I don't find it sinister really. It is tragic that people took enormous risks and died. 1. Fenn wasn't young when he hid it. 2. That box must have weight a good deal and supply for the trip ie water, food etc. 3. He gave calculations of time and distance. 4. Weather. You have to keep all this in mind as a base factor BEFORE starting to even think about the rest of the clues and plan a trip to find the "chest". Obviously many didn't and we will never know how many gave up and safely went home. Sadly at least 5 paid the price. So: don't blame him. They chose to go for it.

I find the greed of the treasure seekers to be more sinister than anything that Fenn did. It gave people something to do for ten years until the treasure was found. Why are all these people mad at him? It's not his fault that people go look for this treasure. It's dangerous terrain, but like someone else pointed out, Forrest managed to carry the chest, hike to wherever he hid it, and get back home alive. Granted, he's got experience in hiking, walking that terrain, etc.. Then he gives clues to keep people out of dangerous places. If people are that greedy and obsessed with gold amd jewels, which would be great to find, that's a character flaw and not his problem. He even told people that it wasn't in a dangerous place. So why do people keep doing stupid s##t? Maybe they think that he's lying to keep people from finding it? Conspiracy theories, folks. The more I hear, the more it sounds like sour grapes because they didn't find it. Im glad someone found it.Good Lord, what a mess this turned into because of greed and obsession.RIP to all the men who died. Congratulations to the man who found it, and as always... GREAT story!! I read about it a looong time ago and it was really cool to hear the whole story and all of the details that you're so good about researching and getting to us!

I understand that the grieving families were looking for someone to blame, but I don't believe any of this is Forrest's fault. A lot of the people who died chose to ignore the warnings and precautions given to them. Forrest wasn't young when he hid this treasure, and it was probably hidden somewhere that he frequented regularly. The people who chose to white water raft, hike at dangerous elevations, and stay out in the cold without proper gear are the ones who should be "blamed", not Forrest. I put blamed in quotations because it seemed like these people were doing what they loved (despite some of their poor choices), and when it comes to these types of accidents, sometimes there just isn't anyone to blame. Hearing this story, it sounds like Forrest wanted to inspire a new generation to explore and think and use their imaginations to discover new things about the world around them. He wanted to give others the same passion he had for the beauty and wonder that can be found everywhere, even our own backyards. I sympathize with those who lost their loved ones, as well as those who lost their lives. But I genuinely think Forrest did more good than harm. I'm sure he inspired many people to get out of their homes and drink in their surroundings in a new way, and that's never a bad thing,

I truly am sorry for all that lost their lives chasing after this treasure. However, I don’t think it’s the old man’s fault. Before I embarked on searching for it, I would have considered it was stashed by an old man so it wouldn’t be somewhere too crazy. Even though it was laced with tragedy, the story itself was pretty cool. This is something people usually only wish and dream would happen in their lifetime.

Nothing sinister in my mind. We all should take responsibility for our own actions. No one was forced to go look for treasure. Some went and looked for it mearly as an adventure but others out of greed and even dispair. But whatever the reason they went it was their own choice. Most people will always think how great a shape they might be in but in all actuality they are not. Others think that they are so smart ,and they probably are as far as book sence goes but it's a total different kind of smarts to traverse the back woods and mountains. It's each person's own responsibility to knnow their own limits and really investigate all the hazards and dangerous possibilities before stepping out on any kind of quest.

You know, I’m guessing (especially considering his age) it wasn’t as difficult to find as people thought. They also all overlooked a very important detail the fella who found it did not. That it was in a place special to Fenn… I think that’s the most important detail of all. That and the fact that he was 80 at the time so why ppl thought he was doing acrobatics to hide this thing is beyond me. Those deaths are most certainly not his fault. Other people’s choices are his guilt? Bull. I’ll also, add that in his mind he collected all this stuff himself facing peril and dangers for years so why the hell would he make something supposed to be fun and a mysterious puzzle so easy?

i’m really glad to see so many comments agreeing that these deaths weren’t fenn’s fault, because honestly that consensus was reallyyyyy bothering me throughout this episode. the wilderness isn’t some easy task for just anyone to take on unprepared, and while i sympathize with the families of those that died out there, i also truly believe that their judgement has been blinded by grief (which i definitely don’t blame them for that, truly), or on the more cruel side of things (which i really hope isn’t the case), trying to take advantage of a family members death for financial gain. whatever the reason, fenn shouldn’t be blamed for other peoples choices that they made COMPLETELY on their own; they made the decision to go out, to take unnecessary risks, to leave unprepared, etc etc. fenn didn’t force anyone to go out there, not to mention he hid the treasure himself, meaning that it was safe for him-a very elderly man-to find. i feel like that right there is one of the strongest pieces of evidence that the people who unfortunately fell victim to the elements and nature were making unwise decisions in the pursuit of riches. being blinded by greed never ends well, and it’s definitely a tragedy that these five men fell victim to such an illusion. i can see that fenn’s intentions were pure and kindhearted, and he truly meant no harm, and he definitely never expected people to take deadly risks to find the treasure. i feel fenn’s only mistake was his faith in other people to be careful and wise in their decisions, and to not let the fantasy of riches obscure their judgement. i wish nothing but the best to all of the effected families, and i also hope that fenn didn’t let other people’s unnecessary and pointless need to blame someone for every tragedy effect his happiness and passion for adventure and archeology.

I’ve seen so much coverage of this over the years but didn’t know it was actually FOUND until your video! As usual, your content shed light on a long-running ‘internet sleuth’ turned real-life treasure hunting fiasco giving much needed closure… hopefully the obsessives unlike myself were already aware the ‘hunt’ was over, but I really appreciated finding out the complete end of this former mystery I’d seen so much speculative coverage on over the past decade. And good for the guy who did find it, both because medical school is bloody expensive and he can pay off the huge student loans, and finally putting to rest the accusations there never was treasure out there against Fenn and putting an end to the risks of the ‘hunt’ forever for both hunters and Fenn’s family. I honestly picked this Somewhere Sinister episode as a recap of a story I knew really well, then typical Jiles, you had to take it further than the preceding content I’d watched about the hunt and teach me something new. Which I’m hugely grateful for… just what I needed to give me a morning boost whist having my coffee. One of many reasons I love this channel and This is Monsters; you ALWAYS go above and beyond with your research and thus, over the years, you’ve earned my utmost respect as one of the most thorough and meticulous content creators whilst also imbuing every video with your unique personality and style which I love. Grown ass people CHOOSING to take part in a very real treasure hunt, sadly not prepared and ended up in fatal accidents nevertheless they were willing to take the chance. Where were the families prior to these people who made the choice to go, do, and end up where they did? Breaking in that mans house, sueing that man, blaming him, accusing him of not telling the truth about the treasure being real! Sore loosers, finger pointers, greedy, and a nice rich man willing to share his wealth to who followed his clues and found his treasure making it theirs is what this entire story boils down to. By no means am i speaking negative of those who passed and theres nothing I wrote twds them other then grown ass people willing to take the chance but all the others are just that..the others^.

I hate how people can never place the blame where it truly belongs. It's not Fenn's fault that some dumb asses went treasure hunting without the skills or equipment to do so. Fenn added wonder and mystery to life. People have been dying hunting down riches since the beginning of trade.

No one forced these folks to go out to look for this treasure. They went by their own decision. I love how the relatives are blaming Fenn. Look, I feel sorry for the loss of your relatives, but the only blame should be directed at them, not Fenn. It's sad how some can't accept that these sad deaths were their relative's fault and no one else.

Our country was built by people who were in search of fortune in wild places, where death or complete failure was at least as likely as finding a fortune. That these people didn't undertake the search in a safe manner isn't the fault of the 80-year-old man who had hidden it. I just heard today that a person complained to a cruise line that they weren't warned they might get sunburn on the cruise. This is the type of person who would go unprepared on a search like that this one and it's no one's fault but their own.

I remember watching a video series on YT about people finding treasure, but I don't remember what it's called. Anyway, after watching several stories about how peoples' lives were either taken, or ruined, by finding treasure made me decide years ago that I wouldn't do it for anything. Most of the time, people just wasted their life in pursuit of it. Some people die in the process. I remember one guy who trespassed in a foreign country and was arrested and held for years in solitary confinement. Sometimes the government's takes it. Then, there are those who are just outright killed for finding it. By and large, nothing good comes of it.

Falling down a 500 ft slope is anything but a 'quick death'. It can be one of the slowest, most gruesome ways to die. Depends on the slope.

Well, in the first place the old man didn’t make these people go out hunting treasure, he just gave them an opportunity to do something fun. I don’t see where he could be blamed at all for them not following directions. Congratulations to the guy that did find it. People have choices, it was THEIR choice to go hunt this treasure. I’m sorry so many lost their lives but it was not the old man’s fault. That’s the way I see it. Second, it is none of our, the public, business what he does with the money. He did not have to give these greedy people that information. JMO

I can’t blame Fenn for the carelessness of others. For one thing, I would’ve had it in my mind that this treasure is not going to be in a difficult spot, because it was put there by an 80 year old man. I think it’s a little tiring, when we have to blame somebody for other peoples bad choices. Everyone’s a victim in this country.
