Give the Drummer some. Fine bass playing too. When the live Album from Steely Dan came out I was a little bit disappointed by Denis Chambers. The Rhythm section from Dukes of September was not so tight too. But you guys captured the right unique laid back swing feel. MASTERPIECE

Steely Dan famously recorded multiple takes by several of the top session musicians of their era until they heard the performance that they wanted. All of those musicians were fully capable of pouring their entire lifetimes of experience into a particular take. So how did Don Dan and Walt Dan as producers choose any one perfectly good take over another? I have to believe that at a certain point it came down to who, rather than playing everything possible, left certain things out in the name of taste. This is how I feel about those who interpret this music. Anybody who attempts to interpret the music of Steely Dan better have the chops (both individually and collectively). But ultimately, I feel that the best interpretations of this music are by those who don't feel the need to show off those chops, and instead have the confidence to make a strong musical statement in a more subtle way.
