VIDEO NOTES
When it comes to the creation account in Genesis 1-2, most people will associate the number seven with the days mentioned in the story. But the fascinating thing is that that’s not the only place you can find the number seven here. In reality, the number seven is everywhere in the creation account and one of the ways to see this is to count words and phrases and even letters.
👉🏼 The word “God” occurs 35 times or 5 times 7 times
👉🏼 The word “heavens” and the word “firmament” together occur 21 times or 3 times 7 times
👉🏼 The word “earth” occurs 21 times or 3 times 7 times.
Altogether these terms therefore occur exactly 77 times.
👉🏼 The word “day” occurs exactly 14 times
👉🏼 The word “bird” occurs 7 times
👉🏼 The word “water” occurs 7 times in connection with the creation of heaven and earth on days 2 and 3.
👉🏼 The phrase “according to its kind” or “according to their kind” occurs 7 times in connection with the creation of animals on days 5 and 6
👉🏼 The phrase “And God said” occurs a total of 10 times in the story, 3 times in connection with humans and 7 times in connection with the rest of creation
👉🏼 The phrase “And God saw that it was good” occurs 7 times with the 7th time being the climax, where it says that everything was “very good”.
This is already pretty fascinating - but there’s even more.
👉🏼 In the Hebrew text Genesis 1:1 consists of 7 words
👉🏼 Those 7 words consist of 28 letters
👉🏼 In verse 2, there are 14 words
👉🏼 The introduction to the creation account in verses 1 and 2 therefore consists of 21 words
👉🏼 The conclusion of the account in 2:1-3 consists of 35 words
👉🏼 In those verses there are 3 statements about the seventh day consisting of 7 words each
To summarize: not only is the entire account permeated with words and phrases that are repeated seven or a multiple of seven times, it is also framed by sections that contain a multiple of seven number of words. And to top it all off: the entire account consists of exactly 469 words, which is 67 x 7. In other words: the number seven is indeed everywhere in this text!
So the big question obviously is: can all of that be mere coincidence? Did it just turn out like that by accident? And the answer is: it’s pretty unlikely - especially, since this is not the only place in the Bible where this kind of a thing happens.
👉🏼 In Genesis 9:8-17, where God makes a covenant with Noah and his sons, the keywords “covenant” and “earth” both occur 7 times.
👉🏼 In Genesis 12:1-9, the famous passage where Abram is called and goes to Canaan, the name “Abram” and the keyword “land” both occur 7 times and there are also 7 names of places mentioned 👉🏼 In Matthew 7:15-20 where Jesus talks about false prophets, the keyword “fruit” occurs 7 times.
And the list could go on and on.
In light of all that it seems much more likely that the focus on the number seven in the creation account really is intentional, in order to, among other things, underscore the perfection and completeness of the creation. In other words: the text about the creation reflects the perfect order, the amazing beauty and completeness of the creation itself. Which obviously says a lot about the God who’s behind it all. He is indeed a God of order, a God of beauty, an amazing, brilliant artist and everything he does is simply perfect.
