حطب wood. Hatab is used figuratively to refer to slander, calumny and gossip. All can ignite fitnah and strife. Umm Jameel, from a rich family, was a famous tale carrier and went around sowing discord - hence carrier of wood.

Perish the hands of Abu Lahab is an Arab way of saying may Abu Lahab perish. A part of the body is used to refer to entire person. Akin to the English way of asking someone's "hand" in marriage. تبا : damn or perish. وَتَبْ at the end means "and he is perished". This is not a simple repitition. The first تَبْ is a damnation and a curse upon Abu Lahab. The second تَبْ signifies that he is indeed perished. The ayah means "May Abu Lahab perish and in fact he has perished" coz once Allah damns a person then he is for sure damned. اغنى : to avail or to be of use ( from the root غ ن ي ) مال : wealth and assets. كسب : to earn or to acquire.
