The Agbadza dance originated from the Ewe people of Ghana, Togo, Benin, and parts of Southwestern Nigeria as a war dance called Atrikpui. The Ewe used songs and dances to motivate their warriors during times of war and oppression. After a period of peace in the 1920s, the Ewe began using some of their old songs for entertainment, evolving Atrikpui into the Agbadza dance.
