Desert mistletoe has edible fruit; when growing on mesquite, ironwood, and catclaw acacia. Phoradendron californicum. Obviously from it’s Latin name, it’s native to the deserts of California, Nevada, Arizona, and the deserts of northwestern Mexico; i.e. the Sonoran desert.

That's so interesting, especially when we think about things that are so common in our daily life and traditions! Our crew recently recorded a project that aims to fight a virus that is affecting a basic part of our eating habits. A banana pandemic is going on, a virus that's basically killing the banana that many are used to consuming throughout Europe and North America. We're curious to see what's going to be the outcome of this project and what type of banana we will be consuming in the future.
@michaelcross4112
@michaelcross4112 Жыл бұрын
It's a fungus called Panama disease, similar to potato blight. We have multiple varieties of potato in common use but only one variety of banana appears on store shelves. Promoting a more resistant alternative cultivar is what should be done. It's practically impossible to get rid of either fungus so getting disease resistant cultivars has been the only viable option unless you want to grow it in a green house which might protect it from the fungus an ideal location for this would be an area subject to urban decay and deindustrialization as agricultural areas have more crop diseases.

Lystrosaurus: supposedly this dicynodont survived the Great Dying and was extremely common in Triassic fossil beds. Were they really that common in Pangaea, or were they just really bad at decomposing? Christmas does use an odd array of toxic plants, but during winter, you can't be too picky regarding your foliage. Frozen cabbages make more sense, but aren't as showy.

It's common for a lot of poisonous species evolve along side either a pollinator or seed spreader, and the second species develops resistances to the poisons. And it's only SOME species. Don't feed this to your parakeets or chickens. It'll definitely kill them.

I think my favorite portrayal of Mistletoe in Media is in one of the Mickey Mouse Christmas specials where Minnies' sleazebag boss tries to get a kiss from her, only for Pete to come in and take the kiss instead. He may also be a sleazebag, but Pete's not gonna let a woman be the target of harassments.

We grow chestnuts on our little farm. Went to visit the in laws and saw mistletoe growing wild and the urge to take some material and bring it home was there, but I think it would actually end up being a problem more than a novelty in the orchards. Thanks for the info. Fascinating that it contains chemicals of the host plant. While it may seem to make common sense, it's not a simple thing. Let's say they find a use for high blood pressure. Then, the question becomes on which host tree do you cultivate your mistletoe to get the added benefit of some second substance, or a clean form from a host tree that has nothing to add when tested.

Kissing under the mistletoe is a late 18th / early 19th century English custom - a development from the 'kissing bough' which was a wooden hooped frame covered in evergreens, ribbons and fruits and hung from the ceiling. The supposed links to Druids and Norse myths don’t even make sense in this context.
