Heroin Trade (1994): ABC Australia travels to Burma, modern-day Myanmar, to investigate the complications of the country's heroin trade, which forms part of the so-called Golden Triangle. While government officials assert their attempts to eradicate the trade, they have also been accused of cooperating with heroin smugglers and producers. ABC talks to government officials, critics and local farmers on the controversial issue.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
Synopsis: Myanmar, formally called Burma, forms part of the Golden Triangle, an area shared with Laos and Thailand, and one of the most notorious opium-producing regions of the world. SLORC, the military government in Burma which took control of the country in 1988, claims to be suppressing the trade, yet critics of the regime remain dubious. Yet alleged government involvement is not the only thing preventing the trade's suppression; many tribes and farmers rely on the trade to earn a living, with some risking breaking the law in order to continue their poppy farms. ABC travels to the trading town of Mandalay, north on the Burma road to the military stronghold of Lashio, and then on to a remote area in the Golden Triangle, in its investigation of heroine within Burma.

There isnt enough documentary or movies about this business. It's very interesting. Heroin has always fascinated me since I was a child. All drugs for that matter. I dont know why but when I was young child 10 years old I would always get books about drugs from the library. Reading about lsd and barbiturates to cannabis to stimulant drugs like amphetamines cocaine. Really interesting subject

You are beginning to notice the craziness and hypocrisy. The poppy plant, regardless of international demand and intentions to turn its contents into derivatives like Heroin and all pharmaceuticals, is an ancient traditional food and medicine, in its original, whole-plant form. It has great value to all human beings. Power desires to get in between people and what they value/need, in order to control access, and in the process extract as much manpower and money as possible. Control supply and demand. Control people. It is a sick nightmare.

Yeah, the economy is fucked for everyone who didn’t side with the commies. Opium is practically irrelevant, synthesis of methamphetamines, which are also sold raw, but mainly in pink pills called Yaba has become the regions top earner. More traditional cash crops from the CIA heyday like cannabis and poppy are still grown on a big scale, but they aren’t as profitable as meth. The drug trade keeps up a quasi feudal system in the triangle, while the Myanmar government still is a ruthless genociding dictatorship, but at least it isn’t run by the military any longer.

I know my grandparents had a lot of cats on their farm and that's basically what they were there to do. My grandparents grew all sorts of veggies and had chooks. Once I had to clean up the chook pen and there was a rat nest but I wasn't a farm boy so I was scared/disgusted and when I told my grandpa he asked me why I didn't skewer them with the pitch fork lol. I understand now but back then I didn't know better and no one explained how hard it is to be a farmer.

I generally agree with you both, except I would even forgive people and the human soul/consciousness. But for sure the issue lies much more in human beings than it does in the plants. You know how some spiritual traditions emphasize "judge no one in this plane of existence" or "it is by grace alone, not by good works, we are saved (christianity)". To be well-adapted or "morally upright" in this world is not always what people think. There is more going on, on this planet... trauma, and a diverse landscape of forces that hardly leave a fair platform for all. But yes, personally, I think we are supposed to have access to this plant in our lives, and it is a great food and medicine.

Things have changed for Heroin supplies since this was filmed. The area that produces and grows the poppies.in.the east (golden triangle) Burma, Laos etc.had increased its production at least ten fold. Also the Afghanistany fields are now the most productive in the world and supply the majority of the poppies converted into Heroin. On top of that after USA'S legalisation of cannabis the Mexico increased their opium and thus Heroin production to make up for the loss of their biggest earner at the time which was weed. Also columbia and other areas have increased production.of òpium to match an increased usage or should I say epidemic.
@joeblow6202
@joeblow6202 2 жыл бұрын
Not that I want to stop heroin production , although if the government really wanted to stop the production they would pay the farmers some type of grant money to come out and tell the truth and then to go on and plant whatever crops they want. Otherwise where is the incentive to want to stop . They are not even making enough from the opium so what will rice do for them..

I'm not putting people down, really. People that try to blame a substance for their failures in life are horrible people. Everyone makes their own choices. Addiction is always a choice unless someone is forcing it into your body. I've shot meth, and I've shot dope. I've made the conscious decisions that if I skip work and skip classes to go get high, I will end up a fucking loser. What did your poor, innocent friend think was going to happen? Getting "hooked" is a myth. Addiction's a choice.
@1yris1
@1yris1 7 жыл бұрын
thegr8pulido at first it is a choice. Then after a very short time your body gets dependant on it and then you NEED it to function and to feel normal and then at that point death is way easier than trying to get off of it! at least that's what it feels like!!! so yes at first it is a choice but soon becomes something your body thinks it can't live without even though your head says we can't do this anymore it's terrible shit!!
