I built a similar character who was warlock/bard and instead of using stunning strike as the “fatal save” he used a pseudodragon familiar with pact of the chain and the invocation which allows for you to use your spell save DC on its poison. While poison is often resisted or out right immune the poison has the chance to straight make the enemy incapacitated which is incredibly powerful and allows the build to come on earlier and is less MAD

pam gwm 20 str at level 8 is probably a good idea
@torunsmok58902 жыл бұрын
With point buy you'd only be able to hit 20str by level 8 without ASIs, always using feats, if you point buy up to 15 and went custom lineage with a +2 in STR and your freebie feat as a half feat with a +1 in strength starting with 18, and then you'd have to take 2 half feats with +1 on your way up to 8. 4, 6, and 8 are your ASIs though level 8 so that means you can only have 1 feat at level 8 that isn't a half feat. Neither GWM nor PAM is a half feat, so ya can get 20 STR or you can get both of them, but with the build challenge stated, you can't have all 3 by level 8. You'd have to give up either PAM or GWM or your 20str till higher level.

Honestly could do a version of the needler where you only do fighter levels with extra feats. Gunner obviously needed, sharpshooter, piercer, medium armor master for another dex based half feat. It really is amazing; with everything that's changed from the earliest editions to 5e; that some vestigial leftover still afflicts the Monk. I'm old enough to remember when Bards and Monks were appendices to the PHB (and Barbarian [and Cavalier] were "periodical classes"). Nobody knew what to do with the Monk then, and WotC still doesn't. They eventually figured out the Bard, but they still can't make medieval Bruce Lee workable.

The traditional fate weaver is your Halfling divination wizard with Lucky and Bountiful Luck
@emulationemperor89246 ай бұрын
A title like the Fate Weaver makes me think of Zee Bashew's video with "Build Murray". I think it was a halfling divination wizard with the Lucky feat. That seems like the ultimate re roller to me. So I'm really happy that your build goes in a completely different direction. It's incredibly cool and I always appreciate your creativity when crafting these characters. I also really appreciate how you come up with a lot of story flavor for this particular character. It feels like I used to see a lot of videos about "how to play Obi-Wan Kenobi" or "how to play the Human Torch" or just in general "how to play ___ character" in the D&D system. So I really like that, while often your builds take influence from other media, you never try to build a specific character from other media. Thank you for all of the hard work you put into making content for us.
@thesuitablecommand2 жыл бұрын
My preferred support build is a Divine Soul 1 / Peace Domain 1 / College of Lore (or Eloquence) X. Instead of re-rolling dice, it functions by adding bonuses or penalties whose sheer magnitude essentially ensure a success or failure. I am playing it right now and I _loooove_ it! For example: If you cast Bless and use Emboldening Bond, that is an average of +5 to both hits and saves. Add Bardic Inspiration on top of that, and the average is anywhere from +8 to +11 when needed. And, of course, you can use the Ceremony spell to empower saving throws even more, but it's a one-time deal, so use it wisely. Alternatively, if you cast Bane and use either Mind Sliver or Vicious Mockery, that is a penalty of -5 to saves or -6 to attacks, on average. Then add on top of that Cutting Words (College of Lore) or Unsettling Words (College of Eloquence) and the penalties can _seriously_ change the fate of a combat encounter with a small group of very strong enemies. And if you play as a Halfling, you can take the Bountiful Luck feat to ensure your allies never suffer from those pesky 1's that negate all of your bonuses' utility. If your party has a lot of martial characters, I recommend going College of Lore, since Cutting Words will provide more utility than Unsettling Words if you are the only regular caster. Last point - as a Divine Soul, you can get access to Sanctuary as a Sorcerer spell, which is excellent for a Cha-based pacifist support caster. You won't need to break sanctuary often, especially if you are using the Bless strategy instead of the Bane strategy, and it can allow you to stay safe without needing heavy armor or high Dexterity. Saving throws will suffer if you have middling Dexterity, but Favored by the Gods can help compensate for that (if combined with Bless and Emboldening Bond, you can expect a +10 bonus to any single saving throw on average!)
@lucasrichards65582 жыл бұрын
I had a thought that you could, for a support/buff characters, take a "regular" build like fighter/barb PAM GWM, and track the increase in damage they receive from your buffs so you could compare and contrast support/buff characters like you do the other builds.

A bit more MAD, but more fun a thematic abilities. Drunkards luck (lvl 11) would fit right in by allowing you to roll without disadvantage. This video inspired me to try to brew my own debuffer/CC guy with the same core concept I noticed something Why stun when you can knock enemies unconscious? Entertain me for a moment Instead of monk, we put 3 levels into Undead warlock, warlock helps a lot in fixing the MAD issues of this build and get 20 cha asap, lets you fear every turn while doing decent damage with eldritch blast, get the invocation to give you advantage on concentration checks (REALLY GOOD) and, most importantly, pact of the chain If you get a pseudo dragon or, a favorite of mine, a sprite. Those, when you attack with them, make the enemy do a con save or get poisoned (which is neat utility and lets you fear other units for the duration for good control) BUT if they fail by 5 or more, very possible with bane + unsettling words, they fall unconscious That's completely shutting down an enemy without using much resources Of course we take investment of the chain master to make the con save 17+ You can make enemies, one by one, fall like flies Then the party gets to pick off enemies one by one, the first hit being a crit if within 5 feet, and they're still poisoned This way you can up your con by a lot rather than dumping it, shut down key enemies, all while providing the benefits of this build Bane sticks easier, you get to put more levels into bard making your insp die bigger, all while fearing, poisoning, and, when you want, make enemies go unconscious Portent is very powerful with this too Though Undead gives us more HP, our AC is still lower, but lots of benefits here

Me and my DM made 2 cool variations on silvery barbs(that are intended to replace it). One 2nd level variation thats an action that simply gives advantage and disadvantage to the next ability check, saving throw, or attack roll an ally and enemy make respectively. One 3rd level variation that keeps the reaction but switches the advantage for the same wording as the first part, that being (if they fail an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check {in the next minute}, they roll an extra dice and choose the highest) Also, your voice is like smooth butter, its great.

Very cool Colby, thank you for sharing. I love support characters. My honourable mentions on this build type go to lvl 1 Clockwork Sorcerer (Restore Balance, scales with proficiency and matches better with Bard charisma) and lvl 6 Grave Cleric (Sentinel at Death's Door, scales with wisdom and matches better with Monk wisdom). The build loses your stunning strike idea with the Bard-Sorcerer, if you skip Monk altogether, but there are some pretty impressive control spells in there. I went (not necessarily in this order) Clockwork Sorcerer 1, Eloquence Bard 8 or 9, Divination Wizard 2, Grave Cleric 8 or 9, because I like magic... a lot. Side note, those chairs in the background make me think you should do a video with a devil Colby in one chair and an angel Colby in the other, arguing between damage and support levels!

Race: Mark of Healing Halfing. 1 level into clockwork soul sorcery for Restore Balance then 1 level into Order Domain Cleric for Voice of Authority, cleric spells, and medium armor and shield proficiency. Then back to sorcery until level 7 for Bastion of Law, picking up twinned and quickened meta magics, bountiful luck feat, and Magical Guidance on the way. Then 3 levels into fighter (Protection fighting style) to get Battlemaster with Commander's Strike, Rally, Maneuvering strike. After level 10, you really can go anywhere. 1 more into Cleric for channel divinity? More sorcery levels for Trance of Order and higher level sorcery spells? More fighter for more of a front liner healer? Also the combo of Bloodwell Vial with Bastion of Law is nuts. Try this out and tell me what you think!!

This build is so similar to a character I have currently. The only major difference is that I did not take any monk levels, there was already a monk in the party. I even dumped con like he was talking about lol. I actually based my character off of Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. My character is a sleazy halfling with palpable charisma and a ridiculous luck streak. The goal of my character is to have him become a powerful noble, he is currently a count. He is level 16, and an absolute nightmare for the DM when it comes to saving throws against save-or-suck spells. I made him especially weak in combat, 6 in con, because I wanted to fear getting hit as the character doesn't like to fight, but prefers to manipulate and subtly convince.

This seems super fun. I imagine I'd play him as like almost a Gollum creature that has almost been driven mad by seeing behind the veil into the "true" reality of the branching web of fate, maybe by a deity like the Raven Queen. I thought you might go the route of Shadow Sorcerer/ Eloquence bard/ diviner wizard. You would be much less MAD I think you probably should have mentioned the mind-sliver cantrip in this build as you can cast it to debuff saving throws by 1d4 until the END of your next turn (so you can set yourself up for the next turn's save or suck spell). This is even better if paired with bane and a sorcerer's quickened meta magic to enforce a 2d4 negative to saving throws which you can make even worse with a bard's unsettling words or silvery barbs. If you did the build including sorcerer then bane + a twinned save or suck spell is an excellent combo for control as well. I'd also be tempted to go for a pact of the chain familiar with investment of the chain master. The warlock-only familiars have some nasty effects that are great when you can force them to massively fail the save. Applying unconscious and poisoned in a single turn against your spell save DC without using a spell slot is awesome. With the sprite, you can argue as well for being able to equip it with magical items as they should resize to fit it.

I used to play a Tiefling Warlock, whom the DM gave an item that could rewrite time - once per long rest, as a reaction when he took damage, he could negate that damage and teleport up to 30ft away, flavoured as the attack never took place and he was in the new location the whole time. I played it like the character (and rest of the party) never knew it was happening. He'd just panic and unconsciously cause it to happen as a reflex, and of course once it had happened, that's the way the timeline had always been.

I think this would have been an awesome duo, both thematically and character-builiding-wise. We could have a character that focuses on bending fate with Clockwork Soul Sorcerer and Bard levels, and another one going the wizard and Monk way. Both characters would be wayyyy less MAD, and it would surely be some crazy roleplay for a Fate-Bending Twins theme.

I love this build. I myself created a class specifically for this purpose (which I've been perfecting over the last few years lol), but it's nice to see a more vanilla take on it! Homebrew is great, but it doesn't always get allowed at every table, so I love this take! Keep up the great work ^-^

So, I love Monks. One of my favorite characters was a Monk. That being said, I made a character with a similar concept but just went full caster rather than take those 5 levels for Stunning Strike. This was nice because, as you said in your build, it frees up some ability scores. I went for Shadow Magic Sorcerer (for Hound of Ill Omen and CON save proficiency) and College of Eloquence Bard. I focused more on save-or-suck spells and I think it works out quite nicely.

I once played an eloquence bard for a one-shot, that was just the ultimate saving throw debuffer. So I had Bane to lower saves by a d4, unsettling words to reduce by another d8 (I was level 5) and I took magic initiate as a feat and picked up mind sliver from the sorcerer spell list to debuff their saves by another d4 (which is even better than Bane at this because INT saves are lower than CHA saves for monsters on average). Plus I had silvery barbs to force them to reroll the save in case they succeeded. So yeah as just a level 5 eloquence bard, I was giving a 2d4+d8 (9.5 on average) penalty to saves, plus silvery barbs if they made that save. The party wizard adored me lol.
@jacobwixted76162 жыл бұрын
As someone who has played an eloquence bard from level 1 to 16, it only gets more ridiculous. You are able to cast level 6+ spells with impunity due to giving the enemy -15 on average to their rolls. It is insanity!

I have a “Fate Weaving” monk. Variant human with the lucky feat. Multiclassed with soul knife and with psi bolstered knack. And I have a homebrew cleric subclass that lets me use my reaction on a failed attack, ability check, or saving throw to turn back time and roll with advantage. I can also use that ability for team mates and it’s Ssooooo much fun! Also I am a Way of Mercy Monk so I can poison opponents too

there is also the option to go 6 lvls into star druid as it will allow you to sometimes reduce a target's saving throw by another d6 for a total 2d6+1d4 for 9,5 penalty on a save that round and it can be done several times and you can potentially stunlock a creature.
@crownlexicon52252 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, stunning strike. The amazing ability to lock down a single target. ~~that all but doesn't work against enemies with legendary resistances~~ super powerful and the reason monks are overpowered.

And useless when fighting, oh I don't know, a spellcaster or other ranged combatant out of attack range with any number of minions. A single flying boi with a bow and a pair of doggos can incinerate a monk in seconds
@DvirPick2 жыл бұрын
@@chrismanuel9768 Monks are excellent against non-flying casters. High dex means they probably beat them in initiative and high speed makes it very likely they can move around the enemy frontline, getting in melee range with the caster and still have at least an action. Most caster monsters in the mm don't have their con very high so stunning strike is a bit more likely to work. Shadow monks have the most anti caster kit with darkness and silence. Astral self have high wis to land stuns even more effectively. And they can grapple the caster. At level 9 monks can run up walls, making it more likely they can reach flying enemies. Open hand monks can knock them prone to the ground with ease.

@eliaandreoli71872 жыл бұрын
i played a similar concept, Halfing obviously, but only caster lv 5 of divine souls sorcerer and 2 lv of divination wizard. At that point i could reroll every 1 with lucky(race feature), add 2d4 for Favered of god(Divine soul), reroll 5 ability check with Magical Guidance(Sorcerer), get second chance (Racial feat) and knew 2 future roll with portent(Divination). at higher lv, can get lucky and Bountiful Luck to manipulate more dice, and now with silvery barbs, i think is really fun to play to support all party

Reminder that bestow curse is a touch spell which you can cast through your familiar since you took it as a wizard. You don't have to get close. Fun idea for kirby smash: 3 levels of zealot barbarian + 2 moon druid => auto grapple as female steeder wildshape (CR 1), Jump spell + 90 ft natural jump height to throw enemy down from 200+ ft and deal 20d6 damage. The barbarian is to allow us to be revived after [we also] take 20d6 falling damage if dm says we can't land our own jump. Alternative option would be taking up to 14 levels of monk *specifically* for slow fall - not just cuz I like monks.... or use self-heal options from one of your other builds...

Speaking of fun ways to play an Oracle: one of my players in a Theros campaign I ran (it's since become a planeswalking campaign in a different system) wanted to be a satyr monk who was an Oracle of Xenagos (the setting analog to Dionysus)... and who could only tell the future while blackout drunk. Reminds me of an idea I had for a shit talking, "slippery-as-an-eel" pirate. Helena Lilywater: Lightfoot halfling Str 8 Dex 17 Con 10 Int 14 Wis 8 Cha 16 Lvls not in order: 5-7 lvls Swashbuckler Rogue 4 lvls Chronurgy Wizard (Maybe even a Bladesinger if you want to make combat your main thing) 1 lvl Hexblade Warlock 1 lvl Wild Magic Sorcerer 1 lvl Bard 2 lvls Fighter ASIs: Lucky, Second Chance Main attack: Booming blade with rapier + Sneak Attack. Being a Swashbuckler you can move away from the target after hitting Spells: Booming blade, vicious mockery, silvery barbs, fortune's favor, mage armor, hex, some more stuff Rerolls: 3 from lucky, 2 from chronurgy, 1 from second chance, 1 advantage from wild magic Would love to get the rerolls quicker and this character becomes a lot better a lot faster if your DM lets you take a feat at lvl 1 like some do, but that is in no way a given. Still, would be fun to play the character as someone travelling the land and learning from people she meets

I've made, but not yet played, a somewhat similar character (very) loosely based on the Skull Kid from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Race: Halfling (Mark of Hospitality) - if not that, then 'Lightfoot' Background: Outlander - but 'Hermit' or 'Haunted One' could also work. Class 1: Bard 5-6 (College of Creation) - the motes are reskinned as winged spheres of color that chime when "used". Class 2: Warlock 14-15 (Archfey) - Pact of the Talisman, the talisman being an ornate mask.

If you have bestow curse, and you choose anything but the "Target makes a wisdom save or takes no actions this round" option, I'mma have to hear some good reasoning why. That curse is practically a stun in and of itself.
@Torthrodhel2 жыл бұрын
Right off the bat, totally different from my own idea for an "ultimately lucky" character Cygnyfax, a bookish halfling who's more to do with being socially disparaged for taking deadly-seriously the academic persuit of the study of good fortune. He's very selfish in combat. If you asked him what he thinks about teamwork he'd probably say "You want those enemies gone, right? Well then I'll do that" and shrug.

Commenting to add a specific item to this, if you play ghosts of saltmarsh. Cursed luckstone gives you advantage on one check, then disadvantage on the next two, once per day. If you use lucky when you have disadvantage, you get to pick which roll you go with, turning disadvantage into super-advantage (picking the best of three rolls). So the cursed luckstone goes from being a fun, slightly useful item, to a something much more powerful with lucky. When we get to a critical point in the campaign (talking to a ruler, for instance), my skill monkey swashbuckler gets advantage on his first check, and then super-advantage on the next two. It is *quite* fun.

Halfling Wild Sorcerer 6 Eloquence Bard 3 or 4. Heighten Spell, Tides of Chaos, Bend Luck, Bane, Unsettling Words, Silvery Barbs, Lucky Feat, Bloodwell Vial (and other stuff to increase spell save DC), Boom of Fate. A halfling is excelent. But a hekblood could be more apropriate... Then try disintegrate, banishment, hold monster, mass suggestion and the like.

For a re-roller, I don’t get the monk levels. I’d be going lore bard to maximise how we can use our bardic inspiration dice and access to extra dice manipulation spells. 2 level dip divi wiz for portent. Lucky feat at some point. Maybe a war cleric dip for further manipulation with the +10 ATK.

The idea behind this would be kind of interesting as a subclass not necessarily able to you know do as much yourself but you make your saving throws for your team or yourself a lot higher and harder for enemies to pass and maybe like you do this by inflicting damage as a monk or something I don't know kind of like how the Grimm Hollow monk can put pressure points
