M.R. James may have done away, largely, with certain Gothic elements but Canon Alberic's Scrapbook and even The Tractate Middoth certainly have ruined monasteries and eccliastical shivers! The Experiment is a story I haven't previously come across, so thank you for this!
@blixten29283 жыл бұрын
This I've always found is one of the most suggestive, enigmatic of James stories. "Why didn't you cover his face?" again and again (if I remember correctly). Half-remembered fragments, lost laments, shadowy, partially sketched figures: I love it for that reason. A great choice!!

@@ClassicGhost Very good! You did a couple of different English accents In that if I remember correctly! I am fascinated by accents, Even though I’ve only been living here since I was 15 almost 16! I do all of the accents really well... so I’m told, i’m still working on the Scottish one, very strong Scottish accent, but they have lots of different Scottish accents, I think it’s because I used to play the piano and I had perfect pitch because I started when I was three and finished it (unlike my brothers who hated it and quit, I took to it like a duck to water) and then I did teaching for the Royal Academy, Just children, I thought if I heard Mary had a little lamb one more time I would end up in prison for walking the kids over the back of the head with a wok!!! Joke joke joke!! I always thought it was strange that the Royal Academy was in Ireland because it was the only English thing we had in the Republic! Irish people are over patriotic if you ask me. Apparently it’s completely different now! They embrace everything British compared to when I was growing up there! Sorry I keep jumping off topic! Anyway I ended up paying for tips for rich American tourists in the posh hotels, Then I met somebody who invited me to his room after a few drinks (at that age I couldn’t hold my drink) and I had some cocaine for the first time, eventually it led to me going to All the best hotels in London but for a very different purpose and usually £500 an hour if you get my meaning! It was motivated by cocaine addiction but eventually I went to rehab, this was after my new death experience which was a cocaine and heroin overdose! Addictions tend to grow, They gather momentum. My dad was an alcoholic so was everybody on his side of the family addicted to something or other! My aunt was a reporter for Irish television and she used to pop pills and drink for Dutch courage and she was a workaholic just like my dad! He stopped drinking and sent me to therapy, along with my mum and brothers which is how I discovered spirituality and self-help books! So I balance it with these channels because the paranormal interests me and when you look at a lot of spiritual stuff you need a bit of the Darkside, I’m a Libra I need balance! By the way I Advertised your channel on an American channel like this! The only reason I’m on it is because they have a long book by a British author it’s about 10 hours long of short stories I think, no it’s a series! You will never read this, it’s too long! Yes I told them that you do Victorian ghost stories and British folk horror, so many people asked me for the link! One man said the only thing he knew that was British was the wicker man! I also told them about the other two channels that I watch, one of them is classic bite-size and the other is encrypted horror, In my opinion these are the best story telling channels in the entire world wide web! They are enough to satisfy me, except for my interest in Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers! Honestly! Have a fabulous week and good luck in all you do! I’m looking forward to reading a story that you’ve actually written, you tend to make modern stories interesting again! Once more apologies about the length of the message! Once I start ✍️🤦🏼♀️ take care of yourself Tony! 🕊💛🌟✨👑✨🌟💛🕊

With all due respect and gratitude to Tony for his excellent work, if you are looking for more M.R. James stories read very well, those recorded by the late, lamented Michael Hordern are second to none, although incomplete. There are also complete recordings of all James' works by David Collings which are excellent. Both can be found easily online.
I'm so glad you did this one. All channels always record the same ones, and this, which I think is one of the best, is always overlooked. Thank you. 😊

Hi Tony, those bells, were a tad overbelling! Sorry! Couldn't resist. I really enjoyed your change of pitch for the various characters, really added atmosphere- to distinguish classes- M.R.James isn't "jump scene" type of ghost story author, at least not to mind- how would you classify him. I always feel he was STERN. And I need to listen again, daytime, NO HEADPHONES! Been advised to go for walks to better ingest my probiotic capsule, supposed to be good for depression...Namaste. Zizi Jeanmaire! (promised self not to write anything, anymore- and no, I haven't bought James Merrill yet- 3 books sitting on simmer, waiting for lottery win! Wish I was smart enough to tutor kids in English, etc.)
