The .45 Colt is one of the most popular of the Cowboy Action cartridges, but discover why it was actually not favored by most civilians for the 1873 Single Action Army Colt revolver.

Well, I can tell you how sad it is that the gun shop your talking about is closed. I bought and traded lot of guns from that gun shop. I remember back in the seventies Ralph talked me out of buying a Bren Ten and I bought a browning Hi Power instead. Boy I wish I had some of the guns I traded including a model 29 Smith in a wooden case. I still load and shoot 45 long colts in smokeless and black powder loads I make. Totally enjoy shooting the older cartridges. God Bless and Amen to that!

My understanding of the history of the 45 Colt and use in handguns only came from an article I read about Browning and Winchester. An agreement that Winchester would only manufacture WCF rounds in rifles and keep out of the handgun market and Colt would stop selling rifles (Colt-Burgess and Lightning) and leave that market to Winchester. Thus the 45 Colt was not sold in Winchester rifles as it was part of the agreement.

Even back in '73 when Mr Blue aquired his BH Convertible , there were common powders well suited for loads starting at Standard , working up to hot . 4227 , and 2400 are excellent powders for that to this day . Underwhelming? What kind of cartridges do you shoot in it? Standard pressure loads like the original 40 grain black powder loads, or common anemic '45 acp esque and 'cowboy" loads? Because standard pressure .45 Colt as originally developed will push a 255 gr slug at 1,000+ fps. Only recently have slower burning smokeless powders been developed to mimic the pressure of the old black powder loads, giving you those original high velocities without fear of blowing up your gun like common fast burning smokeless powder would have.

duelist1954 has a great video showing an original 45 colt cartridge and the reason it wouldn't work in the 1873. The '73 had no issues feeding straight walled cartridges because of the way the elevator works, but they did need a rim to extract the spent casing.

@@66smithra 1873 rifles are made in 44 Magnum and 357 Magnum as well, both straight walled cartridges. However, if you look at modern cases for 45 Colt and both of those Magnum cartridges, you’ll see a small rebate immediately above the rim. It makes the rim surface bigger without making the rim diameter larger. The only reason I can think of for this groove is better extraction in lever guns.

And the experience of the smoky atmosphere and even the at length cleaning makes it fun. I would not hesitate carrying that into big bear country. I don't like the black powder mess but the pressures are often much lower with black powder than smokeless. That being said for reasons I'm not going into the the Army actually shifted to the loading for the break action. The men vastly preferred the slightly reduced loading so even the military didn't like the long colt. To much recoil. The .45 auto was actually meant to duplicate the break action round. Yeah, that is not what most people think because it's just a little obscure and sounds wonky. Since many modern lever guns are chambered for .45 long colt this dude is obviously very wrong about not being able to feed them. The problem was that the originals had almost no rim and the extractors didn't work reliably. The modern cartridges have been altered so the extractors do work fixing the problem. I like this guy but he's not going to be my go to guy for information.

The reason that the 45 LC wasn't chambered in a rifle wasn't only because bottleneck cartridges worked better, but also because there wasn't enough rim for reliable extraction. The rim of the 45 LC is the same exact size as the 44-40, but the case is bigger around. Leaves a lot less room for extraction. Modern web head cases have an extraction groove in them that the old balloon head cases didn't, which is why it's chambered in rifles now. If it was only the straight wall design, they could have made it work just like the 44 Henry and etc., but straight wall design coupled with lack of extraction room equalled a strike out.

Also Winchester probably didn’t want to chamber their gun in a Colt caliber. The WCF line of cartridges was made specifically for rifles and many cartridges back then that were designed for repeaters were bottlenecked. Today the 45 Colt still has a relatively small rim but it’s much better than before, but the only reason it’s chambered in rifles is because it won the test of time. The other cartridges went into obscurity with the advent of smokeless powder and home reloading. Even to this day, though, the 44-40 is a better rifle and especially black powder cartridge!

@@talisikid1618 well that’s what I said. The 45 Colt won the test of time. There are still plenty of people who own 44-40 because it’s better at shooting black powder and Cowboy action has increased interest in these guns. But to the average gun buyer, most have never even heard of 44-40. That’s why the rifles are chambered in 45 Colt today (as well as Schofields, etc) even though it’s historically inaccurate. It’s out of convenience today.

60% of the colt single action army’s were chambered in the 45 colt the second was the 44-40 otherwise known as the frontier six shooter and then the 38-40 otherwise known as the 38 wcf and the 32-20 known as 32wcf but the 45 colt was very popular in the old colt revolver it’s one of my favorite cartridges to load and shoot I handload the cartridge and cast for it

Since the SAA was originally sold to the Army exclusively, and the Army specification was for .45 caliber, it seems reasonable there were plenty of .45 Colt SAAs. Thanks for the info.

The .45 Colt was the most produced caliber in 1st Generation SAA . In order were .45 Colt , .44 WCF, .38 WCF , .32 WCF , and .41 Long Colt . Another interpretation , is that many shooters used a Bigger rifle on purpose , instead of limiting to what today we would call Pistol Caliber Carbines .

ALL the original Single Action Army revolvers were chambered in .45 Colt, since that was the official military caliber. The 44/40 chambered Colts were commercial (civilian) Colts (the Colt Frontier) based on the SAA.

@@dwightehowell8179 That's true, they had already cut the .45 Colt loading back from a 260 grain bullet with 40 grains of 3fg black powder, to a 255 grain bullet with 28 grains of 3fg, because of a large influx of European Immigrants (a great many from Ireland), most of whom had never even seen a pistol, much less fired one, and they couldn't handle the recoil. Later, in the 1880s, they were both replaced with another. 45 caliber cartridge, the M1887 Military Ball Cartridge.

Worthy Brother, a few years back I purchased the Ruger Redhawk in .45 ACP/ .45 Colt. It pairs up well with my Henry in .45 Colt. I appreciate shooting both as it is a fine cartridge/caliber. Thanks for another GREAT video!

I’m after a Ruger Redhawk in 45LC/45ACP as we speak. They we fairly available before everything went sideways. I hope to have one in my grubby little mitts within the next few months.

Poland, because of their proximity to the plains of Asia and having to fight constant wars against horse mounted Asian tribes had some of the best cavalry in the World. The Father of the US Army cavalry is Kazimierz Pulaski. A Polish cavalry officer who fought for the USA during the Revolutionary War and was killed defending Savannah Harbor from the British. Cavalry was not as widely used in the West as dime store novels and hollywood movies and tv shows have led people to believe. If you follow the histories of the battles, Infantry mounted on horseback and on foot were by far the most commonly used troops in the west. I own a beautiful S&W model 25 custom shop .45 Colt. One of my favorite revolvers.

$100 for a 50rd box of cowboy loads... Insanity is exactly the right term for it. I know I've paired down a few of my more obscure calibers for this reason. Picked up a Savage 99 in .308 recently and sold off my 99 in .300sav as the ammunition is so hard to find this past year. My primer supply has nearly dried up so I'm only shooting factory these days. 7.62 NATO, .223/5.56, .22lr, and 9mm is about all I shoot anymore. .44mag here and there but that's only because I'd just bought a box of large pistol primers right before everything dried up. Have less than 100 small rifle, so my .454's are getting neglected. Just a rough time to be a shooter, and I'm still not seeing primers anywhere near me. Not seeing factory revolver ammo either, especially in the big bore magnums. Anyway, very interesting video as always. No matter what I seem to learn something new every time I watch one of your vids.
