About 45,000 Nigerian soldiers served in WW2. Many served in India and Burma (Myanmar) fighting alongside British, Indian, Ghurka and other Africans against the Japanese. This was often fighting in thick jungle at close quarters. More than 800 African soldiers died, more than 3,000 were wounded in this fighting. All of them were volunteers and they will not be forgotten.

@@armchairgeneralissimo I can tell you a little about your grandfather's war. The 81st arrived in India in August 1943. One brigade, all Nigerian soldiers, were part of the Chindits and fought in northern Burma. The other two brigades fought in the Arakan campaign, mostly in the valley of the Kaladan river. By January 1945 they had driven the Japanese out and captured two towns from them. The terrain was so rough that everything had to be carried by porters or pack mules. In April 1945 the entire division was withdrawn to India and saw no more fighting before the war ended in August 1945.

The concentration camps were a combination of forced labor camps, human experimentation sites, and internment/torture sites. Those providing the forced labor assembled weapons and other items for war for the Germans, including providing their own hair as raw materials to make uniforms (yes, some Nazi uniforms were made of human hair). However the more terrifying part of these camps was the scientific human experimentation. Much of what we know about communicable disease, sterile medical environments, organ transplants, and the absolute extremes which people can survive come from the Nazi concentration camps and Japanese Unit 731. I will not describe the experiments in detail here because the cruelty and depravity are unimagineable, and it's clear that the experimenters had to delude themselves that their subjects were not human in order to perform these experiments - this is also why there's a lot of focus on rhetoric whenever it dehumanizes certain groups - anyone who buys into that rhetoric may perpetrate such unimaginable evils on others. and just as an aside, most people are aware that the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare (so far) were deployed against the Japanese by the Americans, however most people are NOT aware, that 6 years prior Japan had been the first nation in WWII to use Weapons of Mass Destruction, in the form of biological weapons. Those weaponized plagues were developed by unit 731 and deployed against the Chinese population successfully, and unsuccessfully sent to the United States (the hot air balloons they used to deliver the samples fell over unpopulated forests and were not discovered until much later in the war, with the pathogens being mostly dead by then.).
@yomama6295 ай бұрын
The biggest concentration camps were extermination camps, where people were immediately sent to the gas chambers upon arrival after the Final Solution was decreed. The Einsatzgruppen were first used to kill Jews and other ethnic groups that the Nazis viewed as undesirables but the mental toll of executing innocent civilians on those German troops led Nazi leadership to invent gas chambers instead to make this process far more efficient and less personal for the troops carrying out the orders

It's a rough figure and it can be debated, but the average death toll in traffic since 1925, some 100 years ago, has been one million per year. Figure that out. Nobody seems to think about that when they take part in traffic. And if they think about it, all they can think of to solve the problem, is to build a shell around each and every participant in traffic. Use 1.5 tonnes of steel or use a helmet.

The picture is worse than this. Greek-Turkish war in Cyprus." Prague "spring" 1968, Romanian revolution 1989-90, Yugoslav war 1991-1995, bombing of Serbia 1999, Kosovo 2008. And now the Russian-Ukrainian war. Although there was not as big a clash as in the World War, the number of dead is close to 1 million in all in conflict.

I’m a bit late to the show, but a lot of your top comments have people (possibly either Russian or pretending to be Russian) insulting your top commenters and being racist towards the Polish and others. You need to crack down on this and remove all prejudice comments. Otherwise, you’ll only provide a safe space for racism in your audience

Keep in mind the losses analogically of the size of the population of the country. For example 1/3 of Greek men died similarly to other countries with a small sized population. Another thing in videos about WW2 it is that they never explain all the small countries significance and they go over it with a name reference and it's sad to do this and not give people the space for their history to be valid at least with one sentence. (i do not in every way, type, or form say in this comment that the other losses were not significant or important and tragic, i explain just one other fact about small countries just that)

Many Polish POWs in Russia after Germany invaded were released. They traveled to join the British in North Africa picking up an orphaned bear cub along the way. They fought in North Africa and Italy. Polish pilots were ordered to escape and the fought both in France and in the Battle of Britain. RAF squadrons 302 and 303.

Soviet got a pyrrhic victory. No one except some delusional terrorists will attack Germany again. My grandfather was in the Royal Navy WW1-2, not in a commanding position but working with engines and stuff on different ships. His father was in France. Mother side RAF. My Swedish grandfather + mother live out of reach. I know that he favored the Germans because they stood on Finlands side, were we have relatives aplenty. Grandmother refused to marry grandfather after hearing about the war from 2 grandfather. I was horrific.

We can acknowledge the heroism of those that fought for the USSR and also shame their leaders for their inhumanity. If you’re a Russian, I believe that you deserve a better life than what Putin is offering. Russians and Ukrainians were brothers throughout history (going back to the Kievan Rus) but your current leaders and Soviet history has perverted and taken advantage of that. Likewise, not all Russians should be blamed for the crimes of their nation. Just like any nation, leadership is mostly to blame, even if the population itself shares a small part for cooperating. Both sides need respect and the aggressor needs to be stopped. All nations deserve their own choice. Russia does not determine the future of Ukraine. NATO does not deserve the future of Ukraine. Recognise nuance

TO be clear. We germans are happy, that this war was lost. But the fact is: Without the War on the western Side of Europe, against US, UK, Canada, France etc etc, Germany won this war against Soviet Union. So be grateful to your allies.
@ussenterprise53032 ай бұрын
@@franzmann666franz5 No, this is american propaganda . Russians could defeat Germany on their own From the very beginning of the war on the eastern front until its very end, Germany deployed more than half of all armed forces against the USSR, and significant German forces were also located in the occupied countries. It is also worth remembering that a lot of assistance from the USSR was provided already in 1943, when the Red Army on its own had already inflicted several major defeats on the Wehrmacht. On the Western Front, only a small part of the entire Wehrmacht fought against the Allied forces. It is also worth remembering that even at the end of 1944 - beginning of 1945, when the war was essentially lost, Germany was still able to defeat the combined forces of UK and the US in the Ardennes operation.

400,000 deaths and more wounded and disabled. By 1945 Americans were war weary and still facing the prospect of a million more deaths if we invaded Japan. The post war generations have no concept of what that feels like. They often are arrogant in their moralistic contempt for those who made the decision to drop the bombs.

You have no clue what you’re talking about. Your entire justification for Hiroshima and Nagasaki is based on lies. The nuclear attacks were really aimed against the USSR, to instill fear in the Soviets to not go any further. Hiroshima and Nagasaki was basically the start of the Cold War. You are morally bankrupt.

It is said that on the Eastern front, both sides gave no quarter and expected none in return. The Axis and Soviet forces fought each other with demonic fury, and unfortunately civilians were caught in between, in a brutal and desperate struggle where there was no such thing as an innocent bystander.
