might miss the first time. Lots of Don Quixote references in the show. Rocinante, Dulcinea, and more to come...

Fred had hustled the Mormons off the Nauvoo because it is an interstellar generation ship. Thus it has unusual astronomy-grade instruments of enough power and precision that he had periodically been using them to keep tabs on what was happenning way out where the Donnager was. That's why he was able to tightbeam a message to the Tachi/Rocinante (renamed for Don Quixote's horse - there are multiple explicit references like this to "The Man of La Mancha" in season one). Nobody else had any idea the Roci was even out there, since everyone else who did is now dead.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but Tycho Station (Fred Johnson's station) is likely named after Tycho Brahe, a prominent Danish astronomer. There is a planetarium in Copenhagen named after him.

Yes, Amos has a "heavy" background and you eventually learn more on it later (but not the full picture). The show is clever enough to just give us just the infos we need to know about the characters

Well, the MCRN Donnager is not the biggest but it *is* a dreadnought, i.e. an advanced battleship (in historical terms an all-big-guns early 20th century warship, *not* to be confused with a battlecruiser [which is glass cannon but looks almost the same] as sci-fi always does...), the MCRN has I think nine of them total because they are powerful and horribly expensive. *Rocinante* is Don Quixote's horse, fits in with Holden's quixotic personality. The people do have interesting names but mostly in extended contexts and materials, nothing crucial, like many having classical Latin names (Josephus Miller, Octavia Muss, Frederic Lucius Johnson...) but using the shortened version, Fred especially has a telling middle name, "the enlightened one" . Again, nothing's obligatory😉. Oh and games, the movers of course play *the Great Game* but that's a geeky historical reference^^. Phoebe is an ice moon of Saturn.😉 Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

In a way Josephus Miller and Amos Burton are two sides of the same coin. Both grew up in conditions of poverty and abuse, with only the details differing... but those details and their life decisions took each a different way. They are both deeply wounded individuals, each doing their best to do "right" in their own ways.

The kid that was left out in space is not a new character (but was easily forgettable in his first intro). He's the one who was selling the illegal water and who Miller's character let go. And yes! Having a lower budget DOES force you to get creative. Lol. Also, as you probably figured out already, the Roci crew *is not* going to the Scopuli. The Scopuli was destroyed.

I will say as far as remembering everything names and ships and so on. It's helpful yes. Necessary... No. it helps you keep the story straight and in the first season because it's kind of a whole mystery story it helps keep you from trying to play catch up. But you have us and your chat! So you won't be lost if you forget a name here or there

Believe it or not, Babylon 5's Starfury space fighter FAR predated the"realistic effects" of vector thrust in zero-G. The Babylon stations themselves used centripetal force by spinning, with Gs ranging from 1/3 to 1 full G, depending on distance out from the zero-G core, which was used for safe docking.
