Join world-renowned animal behaviorist, award-winning author, and subject of an Emmy-award winning film Temple Grandin, Ph.D., as she takes a tour of a veterinary hospital with Fear Free founder Dr. Marty Becker and describes what she sees, hears, and experiences. Learn through Dr. Grandin’s first-hand observations how we can better “see” things from animals’ perspectives and how even small improvements, exactly like the ones taught in Fear Free’s Veterinary Certification Program, can make a world of difference for cats and dogs.

I am training a rescue dog and everything Temple has said rings true for our experience. Daily repeative training.

Oh they had phobias 30+ years ago. We just didn't recognize them like we do now. We mishandled them in the vet clinic as well during that time by holding them down for procedures with 3+ people creating more fear and stress.

The very important take away is to not put animals in a slippery space! I'm going to try that with my cat and dog maybe I'll get some floor mats to bring when needing to go to the vet.

Also, other than when actual surgery is being performed (including wound care), I want to be in the room for the exam and non-surgical treatment, so they can see me.

Wish my vet hospital saw this. Rescue dog was good going to vet until I got sick and then covid hit, now they call him aggressive. I don't know what they did with him during covid as was dropped off and then they called to get him 4 hrs later. He is so smart it must have been something really big though. They just want Trazadone given

I 100% agree with Dr. Grandin to separate the dogs and cats. I have cats that only see dogs through the front glass door 25 feet distant on the sidewalk. They smell dog on my clothes if I've been to a dog-owning friend's house. And they are scared of dogs. I don't let them outside because of wildlife around my house (mostly alligators, snakes, bobcats, and a huge owl that sits in my cypress tree in the fenced-in backyard.) I live next to a wetland (small swamp) in Florida. I lost three cats to the wetland and I'm not making that mistake again. Although they are middle age according to cat years, I will start getting them used to procedures (maybe not the thermometer in the anus --I like laving two hands). Thanks for the advice.

They also need to design space so pet parents can visit their pets in hospital. Treatment rooms double as hospital cage space. My visit with my pet in ICU daily gave her courage to get better. She did not raise her head for staff but did for me. When I was in vet nurse training ICU had cats in cages across from german shepherds. It is for ease of care of such arrangement but the cats were so scared, hissy, inappetent, uncooperative. Of course when I advocated for the cats to be away from dogs I was scolded. If people only knew how cats are generally disliked by vet staff. Mistreated sometimes.

I used to be a vet tech. Worked for three clinics before I left the industry. The last two big city vet staff were not nice to cats when owners were not present. Cats are volitile usually and those teeth/claws.... I’m kinda a cat person and could handle them fine.

Like children, we don't let them have enough experiences and they can be fearful too...

I respect Temple but this video seemed to me that everyone there was trying to teach her something as if they already had it all figured out before she got there. How annoying that young dark haired girl was.....just Ssssssh....and listen.

If that is the only thing you got out of this, then I feel sorry for you. The video has so much great information to better understand and help our furry friends navigate what can be a truly stressful interaction.
