So basically the reason why Vox machina lost the fight even though they had the numbers is because one Sylas being a vampire makes him OP. So basically if you don't have radiant damage which pike uses you pretty much cant hurt or kill him. Which is why Lady briawood immediately attacked pike who is a cleric and took her out of the fight.

I confess that I never watched Critical Role. I should. They brought D&D back. I love that this whole show is basically a dramatization of someone's D&D game. It just so happens that the players are all accomplished voice actors.

Honestly, while I appreciate Critical Role for bringing D&D back into more of the public perception, its not for everyone; I can't watch it bc each complete campaign is well over 100 episodes and each episode is 2-3 hours minimum and some are as long as 7 hours and not all of it is character or plot development

@@Spherrum its not just the length thats the issue, large parts of it are unedited combat where theres a lot of calculation going on and a lot of crunchy mechanical stuff, which I find engaging when I'm actually playing D&D, but not so much when I'm listening to or watching someone else play it. I tend to enjoy stuff like Dimension 20's more streamlined approach to it where while there are whole episodes devoted to combat, they do edit out a lot of the crunchy stuff and each fight tends to be mostly plot relevant since each campaign is only 18 episodes max whereas since CR is a livestream they're not as tight which isn't bad in any way, its just not the content I enjoy watching.

Nah, voices don't make one a villain or hero. They just help set the kind of tone or feeling a character gives off. You could place most of the villains in Vox Machina especially into the heroes party without any real trouble. Just remove the actual villainy and reasons to fight. For instance make the vampire not a vampire and his wife use less dark magic and bam, they could replace the twins perfectly well.

Watching you say "How!?" about Vax stealthing behind the guard made me laugh, because there was a joke in the game that Vax's stealth rolls were high enough to vanish right out of the campaign. Even at the (comparatively) low levels they had reached at this point, the way Liam O'Brian (the player who voices Vax) built Vax's character meant that his stealth rolls were regularly over 25 (high in DnD). I love that they leaned into the absurdity of this here, it was a fun reference, but also a cool moment for Vax. [/ramble] Sorry, wall of text. Loving these reactions!

@@harshwaghmare4799 the d20 gets you the base result, then you add bonuses from any other stuff, that's where the ridiculous character build and absurd number of magic items they had in the campaign come into play :D Something like the result mentioned in the comment above probably also had +10 added from a "pass without trace" spell. That's a buff that can be cast to give everyone in range a +10 to stealth checks for a little while. I can't remember who usually cast that one, but it was used a lot during the game. It might have been Vex (who could cast some spells in the campaign, but not in the animation) or possibly Keyleth? But yeah, short answer: Stacking bonuses like pancakes.

Btw, this fight went in a different direction in the long term. Vox Machina was kicking this couple’s asses for the most part, and they retreated, only for Vox Machina to give chase, wreck their carriage, and continue to fight them for a bit until Delilah acted fast and teleported herself and Sylas out of there. However, a one-sided fight with main characters kicking the main antagonist’s asses does not make for capable looking antagonists (and they ARE capable) so the fight was probably changed for that exact reason, if not then to add drama.

Very unfortunately that means instead of seeing Vex blast Delilah with double critical hits of lighting and fire arrows, Delilah just brushes an attack aside and Vex lies on the ground for the rest of the fight 🥲 I'd say its a way to show that the Briarwoods are literally a higher level than the party, since there's no way to visually translate "Oh no Delilah used Feeblemind that's an 8th level spell, that means she's at least 6 levels higher than us ".

@@sasori2425 That was an easy enough thing to do though, he didn't contribute anything to this fight other than being the target of that Feeblemind. I didn't mean they needed that spell in there specifically, but that even if they did (on someone else maybe) it wouldn't work; they wouldn't be able to use the spell name and it would depend on the audience having meta dnd knowledge of spells. And actually, her original use of both Finger of Death /and/ Teleport indicated she's a level 20 wizard (edit, apparently not) neither of those made an appearance, but again they wouldn't easily convey to the new audience how powerful she is, its easier to just have them nearly beat VM.

@@sasori2425 ......spell slots dont appear to be really relevant to this retelling, the characters can either cast spells or they can't and the audience just has to accept it. Delilah dosent have "more capabilities" in reserve due to not using Feeblemind, that's the point being made; the original fights with dozens of spells are too complicated to translate, so we get "Delilah sends out blasts of the same vauge shadow magic and it takes out 3 characters. This shows how powerful she is." Even if it were true that having less characters made the fight harder, that's different from making the Briarwoods look pretty much untouchable; no one lands a single hit on Delilah, Sylas is unfazed by a bullet and just fights harder after a slash from the blessed axe. Thats a world away from taking 203 damage, "hes looking ragged" and the clearly fleeing the battle. Which, on to that, I trust the fine folks at CritRoleStats, which is where I got my info from. Yes in the round 2 analysis they put her at level 15~16, but that tweet from Matt about her equipment is 6 years old, I'm assuming there was no clear answer given on it? So there's no correction on the two 7th level spells I can see; she cast Dimension Door (range of just 500 ft) to get out of the fight, Vex's Hunters Mark tracked them to just around the around the corner of the building to their carriage. Once the carriage was destroyed, is it not implied that /something different/ was cast to complete their escape? Since Matt said the spell was not recognised, and Vex apparently could no longer sense them. So the original assessment of either Teleport or Plane Shift still stands, and yes possibly could have been an item she had.

The character Percy in the original live play of this was actually more calmer during this event. The animated series they made him much more aggro then his calm self which some fans question if that was a good call or not on changing his personality and attitude.

Yes looks like they did it to give him a more obvious character arc, original Percy might have actually come off as "boring" to some. Instead he goes from (mild spoilers obvs) aggressive and aloof at the beginning to opening up and actually smiling by the end. To new viewers he might seem "fixed" and all recovered at the end of his arc, but I'm hoping going into season 2 we now get the real Percy that from the original events; mild mannered, loves his friends, utterly brutal in a fight. No Mercy Percy dosent go anywhere.

There was a scene in the hallway, as they were walking to their room, where they walked past a mirror, and you can see Delilah's reflection, but not Sylas'. Delilah is not a vampire. The snake belt with an eye patch is literally a one-eyed trouser snake. There are lots of little visual jokes like that throughout the show... If reading this but if wanna know the feel of dnd then give it a shot. “But don’t wanna dump $60+ into books.” You don’t need to. Majority of the info is online and there is a starter kit that is about $10 on Amazon that comes with an adventure, sheets for players, 1 set of side and basic for both players and dungeon master. Ngl it is lacking for a starter set. If want something similar to dnd then there is the pathfinder beginner sets (you will find two if look it up. 1st and 2nd editions. Both rules are little different but the concept is the same and most ppl still play 1st to this date.) which works too. Imo pathfinder starter with it having more detailed sheets, comes with nap grid, pawns, reference sheets if quickly need to know something and content fo keep playing bit further then lvl 3 without really needing core books. “Don’t we need more ppl?” Nope. Literally minimum is 2 ppl which is 1 person to be game master and 1 player. 2 or 3 players works too with 4 being recommended but they ain’t required. You can do 5 to 6 ppl but that requires more work and planning so I don’t recommend that from get go. If want something more to your guys tastes being anime then I recommend these two. BESM (big eyes, small mouth) is an anime style tabletop rpg with rules to do faster combat and reactions. So wanna do builds and tropes like what you seen in anime then there is that. Ryuutama is a more laxed version of a anime tabletop rpg. If compare fo a current anime I say it’s more like ranking of kings. Can be feel good but combat exist as normal and combat sorta plays like classic final fantasy games. There’s more out that others will suggest but dnd isn’t as hard to get into as before. Literally just 10 bucks for dnd starter or 30 for pathfinder starters, make character in 10-15 mins, gm reads first few scenarios and roll the dice!

A roommate of mine got me the starter pack and I can vouch that it is really solid, for only 10/20 ( depending where you get it ). As far as TTRPG comes, I've never seen a cheaper; yet pletinfull, initiation set... I'm not a big fan of DnD ( the system is okay-ish, but the universe is lacking in this day and age )... But it's a great start to discover TTRPGs, and clearly an affordable one. Between this, and the free version of the books, you can almost play to the end of time for a mere 20$ tops...

So tepist (Sylas Briarwood) is actually a Vampire Lord (As powerful as dracula) and you can only turn into a vampire if he drains you of your blood completely and you die of it. So just a bit wont turn you. The femail (Delilah Briarwood) is not a vampire. If you rewind the episode a bit to where they are walking back to there room from dinner they walk by a large mirror. You see Delilah's reflection but not Sylas's. Delilah is an evil wizardess. She is a very powerful one as well.
