Consider this an extremely late 'follow-up' to my original Fall of Doctor Who video ( • The Fall of Doctor Who ) - except I mainly focus on the first two episodes of Ncuti Gatwa's first series and how I never expected things to stoop so low....

I really really liked Jinx in the show. I think her overacting was just another part of the character and I didn't mind it (though I understand if others don't like the amount of 'scenery chewing'). What put the episode in the bin for me was the writing..... In the end, for me, it was good acting, good charactization but .... not a lot for those actors to actually use

That's fair enough. My primary focus is the writing but Jinx just was a bit too much for me. They were giving it their all, I can't deny that. Characterisation of the Doctor and Ruby is a bit thin to me. (I have watched 73 Yards and even at that, beyond abandonment issues, there's not much on the script page to flesh out Ruby in my opinion)

I wasn't keen on Space Babies but I've enjoyed the stories that followed. I thought Monsoon was great as Maestro and loved the creepy vibe of 73 Yards. It's hard to know how to judge the fan response because so many went in determined to hate it. RTD returning caused a backlash, Gatwa being cast caused some incredibly toxic backlash as did the announcement that Monsoon would be in it and that was long before series actually aired. People even complained about the wheelchair ramp on the TARDIS ffs. There's so much hate rising in the world right now, particularly against anything pertaining to the black and LGBTQ communities from actual legislation to stop kids being told gays exist to the ridiculous and baseless scare about CRT being taught in schools. You can't help but wonder if the negative response to a gay, black Doctor is part of the same thing. I'm not saying there aren't real reasons to be critical of it but it seems way higher than Chibnall's era and I'd say the new series has definitely improved on that. Also when people start slamming something as woke you have to wonder what they mean because what the word actually means is a positive thing. It's hard not to think of Fox News, The Daily Wire or people like Ron Desantis when people start complaining about representation. Not that this video was particularly like that but in reference to how some fans have responded to the series which was mentioned towards the end.

For what it's worth, I did enjoy elements of the succeeding episodes, but I can't deny that there isn't convoluted writing to some degree in each episode. For example, I enjoyed the chemistry between the Doctor and Rogue in his eponymous episode, but the mechanics of the 'Triform prison device' were completely thrown out the window by the end. You'll be happy to know that I do not follow in the footsteps of Fox News or The Daily Wire. If anything, I consider Ben Shapiro to be a bit of a clown. I avoid using the word 'woke' nowadays myself for the same reason, it has been so over-saturated and malformed in common parlance that it differs in definition from person to person. That being said, I have become cynical of media outlets and movie/TV show authorities lambasting their audience in brush strokes regardless of the gravity of their critique. It seems pavlovian at this point. I would argue that they are stoking the flames, leading to more backlash. That is not to dismiss some of the more extreme examples of fan backlash (i.e. sending hateful messages to cast and crew) but it seems to be a given these days that people with minor critiques of a piece of media will be lumped in with the crazies, branded 'racist', 'sexist', 'homophobic' et al.

Have to agree. I really disliked the Jodie years (not because of her, if anything, her take on the Doctor was the only thing working) but this season has ranged from fine to great. Not perfect but a huge return to form (for 2005 reboot fans anyway). I'm all for criticism but I do think the way some people have been complaining about this season, it's as if they've convinced themselves that Doctor Who is some macho Indiana Jones meets Star Trek sci-fi advenutre. There's always been a camp, silly, heavy-handed element to the show. The main villain has a plunger for an arm for crying out loud. I'm convinced if characters like Lady Cassandra, Captain Jack and the Adipose were introduced this year, the same people would be saying the show is a disgrace.

Personally, I think this is the best the show has been in many years. Maestro was a great, original villain. The new season has been brimming with great ideas - Dot & Bubble, 73 yards, Legend of Ruby Sunday have all been top notch episodes. It's like night and day compared to the Chibnall era

Great video. I am the target audience for this most recent episode. I nearly cried with joy when i saw jynx was going to be in dr who. I make music and ive been watching the dr for 30+ years. I didnt even make it to the end. As soon as he said "now for the twist" and started randomly singing i turned it off. I nearly turned it off mid way through when the Dr was staring of into the sky monologuing awkwardly about how they were doomed. He stopped talking, kept staring into the sky and the clip just hung there. Wtf was going on

It feels like some creative genius has written out an amazing overarching storyline then handed it off to the most incompetent buffoons to fill in the gaps. The Doctor is the last Time Lord as far as we know, which may exclude Susan and others who escaped Gallifrey, but we're not really sure. Also, the Doctor isn't really a Time Lord but a foundling from somewhere unknown so he really isn't the last Time Lord. The Doctor has a real name, which isn't so secret anymore and it's an adopted name anyhow, not a birth name. The Doctor is scared of monsters and Gods, but is likely immortal given the Doctor has been killed countless times (not that this seems to have traumatised him/her). Let's face it, canon is completely ruined, and this series is just ridiculous now - a pathetic parody of itself. Perhaps this is why TV shows shouldn't last for 60 years. 😞 Thanks for the review.

With respect, this seems like an incredibly arbitrary barrier for critique. Would it work the same way, say if a show had some stellar first few episodes at the start of a season, and let's say the following episodes in the season took a nosedive; should a content creator or person in general be discouraged in giving their initial thoughts? Personally I haven't watched X-Men '97, so I have nothing to comment on that, but whether you like it or not, people are going to have their opinions one way or the other.

Knowing exactly what happened is not necessary and I suspect there are still pay-offs to come in later episodes. I've watched DW for 50 years, I know what 'worst' episodes look like and we are a very long way away from that.

When I first heard Ncuti was going to be playing the Dr I thought to myself O I liked him in the series sex education this could be really fun, How wrong was I. But It's not his acting skills its the fault of Russell's storylines they are Sh$$. As the target audience is families with young children I kinda stick by what I say there is no need for stupid pronoun correcting etc in a family show, let children be children and watch a good sci fi adventure with no grown up themes of any description weather straight, gay, trans, alien.
