I am old enough to remember Jose Greco dancing his famous Flenengo on The Ed Sullivan Show, during the '50s and 60s. My father and I would watch him, while we were mesmerized by his magic feet! Thank you for bringing him around to a new generation of admirers! His son is almost as good! lol

Jazzycat47 he was my flamenco instructor when I was a kid. My mom made me take his class around the age of 8-12 this must have been around 96-2000 I would say. He taught classes at franklin and Marshall college in Lancaster pa. He right around the block from me and would sometimes pick me up for class or give me ride homes because my mom was a single mom. He was a really really nice guy as far as I can remember. I still remember his wife calling my mom saying he had passed.

For anyone that really knows Flamenco Dancing, this example is actually a very simple truncated choreography. Baby steps, actually. But Jose G. was a complete showman!!! Sr. Greco always surrounded himself with some of the best Flamenco Dancers from Spain. El Gitanillo de Bronce (The bronze Gypsy) is seen on the left side of the screen right next to the table where Jose G. is dancing. He is or was one of the good ones!

While I have never been a big aficionado of this type of dance, Jose was the absolute best, a truly masterful dancer. Unbeknownst to most he was Italian not Spanish. Jose embraced the culture, danced with Spanish partners, and Spain considered him one of their own. Toward the latter part of his life, Jose was a teacher and taught college in Lancaster, PA where he lived. He passed away at age 77 in 2000 and his family continues the tradition today..

Notice the girl in front? Her name was Pepita Sevilla. In the 1990s, when she was no longer a girl, I spoke to her about this scene. She said that originally Jose Greco had planned a dance with her, much as they had done in Spain, but at the last minute the producers nixed the idea because she was too young. They felt it looked odd for a grown man to dance with a girl who was -- what, twelve? Thirteen? Something like that. As compensation, director Michael Anderson put her right in front and allowed her to "ham it up" a bit. Pepita was still dancing professionally well into this century.

It may be the end of an "Alegrias" form, which becomes a brief "Bulerias". It has been a long while, so I am not certain. Despite some of the flamenco critics, Greco successfully took flamenco into the theatre. He was at least competent. More than that, I believe. Perhaps he became a bit commercialized by working in Hollywood.

@zethraelofteldrassil31499 жыл бұрын
+whoa horsey whoa Was waiting for such a comment - if you think this looks silly and feminine, I think you had better research the dance. Far, far from effeminate!
@whoahorseywhoa46859 жыл бұрын
Luann DeLuca ...... no I've seen other male dancers , most especially male ballet dancers... yes they too can look silly ... so what ? it doesn't take away from the silly looking flamenco male dancers ....both can look silly and feminine IN MY OPINION. Also ... don't make the mistake of thinking to lecture me on how much skill and work and sweat and talent they have ......I UNDERSTAND THAT ! ...... it is just that some choreographic moves are way to feminine to be done by males.
@zethraelofteldrassil31499 жыл бұрын
I am sorry if it sounded like I was degrading your opinion. I didn't mean for it to come off the way it sounded. I apologize. From a female perspective, male flamenco dancers are extremely sexy and passionate, as the interpretation of the dance itself demands. I am looking at the entire world of the flamenco [including the music, the instrumentals, the singing, the clapping, the tapping, etc.] through a woman's eyes. I believe one would be very hard pressed to find women describing male flamenco dancers as silly and feminine, when the dancer portrays "danger, mystery, dark, almost forbidden" air about him.
@whoahorseywhoa46859 жыл бұрын
Luann DeLuca No need to apologize and my perspective is also female..lol... clearly we have different tastes in men .. I love them to be ultra masculine with rough features and much more aggressive male posturing ..;) That doesn't mean i don't like flamenco or cannot appreciate the males talent .... I do . I just think SOME, not all of the choreographic movements are too feminine .. that is all . otherwise I am a longtime fan of flamenco ..
@zethraelofteldrassil31499 жыл бұрын
OMG, whoa horsey whoa, you are female also? Now, I understand your position on the more feminine choreographed moves. Nice to meet you!
