My favourite, distant memory of Port Augusta was when we three Aussie friends caught the sleeper train, the Indian-Pacific, from Augusta to traverse the Nullabor to go to Perth for a holiday. We changed trains here to do so. While we were waiting for its readiness, the engine driver called us up to the engine of the train and for a few kilometres and we had a wonderful experience blowing the train's whistle at the W signs before rushing back to our compartment at a stop. But yes, Port Augusta is mainly a railway junction small city.
