I have applied leeches twice in the last five years to a patient. Once for a patient who had a massive haematoma on their thumb. Basically we just manually put them on and they would fill up with 5 to 10 cc of blood and then spontaneously fall off. The other time was for a haematoma on a foot. It’s actually really fascinating. I also have a friend who did maggot therapy on a terrible pressure wound for one of her patients in a long-term care facility. We live in British Columbia, Canada. Another thing they are starting to experiment with is tilapia and fish skin for burn victims in the Victoria burn unit.

Medical history is a fascinating branch of the history of science and full of drama. Great interview! This “not that kind of doctor” really enjoyed it!

I found Lindsey’s historical tweets on Twitter and also saw her appearance on Rogan. I am a major fan of hers and will buy any book she puts out now and in the future! Her new work is tremendous, and the Butchering Art was a great read as well to anybody interested 😊

This was riveting. Love this dark subject and yet I don’t think it’s talked about enough. I love that Dr. Fitzharris calls herself a storyteller and I love her stories.

This is one of my favorite episodes to date. What a fascinating topic and I had no idea this was a literary subject. I’ve ordered the book and can’t wait to start reading it!

re: bloodletting - it's also performed for crush injuries. And yes, there are therapeutic leeches! They're raised in a sterile lab environment. :) I'm one of the weirdos that was already here.

I recently saw that contraption used to hold children still when getting an x-ray on TikTok. It's totally clear and is molded around the top half of the body. You can see the child's arms raised and kept in place during the x-ray. It's very fascinating and I'm sure a life saver for keeping small children in place. Is there such a thing as breath injection? Since the patient was having trouble breathing and received an injection that rhymed with death, I immediately thought of breath! Perhaps there's a more technical name but I don't know if it sounds like death. Or perhaps the dictator couldn't think of the name either. 😋 Fascinating guest! I could listen to her for hours! There was also another recent TikTok about the inventor of Listerine. It was initially created as a cleaning product and was later discovered to be a good mouthwash. Thanks for all your incredible guests! 🤩

I have an idea for someone to interview. Dr. Adam Weltler Emergency Medicine at University of Tennessee Hospital. He is a doctor focusing on diagnosis with emergency Ultrasounds and this is his second career. Prior to that he was a camera operator and worked on several tv shows (he's on IMDM).

That was really amazing!! If I could make medical history wishes, then that'd be a request for more female medical history. As in: Women who did cool stuff in the field and are talked about way too little!

I'm pretty sure we refer to the "bloodletting" of hemochromatosis as "Phlebotomy", and you get about 500 cc at a time periodically. Hemodialysis won't remove blood, just products in the serum. So you have to have the actual blood removed.

Another interesting question in medical history: How did the symbol for medicine deviate from the Rod of Asclepius, the patron god of healers, to the Caduceus of Hermes, the patron god of merchants and thieves?

I"m surprised to hear you also play videogames. I think this is the first time I hear you mention it. I don't eadily disclose this to peers or supervisors even when asked for your hobbies. I feel like there's some taboo around it in the medical world. Perhaps a topic for discussion.
