I started watching more of the Chinese Super League after Kevin Muscat became manager of Shanghai Port. He was a good player for Rangers (the club I support), winning a treble in the 2002-3 season with 20 appearances, and also played for Crystal Palace, Wolves and Millwall in England. I watch the J.LEAGUE since there are international streams free on KZbin and he had a successful stint as manager of Yokohama F. Marinos, winning two trophies and narrowly missed another title to Vissel Kobe. So I decided to keep track of him again to see how he does in China. So far, Muscat is doing brilliantly with his side having no loses and two points at the top of the table above Shanghai Shenhua en-route for another title. I could see him winning both the league and FA Cup easily. He is a top-tier manager, and earned praise from his Aussie counterpart and EPL-side Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou. Maybe someday he'll be a manager in Europe again, he was rumoured to get the Sunderland job but Michael Beale (the snake) got it instead. He would suit well at Rangers. There aren't any English commentary channels for the CSL (to my knowledge), but there are a few on KZbin which stream the games live in Mandarin. Chengdu Rongcheng annihilated Qingdao Hainiu 5-1 most recently, who are now sitting 3rd in the table at 32 points and presumably an ACL spot. The fans are very passionate and the league is unpredictable with exciting scorelines. As much as I love Japanese football, it can be a bit constrictive and conservative. Chinese football offers a more brutal style of football albeit definitely not as high technical level. Shandong Taishan did quite well in the ACL last year, earning a 2nd place group stage spot above Incheon United of the K League to make it past the Round of 16 and even managed into the Quarter Finals against Marinos after winning against Kawasaki Frontale. Overall, a very underrated league with very high potential. Hopefully they can learn from the MLS and avoid making the mistakes of spending too much; too quick like before. Build up from a grassroots level with sound infrastructure and go from there.
