Spacing
@jameswebster26057 ай бұрын
He sits right up on the beat, if you listen carefully to the snare he puts it just ahead of the hi hats, not enough so it’s on a different beat, but just enough to make it pop. Steve Gadd does the same thing. Dilla would create beats that did it to a ludicrous degree, but this is so subtle it’s hard to pick what it is if you don’t know what to look for. Hope that helps :)
@bailzzzzzz7 ай бұрын
@@jameswebster2605feels to me like for the first couple of tracks the kick and snare are clockwork, with a really subtle drag on the hats. That dilla behind the beat 'drunk' thing is way more evident in track three, but do you think in the other tracks there's still a push or drag on the kick/snare? Interested to know, I'm not a drummer
@arthurmilano29207 ай бұрын
I feel like Nate’s style is to put most of his accenting notes in the ghost notes just outside of the 4 on floor beat, it’s perfectly peppered around. Much better sounding than somebody who just floods beats with unnecessary fills
@jas_bataille7 ай бұрын
@@bailzzzzzz It feels square but it isn't. It like a hand drawn square with nice rounded edges VS a perfect 90 degree square like a metronome. Billie Jean is the best example of this : you think it's perfectly square. But I guarantee to you it's not even close. A Casio is perfectly square : there is the same exact spacing behind every beat. Sounds horrible. Only a robotic movement can have the same exact space between the hit and when you *lift* the stick, so drumming is like a dance! Any groove breathes. Pictures a swing : 4 on the floor only move the swing a little and it comes back quickly, but the spacing is not the same between every note. A swing feel is perfectly clearly showing that effect, and a J-Dilla beat is pushing it even further, to the point where the mechanism of the swing creaks and jam a little before going to the other beat. Does that make sense?! That's why it's called a backbeat when you the snare, and that's why swing is called... swing! You can make a physical movement reference for any beat. As a drum teacher this is my secret weapon lol
