Bones Of Contention (2007): Can the fashion industry amend the body-image crises many young women suffer, or is beauty truly a matter of life and death on the catwalks?

Should ultra-skinny models be banned? The fashion industry claims it is being unfairly pillaged for the ‘size 0’ phenomenon. But self regulation has done little to weed out emaciated models.
“They have to understand that being thin is our job”, states one size 0 model. But following the death of anorexic model, Ana Carolina Reston, designers are coming under pressure not to use skinny models. Spain banned ultra-thin models from Madrid Fashion Week after complaints they encouraged anorexia. “We didn’t want teenagers to think excessive slimness is a model of beauty”, explains organizer Cuca Solana. But other fashion capitals refuse to follow Spain’s lead. “The whole size 0 thing has come from Hollywood not the catwalks”, complains Hilary Riva, Chief Executive of London Fashion Week. “It’s too simplistic to blame fashion.”

The problem isn't skinny people, the problem is that the people in charge allow anorexic girls to work, encourage it, and don't accept a range of healthy sizes. There needs to be a range of bodies, not a certain type of body banned.

Because the clothing is about whom they are selling to. These clothes cost a fortune. Most of the buyers are wealthy women with access, and time and money to work out with personal trainers, have plastic surgery, liposuction. This expensive clothing hangs better, and looks better on thin women. What do people expect, them to march overweight women down the catwalk? It’s a psychological sales pitch. It’s all about selling am image...for women to aspire to look like these women if they buy the clothing. The fashion world has their hands in our pockets, and depends on our insecurities for sales. Don’t like it? Don’t buy the stuff...from clothes to makeup. Seems, though, with the mob scenes every year, at fashion weeks all over the world, that there won’t be any change any time soon.

Yeah, I am an American size 4 and I am considered too fat for modeling. It really a farce to say the fashion industry doesn't perpetuate the ultra skinny model preferences, but its not the only reason. Western society embraces these norms and it is seen as 'just the way it is.' The fact that modeling has ANYONE dying for their career says there is a problem. One does not hear about other professions having these types of problems.

Wtf is that designer saying at the end? Well, yeah A lot of African countries are dealing with hunger and we should be worried about it, and try to help and all, but it doesn't mean that we should just let these young girls deal with anorexia and another eating disorders because of this industry's standarts. So the designers should stop and take responsibility for their actions and what kind of image they're promoting, and not just diverse the attention to Hunger in Africa.

I thought the same thing. The were marginally less thin than the London models but not that much. The Spanish models did have larger boobs though. That's the only curves I saw but I'm pretty damn certain the girl who did the nude shoot has implants so it sounds like the designers still want skinny models, they just want you to be skinny with an unrealistically large, perky chest for the amount of fat you have on your body. And to achieve that, they'd like you to undergo painful, expensive, dangerous surgery.

I was underweight as a teenager because of mental health issues - depression and undiagnosed ADHD made it hard to eat regularly. I would get compliments ALL THE TIME about how skinny I was, that I should be a model, etc. But I was not healthy - my period was irregular, my blood pressure was really low, my vision would black out when I stood up. I was cold all the time. I told people I was skinny because of health issues and trying to gain weight and they would get so embarrassed - as they should!!! This is the kind of positive feedback for looking SICK that drives people further into eating disorders. Now I'm 22, I've gained 20 pounds, and I'm so much healthier. I feel strong and capable. I get my period regularly, I have boobs and an ass, and you can't easily see individual ribs. And the messed up thing is that I would be considered "too fat" to be a runway model now.

You can forget about being a real high fashion model with a BMI over 18. It's just not gonna fly with high end designers. Being 5'9 or 5'10 and having maximum 60 cm around your waist won't make a BMI of 18.

I’m not a model, by any means, but my weight, is less than a lot. I’m even 47, post-menopausal, and birthed 3 children. I metabolize everything 2/3 faster than most ppl. Not only food, but alcohol and medications. In that sense, it sucks bc if medication is to be given every 4 hours, I metabolize and break it down. W/in an hour and 15 minutes, it can no longer be detected in my system. But, I’m naturally thin. I eat 2,400-3,100 calories a day, and I’m a 00! If a model is naturally thin, I see no problem w/ them walking, however, for the girls who go up and down in weight, they don’t have a naturally thin body type, they need to be at their natural body size, and it needs to be accepted that every body is different, and everyone’s natural weight is different. I’ve held the exact same weight for over 34 years.

The designer at the end is the most pathetic in this piece, Attempting to exploit the famine and hunger plight in Africa in an attempt to divert attention from Anorexic models and the culpability of the industry is beyond sickening. The modeling industry doesn't create Anorexia, Eating disorders are Mental Illnesses and are much more complex than the desire to fit a high fashion standard, But they do enable it and they don't care about the consequences, For every Ana Carolina Reston, Luisel and Eliana Ramos, And Isabella Caro there is always some model to take their place cycle continues.

I know ppl will hate me for this, but I agree. I love being skinny and being able to see my ribs and collarbones and have a thigh gap. But I don't have to work hard to maintain this because I am naturally thin. I think models should not be allowed to work if they have to resort to an eating disorder in order to maintain that size. Anorexia should not be encouraged, but then neither should obesity-somethibg which seems to be a trend in the media at the moment... Encouraging either end of the body shape spectrum is irresponsible and just plain WRONG.

@@cookiek3350 Yes, you can.I was at a BMI of 19 I had no fat stores, my heart muscle was beginning to eat itself, hence abnormal EGGs. There are many different body types, Arthur other end of the BMI range for my height, I'm overweight clinically. Look it up - there is a LOT more to healthy weight than a BMI. How else do you explain someone like me, whose BMI on paper was normal, but yet is a walking skeleton with NO body fat??? That is NOT "healthy" by ANY stretch of the imagination!!!

Fashion is absolutely c the problem. I worked for design company. Prepared for fashion shows. The garments are made and the models are to fit into not the other way around. They talk about the girls like mannequins. I would never want to be a model. It is not as glamorous like you think. It takes no skills to walk with clothes on or off.

It's true, me my cousin we were thin at 14 15 even 16 I started to gain more weight around 18 years old my cousin still to this day is thin after two kids so Is not right at all they should have as close as possible to normal women and men and age should 18 years old, NEVER before thatThe people that buy the clothing are women not girlsSo please I hope this craziness this madness shifty people who chose these GIRLS , they are nothing more than girls which a lot like me only had they re period at 14 or 15 years oldHow can you people have kids modeling grown women cloths , and another thing most women who buy are at least 30 years old and older because they got to a point at their life's where they finally can afford them , the younger ones who buy it's usually the parents who are rich etc.. But only after college or school and after working a few years only then a woman is more settled maybe an apartment a husband so both share the bills and so then the ladies and the gentleman are able to afford more but never almost never before that.....One knows this they think us grown women fall for this shit hell noOnly ones to suffer from this to have low self esteem are of course girls and boys adolescents and why? They re life is still a dreamy one they know nothing of the real world most don't so what they do?Start these horrible diets which is more self destruction and are constantly asking mom and dad to buy them these expensive clothing of course , as soon as one wakes up turns tv on computer on, cellular son they are bombarded with THESE anorexic disturbing looking models The people who hire them , maybe it's the designers are the ones who want these anorexic people they are the ones to blameIf their kids were close to dying with an ED I'm sure they would stop but because their back yard is multi million industry , it's great for millions of little girls as young as 6 or 8 to start wanting to lose weight to look like these models who sometimes die along the way , I hear of one or two every single YEARIn my time we looked up to Cindy Crawford or Naomi Campbell or Tyra banks or others who looked more like these gymnasts with some curves but today???? Very very very dangerous you stupid idiots who own the fashion industry want the models to look like a they are living in a starving concentration camp it's just horrific they look like they re about to faint on the run wayMen too I see a few men who are taking dieting and exercise waaaaaaayyyyy too far!!!!!It's p to us to say NO too if we say no they have no customersI love the ones they cal plus size models to me they are normal NOT super size AT ALL they are beautiful extremely healthy looking I mean I see some who don't even need make up because they have a natural glow and rosy cheeks and lips they are the natural looking womanI now only buy from them from designers who chose plus size models and my kids agree too they see how beautiful they are they love it!!!

Life can be hard, they can make and break you. You can go by the flow or go. You can go, or go on diet to get very skinny. Some photo"s are shocking. Some modelagencys like this are perverted and rotten. This is not healthy animore. Kills youth who are in the blossom of their life. The industry is very hard and it is all about money, and it is not going for your wellbeing and health. It causes much of stress. When you are not naturally lean you can starve to get lean and when you don"t do this you can get fired. It should be forbidden and it is criminal and can be a trigger to starviation. I hope cury models will be a new trend for a better and healthier influence. This can trigger to anorexia. Pushes influenceble young people over the line. Cruel like nero size zero. At the cost of young life. Life is nothing worth in the modelindusty and that makes it hard.

The Spanish lady would've been a true beauty but her spine....terrible....She was a mere skeleton! How do these women actually get through a day w no food at all?? I'd be passed out.Like, yes I've eaten less, but never ever cut food into tiny pieces,& there was only one time, many moons ago modelling was a thing. Oh hell, noooo. After hearing/ reading about the dark" side.Sorry I love a dessert at times not that I overeat. It's called methodical eating. I sit by my cat,no she's not trying to eat off my plate she's in a chair across from me Put some music I like on. Or a video. & try & just enjoy food as it was meant to be.......enjoyed! ❤️👍 It can be difficult as I've struggled in the past. But I've managed. It can be done. Good days. Not as good, Like anything else. But, I try to never compare my life to the others online ie. models, celebs. I advice no one else do either. ✌🏻✌🏻🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊❤️❤️❤️
