1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in NY. THAT GUITAR GOT KNOCKED OVER. I was there!! YES did a show "In the Round". People were throwing frisbees and beach balls around. Before the show, a frisbee hit THAT LES PAUL and knocked it off the stand. A Roadie came up through a trap door in the floor, picked up the guitar, gave a dirty look to the crowd, and took it back under the stage with him. It was back onstage in 10 minutes. I can see it happen in my head as plain as day.

theres a good ending to your story right, ? please tell me that the crowd turned on the frizbee thrower and burnt him at the stake right there as a humble sacrifice of appeasement to the rock gods, please tell me that happened, i cant sleep at nights now, knowing that satan almost killed a symbol of holiness with a freakin frizbee and just walked away unharmed smiling and smirking, oh the visions of horror i now suffer.

Do it. I had all these guitars from different manufacturers under the guise of "covering all possible tones." I'm not a professional musician or anything, I do open mics with my buddies and gig maybe once a month if someone I know needs a last minute fill in. I didn't need 10 guitars for that lol. I ended up selling most and buying my dream guitar, a Gretsch Country Gentleman, when Guitar Center had a sale where they were $2000 instead of the $3000 that they are elsewhere. I have that for my home playing, a MIM Jazzmaster that I've beaten up in all the right ways for when I play live, an acoustic, and a bass now. Couldn't be happier and I like to think that the guitars I've sold that had been collecting dust are being enjoyed more than they were.

About the action, you feel like 14's with 10's; on my '77 L6-S, also with a "harmonica", when you raise up the stopbar / tailpiece, it changes a lot, the bendings becomes much more comfortable (I play 10's too). Try it !

I had worked for Micky Tait (from Tait Towers) from 1979 to 1984ish part time to help with the Yes and Asia shows lighting and stage. As a result Steve and I became friends and I would call him at home to check in with him in-between tours. You said how well Steve took care of guitars and it reminded me of a story he told me in a phone conversation before the GTR tour. One day Steve got a call from Paul McCartney and he asked him to come to his office to talk to him. Steve went to Paul's office and was amazed how truly nice Paul was to him. Paul wanted Steve to play in one of the Prince's Trust Concerts. Steve asked who else was going to be there. Paul ran down the list and it included Pete Townshend. Well Steve said he had to think about it. Now know that any Beatle is looked at like a god from anyone who had made it in the Rock business, but Steve turned him down! WHY? Because he would not be on the same stage as Pete, because he used to smash guitars. According to Steve as many second SG's were made by Gibson, they would ship them to Pete to smash on stage and no one that truly resects the guitar would do that according to Steve. Thought you might get a kick out of that true story. Best Always and in ALL WAYS, Chris Zinn

Austin, tip to save on shipping tape and it actually works better! I swirl Titebond glue (plain old Elmer's works too) on the box end flaps then use less than half the tape as usual to seal it closed. The glue sets really fast & actually secures the box better than tape alone. I've been doing this for years, never had a failure and saved a ton on tape.

I have seen Yes more than 20 times, and Steve Howe had the shiniest guitars of all the players I have seen in my life on stage. He probably used car wax for those guitar to keep their colors like that. In those days there was no UV protector in waxes, but maybe without knowing it there was in the wax he was using. Him and Squire are both in my top list. Btw you brought tears in my eyes with those Yes and Asia riffs. Great review.

It's an eye opener for me, a guitarist from New Zealand, to see a review on such an iconic Les Paul. A beautiful Guitar indead. But one thing I have to say is that all guitars were ment to be played as Steve Howe did his. It's a shame that some of then end up in glass cases in some rich collectors den just to look at & never played. Me, I have a budget Les Paul copy with all the correct woods, that I have hot rodded to get that vintage L P tone. Hay but I did thourely enjoy your review. Cheers

So at the end, you said you had a great time being that guitar's care taker for a while. That got me thinking, what's involved in long term care for vintage guitars that aren't regularly played, like collector's pieces such as that? I'd imagine typical stuff like occasionally oiling the fretboard, etc... do you periodically turn the truss rod to keep it free or anything like that? Might make an interesting video. Beautiful guitar though, I'll miss seeing it around here now and then!

Finding a guitar like this is certainly special, but I'd love to meet one of the luthiers who worked on them. I'm sure there's a few still around. I'm a carpenter, but I don't do fancy in-lay work, (but sometimes I get to watch the hardwood floor guys do inlays,) so I'd love to chat with an old luthier who did this type of binding work, back in the day when there was no such thing as a CNC machine. They'd probably be pushing 80.

Good episode. I love Steve Howe. Robert Baker is awesome! He's a great teacher, has tons of great information, and he rocks out in every video.

I remember seeing that guitar in1979 or 1980 delivering anvil cases to them. Steve put 6 to 8 (can't remember the exact number) guitars in factory cases into a large anvil case when they toured. Nice to see it's still in good condition.

So good! I saw Yes live in ‘82. Sadly, that was after Steve Howe’s tenure. One of the great rock bands. And what a beautiful Les Paul. 👍

I would have loved to have been one of the fortunate ones that you used this guitar as a conversation piece on. Steve Howe is on of my favourite guitarists. Clap and mood for a day are a pair of musical masterpieces i wish i could learn. Growing up they were friends of the neighbors of my uncles in bainbridge ny and before i knew who yes was i got to listen to them just jaming and having a good time while we were having a family get together

You were highlighting the flaming on the neck and it reminded me of a youtuber guns and guitars, he came up with a way to add flaming and other features to a regular neck that looks awesome! I'm not as expert so it looks real to me.

This is one of the by far most good looking guitar I’ve seen. If I had the money I’ll differently purchase one just like that. One of my dream guitars is the mark termonti private stock.

Had a 1978 Les Paul Custom. It had a natural finish top (blonde), but didn't have the fancy flamed top. Had the gold plated hardware and the harmonica bridge. I liked the adjustability of the bridge. The guitar sounded great. It had a thin neck and was super easy to play. Some might have said, that it was a bit heavy, but of course, it had sustain for miles, and I have a strong build, so I could stand and play it without getting tired. Played it through my 1975 Fender Twin Reverb with an Altec speaker upgrade. Sounded great. Sadly the next generation in my family isn't so into music, so I sold it to a teenager, who played in a Rock/Jazz group at his church. He had to borrow half the money from his bass player, but I was happy, that someone, who really wanted and appreciated it got it. I even went to their church to listen to them perform, which made me even happier, because he could really play, where a crowd could enjoy it too. Sold my Twin Reverb to another teenager who also came to look at it with his bass player. As soon as they heard it, their eyes lit up, so I knew, that they could hear the difference in having the Altecs. I can't quite remember the model #, but they were from around 1978 and were a fairly common upgrade. I didn't own it then, but a keyboardist was using it with his Rhodes piano at the time of the upgrade. We just can't always predict what our kids, nieces, and nephew's will be into, but it doesn't hurt to save a few heirlooms for them, but if we determine, that they just aren't interested, sometimes you have to wait 'till their out of school, it's not a bad thing to sell the stuff off to someone, whom you know will appreciate them!

That is such a 70's guitar!!! The rosewood details was a very 70's thing. Les Paul customs were over a thousand in Los Angeles in the 1978-79, I remember the rich kids in junior high got their parents to buy them. I wonder if they still have them?

Wow! That was special! Not sure how(e) you were able to let that one go, but good on ya....can't wait to see what you are going to get as a replacement. As far as collectables go, I just don't understand the need for some collectors to insist on pristine examples of old guitars. To me, the real beauty is in the use and the "legit" ageing that comes with road wear and playing. I prefer all the parts to be original, but real players always have some sort of modification done to them....and that's part of the story. Thanks again!

I was thinking about getting a guitar and I was going to ask what you thought about making a huge comprehensive comparison/guide of les paul custom v standard v modern v classic v studio v tribute v junior. Giving them ratings on sound quality and playability and such relative to eachother aswell as highlighting all the general difference between models. Then you could go over prices for new and used and give the general value price for each as well as which model is the best overall value. Thought it would be really helpful to people new to this and wanting to buy and just good for that information to be out there from an expert like you. Thanks for the videos!
