In the heart of the autumn woods, there stood a stone arch, ancient and forgotten by time. Its weathered stones were moss-covered, and its structure seemed out of place, as if it had been plucked from another world and dropped here, in the center of the forest. The wind whistled through the trees, sending leaves swirling around the arch like they were drawn to it by an unseen force.
At night, when the forest grew still and the air became cool, the arch glowed faintly, a dim amber light emanating from the stones. It was said that no one who passed through the arch at dusk could ever find their way back. The paths would twist and change, the once familiar woods transforming into something else entirely-deeper, darker, filled with strange sounds, like the low hum of creatures that had never known the light of day.
Those who approached would often hear faint whispers carried on the wind, though no voice could be found. The wind wasn’t alone in its song either-the sound of soft, padded footsteps echoed just beyond sight, and sometimes a haunting call like a wolf’s howl, but not quite right, reverberated through the trees. Some swore the trees themselves moved closer when the wind stirred, leaning in as if to listen to the fire that often flickered just beyond the arch.
The fire, though small, never went out. No matter the weather, it burned, casting a flickering light on the stones of the arch. Sometimes, people said, they saw figures beyond the flames, shadowy beings that danced just out of reach. They weren’t human, but they weren’t beasts either-more like spirits or memories long forgotten, tied to the ancient stones and the forest around them.
If you ever found yourself in the autumn woods as the light faded, you might be drawn toward the glow of the arch. But once there, you’d feel it-that pull, as though the arch was beckoning you to step through. And should you choose to cross, the world behind you would fade, the trees would shift, and the whispers would grow louder.
And maybe, just maybe, the arch would take you to a place where the woods never end, and time itself stands still. But be warned-the creatures there don’t take kindly to visitors.
So if you ever find yourself wandering too close, remember: some paths, once taken, can never be retraced.
