Well, when Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends was first shown in the US in 1989, it was shown as part of a TV children show called Shining Time Station (co-created by Britt Allcroft who developed the Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends TV show). Ringo Starr played a character called Mr. Conductor in Shining Time Station. Therefore, he narrated the US versions of Seasons 1 and 2, which only involved re-dubbing any UK terminology with US terminology. And also re-dubbing 'The Fat Controller' with 'Sir Topham Hatt'. Then after Starr moved on, George Carlin took over as both Mr. Conductor and narrator for the US versions of Thomas Seasons 3 and 4. Then for later US releases, they got Carlin to go back and re-dub Seasons 1 and 2, replacing Starr entirely.
