Technically it wasn't a viking settlement because it had been set up by Farmers not Raiders (vikings). Also it quite likely most of them had partly or fully converted to Christianity.
@sandyhenderson441
@sandyhenderson441 Жыл бұрын
@@dragoninthewest1 Actually the vikings were farmers/settlers. Their boats certainly went raiding, but one reason for leaving their original homes was the need for land that could be farmed. They settled & farmed Scottish Islands, and here in the north of England the vikings are still very present. All around where I'm living are towns & villages with viking settlement names. And the bit of France now called Normandy was given to viking raiders, on condition that they didn't raid anywhere else in France. Seafaring farmers more than raiders.
@PatrickDoherty-m7k
@PatrickDoherty-m7k Жыл бұрын
@@sandyhenderson441 Yup, even though some people were pretty much just raiders the majority wasnt, they had raiding season and then the rest of the year was spent either farming or merchant stuff like travelling and selling goods/loot, alot of the people who lead raids n partook in them had farms back home that their families tended to, the ones that did own arable land that is, raiding was just an extra often more lucrative job that alot of them took on during the raiding season and also a way of scoping out new lands to like you said, farm.

This era was the first time that mankind had enveloped the entire globe. 🇮🇸 Icelanders🇮🇸 first set eyes on the 🇨🇦Beothuk🇨🇦 people and the world became smaller and smaller. Our woes with the novel corona virus demonstrate just how small the world is, in 2020.

@@MatheusRodriguesCosta Well, here in Spain, the country that would benefit the most from it, even bad history teachers at the very least mention vikings made it there before Colombus. Edit: No offense meant. It just kinda surprises me that people who actually live on that continent were never taught about it. If any country was going try and forget about Lief & Thorfinn I would've assumed it would've been us spaniards xD

We have no way of knowing who 'the first European to step foot on the Americas' was. To say we do would effectively close the book on any new exploration and discoveries. "Authorities" and "experts" are notorious for omitting these words: "As far as we know ... *so far* ....".

you're wrong about VINLAND meaning land of wine. there's no such word in Norse for wine or vines, mainly because they drank ale or meade. it actually means grassland & that was important because their ships carried up to 16 cattle. so you need to correct that

Vinland is Old Norse, which branched from Germanic (Scandinavian) which is a mix of Faroese, Latin and greek. The Norse language is basically historical record of people displaced by war and slavery for over 10,000 .

It's interesting how names are translated. Christopher Columbus for example was really named Cristoból Colón. Almost every historical name we use is actually 100% inaccurate because it's been translated. His actual, untranslated name was Þorfinnr Karlsefni.
