Do you go the extra mile? Sure, you could make a dinner reservation or buy flowers to show others how much you care. Or you could be really, really 'extra'.
We have chosen to call this film ‘The Extra Mile’ for two reasons…
Firstly, to honour Oom Hollie who captivated us with his incredible strength of body, mind and spirit. At the age of 85, he continues to greet each day with a smile, intent on making the most every single moment.
Secondly, to celebrate the remote community of Heuningvlei, who stand by each through all the ups and downs of life. They truly embody the spirit of Ubuntu - I am who I am because of who we all are. They remind us of the divine spark of goodness inherent within each being.
Whether it is empowering others to continue to pursue their dreams or encouraging people not to let life's tragedies derail hope, we can inspire others to keep giving life their best. Let's go the extra mile!

Grandpa has indeed seen many summers, has walked through significant hardships and although the man he is and the life he’s lived is beautiful enough, because of you we get to hear and benefit from his hard won wisdom. He really says it all...speaks directly into true wealth, into the value of community, how intimately connected we are to one another and to the land, and to how loving it all is what gives everything meaning. Thank you for giving us this real life glimpse into what “the good life” and being fully human really looks like. He has blessed me and I feel the impact of “meeting” him already informing the way I will approach this day.

He wants to stay busy, physically and mentally, as long as he can. His work gives his life meaning and purpose. Growing food from your own land, with your own labor.... that's true satisfaction that most of us will never know.

I used to race the dirt roads past all these places 15 years ago on hugely overpowered motorcycles at breakneck speeds (truly) to see who could reach destinations first. I saw all the beauty of the place as a blur, but never slowed down to meet the people. They used to wave as these noisy machines kicking up huge dust clouds would race past and we would wave back when and if we were able. As an older man now, with young children, I am ashamed that I never slowed down to sit with these people to get to know them. I've learned that speed is not all that its cracked up to be, and going slower to drink in the beautiful humanity from Oom Hollie en kie would be far more fulfilling. Respek and dankheid.

I get the message as: find things that you love to do and then do them with all your heart. These films are such tremendous messages for us in the USA, in Japan and other overdeveloped countries where depression, stress, meaninglessness of life is the norm. And here in these films people do simple things, work physically with their hands and are content. They live in the moment, savoring each moment and are content. Such lessons for us. Such tremendous, inspiring messages. Thank you
