As soon as the general public starts to lose the perception of Disney being a "once in a lifetime vacation destination," that's when they'll start to be in trouble. When the super bowl winning quarterback says, "I'm going to Universal Studios!" It's game over. Great video as always champ

I think that particular narrative is quickly gaining traction. I see it everywhere online and it's becoming more and more difficult to keep defending Disney's anti-consumer decisions. I anticipate it's going to be a while before Disney sees any dramatic attendance drops, but I think that Epic will play a large role in that.

I worked at Walt Disney World for 15 years. For many years, they treated their cast members (especially college program) like disposable garbage. They had a philosophy of "you don't like it? Leave! We have a line of people to replace you." Over many years, that reputation came back and bit them in the butt. They were begging people to work there. If you had a pulse, you were hired. The quality of guest service went down the toilet. The point of that story is that when Disney acts invincible and treats people poorly, it does catch up to them eventually. It might take years, even decades, but there will be consequences for their decisions. They try to squeeze every penny they can out of you and give you the bare minimum in return. It's sad.

Having worked both Disney and Universal, the difference in how employeres are treated is wide. Even just little touches. Like for Thanksgiving every employee at Universal - fun time, part time, etc - gets a 10lb turkey. It must be a huge cost to them, but its a nice touch.

The tragic thing is that the opposite of this phenomenon is how Disney parks built up their reputation in the first place- invest now, it might inflate costs without obvious returns for a while, but when those returns come down the years they will be big. That attitude is extremely rare across corporate America today, it was probably never common exactly but at this point it’s almost mythical. If a company is taking on massive losses now, it’s way more likely that they are simply burning through an endless stream of investor money in order to gobble up market share, with the plan of accumulating enough to be able to rapidly jack up prices without consumers having another choice. Apparently the year after I left the college program, they stopped allowing college program interns to trade shifts. What kind of crap is that? We were employees, just like everyone else, and people get sick or have family come. As long as someone is covering the shifts, why does it matter to Disney? As long as we have enough money in our paycheck to cover the exorbitant rent they are taking out…

And even The Mummy, which has some nostalgia but isn't really current IP--it's one of the best coasters at the park (out in Hollywood at least). I whole heartily agree. Looking at the old Universal Studios they really did need an update as much as I loved Jaws, Earthquake and King Kong, Pyshco tour they needed to get better and I think Disney pushed them to do that. I am a long way from Orlando but from what I am seeing on the Jurassic Park and Harry Potter rides my kids seem much more interested in them right now than in Disney. I won't even let them see the Star Wars Prequel or Sequel trilogies they are trash and I wouldn't even bother taking my kids to Star Wars land in the parks. With so much else to see and do. Curious what Poseidon Entertaiment thinks about Lego Land, Sea World and Knotts as comparisons.

@@largol33t1 hey what’s up? Firstly I think you might have misinterpreted what I wrote. I don’t think universal is complacent. I said they COULD be if Disney was not around. I think that they absolutely listen to what the fans want. Example: they opened jimmy fallon and fast n furious. Two rides that are screen based simulators… yikes. Guests were not happy and were very vocal about it. So what did they do next? Opened Hagrids. An absolutely amazing experience all around. Then they followed that up with Velocicoaster. Again totally awesome ride! One of the best coasters in the world. And they have yet to play their big card, Epic Universe. So they listened to complaints and shifted their style of attractions. Secondly, as for more Harry Potter stuff, there’s certainly room for it but they could easily overdo it to where it becomes obnoxious. So we’ll so what they do or don’t do. Thirdly, this video levied a lot of harsh criticisms at Disney. Some were warranted and fair but others I would totally disagree. I believe he said Galaxies edge was bad. Thats an extremely hot take that 95% of guests would disagree with. Disney has had some missteps recently but they are still the top dog. A few missteps won’t change that. But that keeps pushing Universal to do better and that’s great

Build good rides and people will come. Universal is figuring this out. They actually care about what the guests want. The guests wanted less screen based rides. Universal took notes and provided in a big way with Hagrids and Velocicoaster. And I think it paid off. Most people go the theme parks to ride rides. Disney is basically a really expensive themed shopping mall. Thankfully for Disney, they have their name and nostalgia to fall back on, which is the main reason for their success. People get tunnel vision when it comes to Disney. They basically have a cult following. I truly hope Universal keeps innovating, putting guests first, and building better rides and heavily themed areas and brings Disney to it's knees.

One advantage that Universal has is that Disney parks are really designed more for toddlers. You don't see many rides for teenagers or adults. Forget the fact that Universal's Hulk roller coaster is themed off of a superhero----you don't see roller coasters like that at Disney. The most famous "roller coaster" at Disney is----if you take away the spaceship theming and that much of the ride is in the dark-----the "wild maus" ride that you commonly see at carnivals.

How is Rockin Rollercoaster, Tower of Terror or Expedition Everest even remotely for young kids? I’ve never seen toddlers in Big Thunder or Splash Mountain or Slinky dog either. Even most of Disney’s non Rollercoaster rides are not made for young children. Hulk is barely themed at all. Just because it is named the Hulk does not mean it is themed well. It’s really no different than a Six Flags coaster named after a DC superhero. Disney does not erect outside tracks like that because they believe in better theming. Here's my two cents: It's worth noting that, since Universal is connected to Comcast, they don't need to get as much out of the parks as Disney does. This, however, is no excuse for the excessive penny-pinching of Disney. However, ever since Potter, the way I see it, Disney has been chasing Universal. Not in terms of profit, but absolutely in terms of innovation and approach. Without an ambitious, imaginative person like Michael Eisner or Walt Disney, they naturally fall behind the more creative, and less restrictive people at Universal (Note, even though the executives don't typically have a design role, they are the judge, jury, and executioner of what goes from concept to reality). Another thing Disney really doesn't understand: Kinetics. Now, what is kinetics? As it pertains to theme parks, it's essentially how many moving things there are in an area. Islands of Adventure has god-tier Kinetics, the best out of every park I've been to, and probably in the world overall. Almost everywhere you look, there's some sort of moving element or ride to observe. Of the two lakeside coasters, Velocicoaster and Hulk, both are visual marvels that dominate their sides of the lake. Here's a comparison: Super Nintendo World vs Galaxy's Edge. Super Nintendo World: Literally puts you into the Mushroom Kingdom with Iconic and recognizable figures and locations. You have Bowser's Castle, a Toad House, Mt. Beanpole, and Peach's Castle, complete with references to the legendary Super Mario 64. Not only is there an interactive game integrated into the land, but everything is moving. Koopas patrol from side to side, Goombas waddle back and forth. Everywhere you turn, there's something to see. Even if Mario Kart Koopa's Challenge and Yoshi's Adventure don't quite meet Rise of the Resistance, the main attraction is the land itself - as weird as that is to say. Even when there's only one visual ride to contribute to kinetics, the land does it well enough on its own. Galaxy's Edge: The entire area is devoid of life outside of vendors and guests. I don't care if the concept had roaming droids, or if characters walk around, there is nothing, I repeat, *nothing* that holds my attention there. I'm in *FREAKING STAR WARS* and I expect to see cool Star Wars stuff! Have drones disguised as spaceships taking off and landing backstage in the distance, bring in some of those roaming droids, just have something there for me to see, but they don't. There's no kinetics (Pandora gets away due to its nature elements such as waterfalls, but only just barely). It just feels... dead, which is weird for a new for 2019 land. Something you also didn't mention: Disney's cranking up the price on all fronts, particularly on Passholders, and it seems like they're actively trying to remove them from the equation. This may prove to be a big mistake later on. Passholders, while they may cut into potential tourist revenue, are tried-and-true customers that should be shown some respect. They're the primary source of revenue outside of peak season. The general goal of a park should be to run your park in such a way that people *want* to spend their money. You can do this through several methods, but generally, the best way is to just give people the appropriate "bang for their buck," so to speak. This is a positive interaction, as it is typically an optional purchase that may still grant you benefits. Universal has this pretty good with the Power-Up Band and interactive wands opening up new ways to explore the lands they're attached to. Right now, Disney's trying to create an environment where people *need* to spend it. This is a negative interaction, because nobody likes being forced to give up money. I myself welcome Universal as the new industry leader, it's about time they got recognized for what they've been doing. A bit of a shame that Disney had to haul itself to a flaming dumpster for this to happen, but maybe after some time, they'll learn what a good customer experience is again (after a complete removal of everyone in an executive position, of course). (Also, it's hilarious that Universal's *budget* resort has classier theming than two of Disney's higher-tier hotels)
@PoseidonEntertainment
@PoseidonEntertainment 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot to digest here, but I'll offer a brief reply: One thing about Universal being owned by Comcast is how negatively I think it has affected the parks. The last decade of screen based attractions definitely seem like Comcast interference, but I think negative guest reaction has led them to back off and let Universal act with more independence. I suppose overall it's a good thing because Universal has most definitely reversed course, but at the same time we're now exposed to attractions like Fast and Furious. I also absolutely agree that Disney has been chasing Universal. Not just with its need to create "immersive" IP driven lands, but with their overall attraction design as well. All three of their trackless dark rides in Florida show an abandonment of classic Disney design principles. Whereas older attractions, ranging from Pirates, to Horizons, to The Great Movie Ride focused on dense scenes enveloped in detail and unique elements, their newer attractions are trying to emulate Universal's narrative approach to screen-based experiences. It's the "you're in the middle of this situation and now chaos is happening" narrative approach of something like Transformers that creates a less fulfilling experience because so much is happening at once that you don't even have time to digest it. That being said, I don't hate this type of attraction, but it's a downgrade from any of the classics that Disney and Universal used to produce. High capacity attractions with large footprints that rely on physical elements and sets, not only feel more substantial and have a powerful sense of atmosphere, but the slower pace allows more time to digest the overall narrative and experience. My breakdown of this might be a bit of a mess because I'm just quickly typing this out, but hopefully I've made the point clear enough. In regards to kinetics, I've made this point in another video before and directly compared this particular element between Super Nintendo World and Galaxy's Edge. I can't remember the timestamp, but it's here: "The Creative Bankruptcy of Disney Leadership: Why the Mediocrity of New Disney Rides Doesn't Deliver": kzbin.info/www/bejne/gae6cmiVfJ18qpI I'm glad that I'm not the only one who noticed how important this element is to the overall experience. I also agree with your point about the kinetics of IoA. If you're looking at the lagoon from Port of Entry, I definitely take your point about the Hulk and Velocicoaster. In addition, the Sky Trolley is running out over the water and you can see elements of all the lands beckoning you in, like the Jurassic Park Discovery Center, The Olive, Hogwarts and Poseidon's Trident back behind Mythos. Finally, I completely agree with your statement on how both parks are encouraging people to spend money. The theming of the tribute stores is so well done that I can't help but buy something when I go in them. In contrast, it's getting to the point where you actively need to spend more money at Disney to even have a good time. I'm in complete agreeance there.

Because you have this urge to do it I think you owe it to yourself to see if you like splitting your vacation among the resorts. I don't know what your budget or individual preferences are but one thing to consider if you choose a Universal hotel is whether you value being able to take a boat from your hotel to the parks or if you prefer being adjacent to the Waterpark. And then if you want to save some money you can go for something like the Endless Summer resort where you take a bus but it is a very short ride of about 5 minutes depending on lights and traffic.

Going to WDW used to be an immersive experience where you can leave the real world behind and essentially be a kid again. Now that the "experience" includes being tethered to your cell phone, it's lost it's escapism factor for me. Standing in line to ride a brief attraction has also lost its' appeal, as well as booking meals for rather mediocre food and drinks. I'd rather say goodbye to Disney than put up with this manipulation in the name of having fun.

I think it's extremely distasteful how they treat his legacy. I hate that he's quoted all over the Epcot construction walls: "There's really no secret about our approach. We keep moving forward-opening up new doors and doing new things-because we're curious. And curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." As if he would endorse an extremely expensive demolition project to create more lawn space for food booths serving cafeteria versions of "international cuisine". I think the Walt statue that they plan to put behind Spaceship Earth is even worse, as if its his endorsement for the continued destruction of such a great park. Not that I think Walt would have ever endorsed the original Epcot, but at least it reflected the ambition and creativity that him and his Imagineers shot for.

The lack of resort theming is something that's really been bothering me lately. The variety in the Grand Floridian, Fort Wilderness Lodge, the Polynesian, and Grand Californian over here in CA it's like the theming didn't stop at the entrance gates but would follow the guests to their rooms. Who wants to stay at a modern blocky condo looking building when going on vacation?

I take your point, but I admittedly have a lot of issues with the Grand Floridian. I thought about directly addressing it in this video, but I couldn't find a way to make into the video in a timely manner. The point I wanted to make was that I think the "elegant Floridian" beach theme is fantastic on its own, but the theming is becoming increasingly ruined. The addition of the Alice in Wonderland splash area and random rockwork at the pool is completely out of place. In addition, the slow retheming of the lobby to Beauty and Beast and the Mary Poppins references everywhere is extremely distasteful. It's becoming a mess and I wonder how long it'll be until the hotel gets its own IP version of the Contemporary's Incredibles rooms.

This makes me so sad. I grew up an hour from Disney & was fortunate enough to have a family who could afford annual passes almost every year. I grew up going to Disney at least once a month, usually more. Disney has SUCH a nostalgic connection for me. My last annual pass expired 5 years ago, and my family actually got an annual pass to Universal 3 years ago. We had actually never been before, but I was so impressed with the immersiveness and theming in those parks, and the rides were substantially more exciting and enjoyable. I took a day-trip to Disney a few weeks ago, and was so massively disappointed in the direction it is going. It no longer feels as magical as it once did, and it’s begun to feel like a massive corporate cash grab. Plus the customer service and experience overall seems to have dropped significantly since Covid. I am so disappointed. I still love the parks for nostalgia value, but it’s lost it’s touch.

I used to be a CM at Disneyland a few years back. I had some co-workers who were at Disney for years leave and work for Universal Studios with all of them saying that Universal was a more fulfilling job, had better management and organization, and overall a better work experience. And that's not just from one former co-worker or two, that was ALL of the people who moved jobs. Already goes to show how much care Universal places in everything starting with their direct staff who are the one to work and make magic (or whatever term Universal uses).

Very interesting video essay. I do believe that Universal may actually have a chance to compete directly with Disney in a few years if they continue on their current path. I don't really keep up on the theme park hotel scene since they always seemed like a huge waste of money, but it's surprising to see how Disney is literally ripping apart the theme of their hotels just to stuff in more IPs like with the contemporary. I saw in the comments how they've added an Alice in Wonderland Splash Zone to the Grand Floridian which is an absolute atrocity. I thought people were joking until I looked it up or myself. I've stayed in the Grand Floridian a couple of times, but if I had to wake up and see some ugly looking bronze piece of scrap outside my room I'd probably check out immediately lol Regardless, I do think that Universal still lacks heavily behind Disney when it comes to overall park theming. While they have been adding great lands and attractions over the years, it doesn't change the fact that these lands are still interconnected with the old infrastructure of the parks. Areas around the lake in Universal Studios Florida or the Lost Continent in Islands of Adventure really lack the proper theming to pull a guest into an experience and at times can feel like a really dinky shopping mall rather than a multi-million dollar theme park. Compare these places with something on the lines of Disney's Animal Kingdom (Ignoring Dinoland of course) and it becomes abundantly clear that they lack the polish, quality, and feel you would typically expect from a theme park. If Universal fixes these areas of the park while at the same time adding new experiences, I 100& believe that Universal will overtake Disney as the leader in Theme Park Design in the near future I will say that Universal can, if given a completely blank slate, provide something that is at the same or better level of quality compared to Disney. Volcano bay is a spectacular themed water park that does many things that you would never see a Disney park in America do. It makes me excited to see what they will do with their Epic Universe

I did think of addressing the Grand Floridian here, but I couldn't find a way to fit it into the script without making the entire thing excessively lengthy. I specifically went and shot footage for it to make a point, but the thematic inconsistency of the hotel goes beyond just that. So let me lay it out: 1. I believe that the intentional theme of the hotel is something along the lines of "turn of the 20th century luxury Florida resort", which seems pretty obvious. I filmed a number of art exhibits that look like they belong in 1910 around the lobby and even noticed that the large DVC advertisement goes along with this aesthetic by depicting a beach with people wearing early 20th century bathing suits. I know that the architecture of the hotel is based on a historical California resort, but that doesn't bother me and I like the theme otherwise. 2. As you pointed out, there is indeed an Alice in Wonderland splash zone which is an odd move in and of itself. A trend that I'm noticing is that Disney considers the new theme of the hotel to be "elegance". Even more odd still, the main pool has no theme but has a rock cliff with a waterfall. I like the inclusion of the volcano rockwork and slide at the Polynesian because it obviously makes sense, but why is there a cliff at the Grand? 3. To continue off of "Disney considers the new theme of the hotel to be 'elegance'", Citricos was recently refurbished to reflect "Mary Poppins Returns" in its theming. It appears that anything remotely English is perceived as "high end" and fitting for the resort. I see that they also feel this way about France, as they put in Mrs. Potts and Chip into the lobby tilework. A few years ago, the lobby bar was also completely rethemed to Beauty and the Beast, renaming it "The Enchanted Rose" and putting in a picture of the Beast's castle. While I do consider the original theming of the Grand Floridian to be a bit generic, I think its thematic destruction is outright insulting. I believe that it's quite audacious to take the theming of the resort and dabble in a bit of "elegance" from people who fail to even understand what it is and call it a day. The IP inclusion has absolutely nothing to do with the theme, and I wonder how long it'll be until it gets it's equivalent of "Incredibles at the Contemporary" with Mary Poppins no doubt. In addition, I do think that I have been quite unfair in my assertions recently. I've been ragging a lot on Disney and I've been lenient on Universal because I'm optimistic that they're taking their parks in a different direction. However, I do completely agree that particular areas need massive amounts of attention. Other than the attraction being terrible, Fast and Furious makes very little sense in the San Francisco area of the park, and Springfield is an absolute eyesore. I also find that a number of older attractions don't receive the budget they need to stay in working order like E.T. or really anything in Seuss Landing or Toon Lagoon. It's a shame too because I think Seuss especially has a lot of potential but it's so poorly maintained because it obviously doesn't bring in people like Potter or Jurassic. I appreciate that Hulk and Spider-Man got refurbs, but the surrounding land itself needs an update of some sort. I was thinking of producing a video within a few months of Universal's own shortcomings to balance things out, but I have other ideas that I want to get out first.

I just discovered your channel last week and my husband and I are hooked. Your analyses of Disney’s issues are really well-done--they capture the frustration and now, the anger, that many of of us Disney fans have been feeling for years. My first trip to Disney World was during the heyday of the Eisner years--before he started cutting corners--and it WAS magic. We Disney Diehards were willing to pay “Disney Prices” because the parks transported us to another world where you could forget about reality for a short, very precious time. It doesn’t feel that way any more and your videos do a great job of dissecting just why that is. So thank you and keep up the great work-and here’s hoping that someone at Disney corporate headquarters comes across your channel and starts paying attention before the damage is irreversible.

Realistically, I know that nobody at Disney would take me seriously, even if exposed to what I'm saying. However, I recognize that I'm one of many voices that are trying to change the narrative. If the once or twice in a lifetime "big spenders" are told that Disney isn't worth the effort or cost and that message spreads far enough, then that's how I see Disney will be forced to change course. Universal already did so with their over-reliance on screen based attractions, and even that's when they were continuing to see record attendance numbers. However, it appears that they were able to see the effect of the diminishing value this created for their parks. I'm not confident that Chapek will learn this lesson unless Disney is hit in the wallet.

I'll even say that I prefer Disney Springs to Downtown Disney. To be fair, I also haven't been nearly as critical of Universal because I'm optimistic that they've changed course. Older attractions like E.T. or all of Seuss have a serious lack of maintenance standards. The food can be absolutely awful in certain locations, and I'm pretty sure that their top tier hotels only come with express because otherwise they'd have trouble getting people to stay in them. Royal Pacific needs complete interior refurbs and I recently stayed at Portofino and found it tacky. Their best and newer hotels seem far more lively and interesting and so need less to incentivize people I feel.

I couldn't agree more with your opinions on this. I took my family to Orlando in the summer of 2019 and did Disney Parks and Universal (paid for the fast pass at Universal and was well worth the expense). Disney was so overcrowded and wait times so extensive that we simply did not enjoy our time there at all. If we didn't have a Fastpass, the ride experience was even worse. We waited 2+ hours for both the Mine Ride and the Na'vi River Journey and watched the Fastpass line (which never slowed down) overtake the standby line. For every 100 people they let on, they would allow 10 from the standby line. It was frustrating, to say the least. After waiting that long, the ride experience was mediocre. Who wants to wait 2 hours for a boat ride where the main attraction is a large animatronic at the end? The ride was nothing but neon props and screens. Our kids enjoyed our experience at Universal 100 times over than they did at Disney. Paying the extra money for the Fastpass there helped us enjoy our time together and we got to ride the rides we loved multiple times. I have gone to Disney quite often since 1995, but I feel my time there is done. The money spent is not worth the experience received.

Granted, I think that Disneyland is the only park to really have survived. At least Galaxy's Edge is an addition and not a replacement there, even if I feel the land doesn't deliver. It's a far worse addition to Hollywood Studios in that it still doesn't address capacity issues with the park. The fierce loyalty of Disneyland locals is also such a great factor in preserving that park. If anything, I think the park suffered far worse under Eisner with the Rocket Rods and Paul Pressler. DCA though? Easily the worst U.S. park I think.

I completely agree with all your points. There are a couple of thing you haven't mentioned that I think DO matter: 1. Guests of Size: Universal has a horrible track record here. It's a known fact that Americans aren't getting any smaller, yet almost every single one of Universal's attractions are not at all accommodating to guests of size. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a moderately overweight person unable to fit on Escape From Gringott's or Forbidden Journey. Universal has a HORRIBLE (and well deserved) reputation among guests of size and it's something they need to change if they really want to overtake Disney. It's almost comical that the new Secret Life of Pets attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood is also extremely unfriendly towards guests of size. I'm not talking about morbidly obese people here....just moderately overweight American people. Up until Flights of Passage, there was not a Disney ride that 99.9% of the American population could not fit on. And even Flights of Passage is much better than many Universal Attractions. 2. Attractions that infants and grandparents can experience together: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, It's a Small World, Kilimanjaro Safaris, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Jungle Cruise, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Peoplemover, Spaceship Earth, The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Living with the Land, Journey Into Imagination, Frozen Ever After, Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, Toy Story Mania and Na'vi River Journey. These are all D and E ticket attractions at Disney World that guests of any age or height can experience together. An 80 year old grandparent can take their 6 month old grandchild on any of these rides. Other than Cat in the Hat at Islands of Adventure, there is not a single D or E ticket attraction at Universal Orlando that will accommodate a 6 month old and a grandparent. Universal is missing the mark here. A lot of large families love to plan trips together. And while I think most 10-60 year old people will currently have a better experience at Universal Orlando, young children, are severely limited in what they can do. Throw a potentially frail grandparent in to the mix, a moderately overweight member of the family, or someone who doesn't love thrill rides, and the decision is made - Disney World for the win. Universal could start by retrofitting some existing rides to be more accessible to all (E.T., Men In Black with the option to eliminate spinning, Secret Life of Pets). They could even offer a more tame version of Spiderman or Transformers with no height requirement. Universal also desperately needs water rides like It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle cruise. These are appealing to guests of all ages and sizes and they have great capacity as far as guests per hour goes.

The fall of Disney’s dominance of the theme park industry can be party traced back to negotiations with J.K Rowling for Harry Potter, her requirements were for a train and a diagon alley walk through. Disney pitched a tea cup spinner ride themed to the sorting hat. J.K Rowling then sought out other companies to do business with and wound up being courted by Universal. Universal going to far as to have Dr Suess’s widow vouch for them being a good creative partner. Part of the reason the Wizarding World is so great is because J.K Rowling has a contractual out so if she isn’t satisfied with Universal she can revoke the rights for her characters. Universal works best when they’re beholden to other creative partners. Disney is beholden to no one and it’s arrogant belief that it’s the best is a contributing factor to its downfall.

Time for the meat and potatoes of why Disney is in a major decline, especially with how much Disney loves price hikes. Side note, i went to the Polynesian, not to stay, but my family wanted to visit the other resorts as we were staying at the riviera, I like the other resorts, but they seem very streamlined despite the different designs. And even at the riviera, it feels kinda empty, in the sense of being a high rise resort. I did like my stay, but it felt really empty. Disney corporate heads assuming that the company is too big to fail, is why the story David and Goliath is such a well known story. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

For years we stayed at the Polynesian, twice a year with Annual Passes in hand paradise, greeted by Aunty Kau’i with a beautiful lei necklace, and a pond of koi, beautiful lobby with a waterfall. There were authentic shirts from Hawaii sold in the shop and the souvenirs were original to a speciality of the hotel. The food was also deliciously themed and cast members very friendly and helpful. Young children could stay and play at “Neverland” which a fabulous recreation of The Darling room in Peter Pan This gave parents a night out. Now the hotel theming looks like AMC lobby with a Moana and Stitch double feature. If i miss a cute tchotchke, not to worry it’s in every other store and hotel. The only gift shop theming is Tommy Bahama. The food is cruelly overpriced, their own cast members can’t afford to eat in the parks where they work. Disgraceful. I never say, “how much could THIS possibly cost?” The whole experience now feels like a losing game show where I head back to my outrageously priced Disney Hotel which has been ReImagined into “Le Toit Rouge Inn” where I will tend to my disappointment for the rest of the evening

Right? I don't want Disney to fail per se, but I want them to be majorly knocked down a peg. The $1,000/ night hotel and this new genie perk are just idiotic. Not only are the latest Disney attractions underwhelming, but they can also be difficult to actually experience. It's quite possible for a family to go to Hollywood Studios on their vacation, completely excited to ride Rise of the Resistance only to get a really high boarding group number that doesn't get called by park closing, or they don't get one at all. Imagine spending all that money to experience a new Disney attraction and NOT get to experience it. Of course, Disney is all about helping with that disappointment their system gave you in the first place by forcing you to pay more to actually get on the attraction. Back in 2019 I almost booked a Disney vacation because I wanted to experience Rise of the Resistance, but I heard too many reports of people not getting on it their whole vacation, so I abandoned my plans. Now I hear they've adopted the same stupid system for the new Ratatouille ride??

The only IP franchise you might encounter at Six Flags (at least in Texas, I don't know about other states) is Looney Toons. But even that is not outrageously saturated like in the Disney parks. Toddlers will run into Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Yosemite Sam but the parks aren't shoving them in your faces loudly like the Disney parks do in this video. They take it easy, just a nice addition to their parks so you can have some extra fun. That's how IP should be integrated. Now the issue with Universal is their contract with JK Rowling was hashed out over two days in a hotel conference room. Parents were probably bitterly disappointed that they couldn't get their kids' pictures taken with "Harry," "Ron" and "Hermione." That was in Rowling's grand plan for Diagon Alley. She said it felt tacky to have lookalikes wandering the parks. She wanted guests to experience the magic of the lands from Wizarding Britain. It could then be supplemented with add-ons like a Honeydukes candy shop and serving actual butterbeer in the parks. Having been to the Wizarding World of HP, I can see what she wanted to achieve. The idea was to have you use your imagination as you wander through a living, breathing replica of Diagon Alley. One other interesting thing: Universal fought with Rowling multiple times on how DA was to be built. They were shocked that she wanted the entrance hidden and visitors would have to walk around a fake brick wall. Rowling calmly pointed out that this is to segue the transformation from the muggle world (our world) to Harry's world: Wizarding Britain. It makes for a pleasant welcoming and then the guests enter DA. Universal also argued over the size, they wanted it to be a vast, open space. Rowling said this wouldn't work and told them to bring the buildings closer together. It would add to the feel of a bustling small town and visitors would feel like they were walking in Harry's footsteps. This would also meet another of her demands: bringing 60 ft tall structures this close cuts off views of the rest of Universal from DA. Example: I walked up the stairs next to Gringotts Bank. From the very top, there was a row of shops to the left and Fortescue's ice cream parlor to the right with the entryway in between. Everything blocked my view. I could not see outside the physical walls of DA They achieved the golden rule: immersive experiences. I say they succeeded. The guests were always running here and there, taking pictures of the dragon, buying gilly water, casting spells with interactive wands (whoever came up with that is a frakkin' genius) and enjoying shows (I saw the Tale of the three brothers, as depicted in "The deathly hallows." It drew a pretty big crowd). At no point did I feel like I was being squashed to death. I looked at the reactions of the very young guests. They were holding onto their parents closely but there was excitement and fun in their eyes. They loved it as much as I did. The busy, bustling world of Wizarding Britain was replicated in real life and they succeeded. If someone wanted to escape this, they could duck into one of many shops lining the streets. I would love to go back again some day. Spent four days at Universal on my last vacation and it was as magical as a day at Disney (if we're talking about WDW in 2009! 😁).

I went to the parks like a week ago and I think Universal is doing great with giving a good experience to the public, as a grew up I stopped feeling as excited going to Disney as I used to, there's nothing to do at Magic Kingdom (besides like, two decent rides) and the quality of the park decreased a LOT, the show at the end was good but the amount of people was overwhelming so I couldn't really enjoy it. the virtual lines and fast pass (I don't remember how they were called) were so bad, and the system of only purchasing 1 fast pass per hour I think was kinda discouraging. At universal we didn't even need to purchase any fast passes, the lines were going smooth and it was enjoyable. Other thing I realized was that the workers at disney didn't seem to enjoy anything, as how I remembered, the workers were happy and even started conversations with you. I thought this was because I was not a kid and they rather act nice with families with children, But still it bumped me up. At universal everyone was really nice and the workers at Harry Potter even did conversation with me about my clothes (was wearing a Slytherin jacket). the games are far more interesting and I actually enjoyed it a lot. I feel a little bit sad about Disney, for it is such a magical place and its a big legacy of amazing movies. with the new Star Wars game I think they did an amazing job, the ambientation was amazing and the workers were great. I think pandora and Star Wars are games worth experiencing but as a whole, Disney kinda felt, flat. (Sorry if my grammar is not that great, English is not my first language)

Considering the mass exodus of imagineers due to Chapek’s decision to get rid of imagineers as the first item on the list of COVID cost cutting. Many of them were picked up by universal for EPIC universe and from what I’m seeing, they enjoy it. Your videos are very perceptive btw, as a Disney fan, the attention to detail and proper storytelling is really what brings people back, if they lose sight of it as universal gains it, this will be detrimental to their future. My only problem with universal in the past was how they never seemed to go all out. Always stopping at 85% detail wise. However, I think HP being the exception, they have begun to learn from their success and I think what you said about them listening to guests who are over the simulation rides is spot on. If these last couple of rides, Hagrids and Velocicoaster are any indicator of future work on EPIC, universal is going to be killing it. My opinion has always been that the entire side north of the lake in universal studios Florida should be taken down and used for new projects. Everything from the ET, Simpsons, Men in Black side

The last time I remember genuinely LOVING a new attraction was Expedition Everest in 2006. Ive been excited about countless Disney projects since then but they ALWAYS fall flat and I can never put my finger on why. What always happens is that a few months after experiencing a new ride or attraction I realize that the only reason I liked it was because it was new. I don’t feel a particular need to visit it again. I realize that nothing about the experience stood out or felt special or felt like DISNEY. It was just exciting because it was new and in Disney. You hit the nail on the head w this series. I’m 23 and have been going to the parks every year since I was 2. As a kid, we used to spend our yearly vacation evenly amongst the parks. But as the youngest, once I got out of the "childhood wonder" phase provided by Disney my family almost exclusively spent our vacation at Universal for the better quality rides/experience. The only exception was one day for Epcot or the occasional other park if a new Disney ride opened up. Recently, after years of no vacation, I returned to Disney parks for a celebration and completely understand the frustration more diehard Disney fans must be having with the parks" decline.

Man this 2 part video hits the nail on the head. We just returned from Orlando. We stayed off resort but man it really felt like Disney was just trying to nickle and dime us for everything. And Genie hadn’t even debuted yet. Unfortunately they got rid of the old fast pass system already so every standby line was ridiculously long. We missed out on a lot of rides, even with using my wife’s DAS. With the old system plus my wife’s DAS, we would be able to ride everything we wanted plus some rides multiple times. It seems to me Disney is purposefully making the standby lines as painful as possible so everyone upgrades to genie+. Our DAS was our only saving grace while we were at the parks. As far as the rides attractions go, I couldn’t agree more. The Frozen ride was a huge disappointment. Barely worth the DAS wait, let alone the standby wait. I remember when it first opened, people were waiting 3-4 hours to ride. I’d be pissed off if I wanted that long, and that was the ride I got. Rise of the Resistance was also a disappointment. Just okay, but not as good as it was hyped up to be. I completely agree with you that they need to significantly ramp up the number of attractions. It’s pretty dumb in my opinion to spend all that money on a themed “land” and then only have two attractions in that area. I guess, if you think about it, pretty much all of their themed areas, only have 2-3 attractions. Also, don’t be surprised if Disney eventually requires a stay at a Disney resort to visit their parks. My mother-in-law works for Hilton and the hotel management told her while we down there, this was the rumor going around. We’ve been 4 times over the last 4 years, and this was by far the worst experience. We prob won’t be back to Disney anytime soon.

We just went to Magic Kingdom and Epcot in late August. (You're talking to a mid-level Florida park-attendee--used to go if not every year, then often enough I knew the parks as well as my home town.) I was very disappointed and heart-broken. MK was pretty open as far as rides and shows went, but to see some of the classics in such shabby stat e compared to years past almost made me cry (thinking specifically of Small World, where a lot of the dolls were gone, not working, etc., and don't even get me started on some of the "replacement" dolls). And I remember when Little Mermaid opened, waiting for 45 mins to ride and then saying "that was it?" It was okay, but it was more like something at Six Flags, not Disney. Rode it again, same experience - including stopping often throughout the ride and having the annoying message play repeatedly (breaking down?). Overall, though, it wasn't bad. Where I really felt let down was Epcot. We paid full price for a park that was only half open. But hey, they had Food & Wine Fest. (insert rolling eyes) The highlight of the day was Frozen Ever After, but even some of that felt artificial (vs. immersive) as it used a lot of screens and projections (the creepiest were Anna and Elsa's faces projected on moving animatronics). I hated to see my beloved World Showcase reduced to this. Not to mention all the construction and the walls. It just felt cheap. I wish we'd gone to Universal instead. I loved Universal Hollywood when I went last time. All of this reminds me of Sam Walton and Walmart. He said when he was gone and the lawyers and accountants got ahold of the store/company, that it would never be the same. I feel this is what happened with Disney. Walt had his faults, but he did care about the customer experience and families enjoying their visits and feeling immersed in his world. He would be so displeased.

I've noticed a pretty dramatic decrease in maintenance standards over the last few years. Even recently, I went through the Living Seas and found half the effects not working. The projection tunnel had a large gap where the projector was out, which is blatantly poor show. I know it's aging and not a huge draw, but very little on Journey Into Imagination feels kept up with either. Even over the last year, I've seen dramatic decline in animatronic animation from that attraction due to the lack of upkeep. You've provided a lot of good examples as well. If Disney is the industry leader, shouldn't we expect working attractions? I know that animatronic maintenance is expensive and difficult, but that commitment to a more ambitious experience is what allowed Disney to come so far.

@@PoseidonEntertainment It is worse than that. The truth is, Disney does not pay its employees near what they are worth so they don't do the job with any pride. Who would? Read up on Abigail Disney, Roy Disney's granddaughter (people often forget that Roy was the other half of the company with Walt.) SHE IS NOT HAPPY. She's said herself this is not what they would have wanted. They could be bloody ruthless, but they had a limit. Otherwise, think about it: The signs have been there for a while. The Wonders of Life Pavilion, in my opinion, is a missed opportunity. They shut that thing down a while ago. Imagine a ride that is a variant on a drop tower, but it is a DNA helix. It is right outside. Imagine taking pressure at last off the Garden Grill at the Land and giving a nice, comfy place to eat that is quiet and does not smell funny. (They could even offer dishes designed as healthy, but tasty: I vote for puffed quinoa, which actually doesn't taste half bad and is kind of nutty tasting....) But noooo, it is eventually going to be demolished rather than fixed. I used to ride Body Wars as a kid. There is no reason they couldn't have put in a different kind of thrill ride in between the closure of Body Wars and now. Man oh man, talk about lack of ideas. It used to be the inverse problem with Disney: too many cooks spoiling the broth in the creative department. Now it is corporatists who went to Wharton and were born with briefcases in their hands and are more attracted to the Fortune 500 status of Disney than taking a hard look at its foundations and realizing you destabilize that, you are begging for trouble. BONUS: Another cool ride idea would actually have been to EXPLAIN the circle of life. Yeah, yeah, I know a lot of people are not fans of adding film characters to EPCOT, but in this case, Timon and Pumbaa would be a GOOD thing. They could explain ecosystems and ecology, both of which are subsets of BIOLOGY. What Wonders of Life was originally built for. A trip through their world and other biomes could be a nice, long ride showing how it all connects together. Ernie Sabella and Nathan Lane are no spring chickens, but I think they could be persuaded to come back one last time to do the voices....and maybe be impressed with animatronics that no longer need to be rooted in place, since BOSTON DYNAMICS has bots that have a HUGER range of motion and with a little work can look very very lifelike!! OTHER: If there is one thing that gets me a little ticked off, it is that anything before 1967 gets more priority than the stuff from when I was a child. It has only been recently that Disney even made rides for the Little Mermaid and a few others. And they are not the same quality as, say, Dumbo: something my grandparents built for my parents when they were kids. I want my nieces to be able to see Coco and more Pixar stuff. I would want to do what my grandparents did for their kids. Down with the half assery!! Down with the overly compensated execs!!

I am just glad my kids got to experience Disney prior to all the shutdowns. We are now Universal Passholders and will be going there several times over the next year. We don't stay on site though because of the parking fee. We live close enough to drive and can park at the theme parks for free with our annual passes. It's much cheaper to stay off site at a place that doesn't charge a parking fee and go at less busy times of the year.

Great constructive criticism! You have captured my thoughts, and probably the thoughts of many, in this video and your last. After all the recent changes at Disney and disappointing new attractions, I’m definitely more inclined to choose Universal when planning my next theme park visit. I hate the lack of spontaneity, lack of new ideas/ attractions and sense of competition/ scarcity that Disney is choosing over the amazing place it used to be.

Especially because I've come from Disneyland, I can attest that just because WDW has more parks, it doesn't mean there's more to do. Disneyland's 2 parks pack equal or more to do than WDW's 4 parks combined. And I would also rather go to Universal than WDW if I were to visit Florida

I definitely agree. I think that every WDW park should be packed with attractions in the same way Disneyland is.

I got hired like half a year before the shut downs at the "better park." I still work there now. Probably the best decision I ever made, given what happened... and I had a choice between the two... and watching how one has changed over the 30 years I've lived in Florida and gone to them both multiple times growing up... I know I made the right one. 😁 Intersting video, and I whole heartedly agree. ❤

Interesting video, you make a lot of good points. When Disney whiffed on Star Wars Land, for me that really broke the illusion that they were the king of theme park design. I mean, they pretty much had the perfect source material to create a theme park land (or even an entire park), and they couldn't get it right. I do think Rise of the Resistance is a great, Disney-worthy attraction (with the disclaimer that I haven't seen it in person yet so I'm basing that on videos), but that's not enough for a whole land. Plus, for anyone who knows anything about Universal, it was clear they were desperately copying Harry Potter (e.g., they saw the wand experience at Universal and said "let's do that, but with light sabers!") I agree that it comes down to losing sight of the guest experience. They seem to be getting lost in the concepts of their attractions and what will sound good in a press release or boardroom presentation, rather than what will excite and delight guests on the ground. I do hope they can find their way again!

I’m a Florida resident & have visited WDW well over a dozen times for extended, family, vacations. I’ve also visited countless times for just a day. I was a die-hard Disney fanatic throughout my 40+ years! My first visit was in 1978, at age 3, so it’s extremely nostalgic for me. The last time I visited was about 5 years ago with our 3 teenagers. (18, 16, & 14 at the time) That was probably our last Disney vacation with our kids (they are 19, 21 & 24 now) The cost is too high. Disney has priced me out. My husband is also miserable at Disney. he hates the crowds and the pricetag, but He greatly enjoys Universal because he can actually enjoy a vacation. We enjoy staying at the top tier Universal resorts. I’m hoping my husband & I can splurge and go to Disney for my 50th birthday (in 4 years) But, honestly, if things don’t get better, I’d rather visit Spain or Italy for nearly the same amount.

Went to the DLR this summer and had a great time with my son. However, paying the same prices to get in as pre pandemic times and given less just made me feel like I was taken advantage of. I don't planning on going back for some time.

I really hate that I’ve waited all this time for my children to be old enough to enjoy everything in Disney and now that they’re older it’s just become a money pit that seems to have no payoff. Between the lines and prices I just don’t see my children having the same experience I did but when I consider Universal I see my children being just as overjoyed but possibly way more than I was. I really hate to say it but that Disney trip I’ve been saving for and planning all this time is probably gonna go to Universal :/ They love all things Disney and so do I but I just can’t risk sinking all that money just for us to end up not having as much fun as I know we could elsewhere.

I'm more a Disney fan but the wife is more universal. That, however does not mean we each don't like or visit both parks as locals. The best thing that could happen is for Universal to start taking the crown to shock Disney into a better game plan. This in turn makes Universal better which allows me to have a better experience at both parks. This was a great video and spot on. I'd like to see your total analysis of what it will take by Universal to make a customer vacation with a say, split stay in a 14 day period(or even more days in that period towards Universal).

It's really sickening how they are cutting the Magical Express. I used to believe that Disney would take care of their guests...and they should, considering what they charge. It was nice to arrive at the airport, and know that Disney would take care of my family, that we would arrive safe and without hassle to the hotel and back to the airport. Obviously, they no longer care about that.

One of the things I enjoy about Disneyland/DCA, is I can stay at JW Marriott or W hotels (at half the price and with better service) and walk into the parks. I love the Grand Californian, but it's not a must. But this is the exact reason Disney seems to be in a perpetual war with the city of Anaheim; they want to recreate the DisneyWorld bubble, and want the city to shaft all the other local business to do it.

I just stayed at the Grand Californian and I'm sorry but I thought it was a bit gross. The carpets and bathroom floors seemed extremely unclean. Beds and sheets were nice but I was skeeved out. There was no magic. No service that stood out to me. Just churn n burn. And good luck eating anywhere in the hotel except the $10 sugar cookie at the 3pm treat cart. Literally could not get a reservation 60 days prior nor quick service in their GHC corner on the first floor during our stay.

I've been planning a Disneyland trip for my kids, and I've been agonizing over whether being on park is worht it for my kids. I've decided against it, simply because a week in the grand california (the only hotel that seems remotely modern) is well over 3,000. I'm a hilton diamond, and can stay in a suite for the same amount of time for under a thousand, and then let my kids buy whatever the hell they want every day and still save. Couple that with there being no benefits to staying on park any more and most of the hotels near the gate being closer than the on park hotels make it a no brainer.

Both these vids were so interesting! Thanks for sharing your perspective and putting words to the way I’ve been feeling these last few years. I’m a lifelong Disney fan and grew up at the California parks and it’s been difficult for me to say, “You know, I don’t really think I care about replacing my AP w/ a Magic Key…” Especially with 4 kids I can easily take other places they would enjoy and engage with more.

I appreciate the feedback. I agree, in that many of the changes have bothered me over the last few years but I wasn't quite sure how to articulate it until I started producing these videos. I think it's a larger issue among the many people who have nothing but positivity for this company, attempting to gather as much free merchandise and media access as they can get. Despite this, I think there's very much a group of people out there who also continue to find the changes being made to the parks distasteful or even out-right off-putting, but it's not as easy as just saying "well this is bad" because there are so many factors that go into it.
