Much like any Oscar Bait movie, the best part are the performances. But I did like how the fights used the same commentary from real-life. And the theme of being the disappointment of the family + being overshadowed by a more successful older sibling hit home for me.

That's my dad's favourite film of all time, still meaning to look it up.

The film’s well acted, realistic, well directed, stylish & an intriguing sport biopic that’s favourably comparable to Cinderella Man (2005) & Rocky (1976). (83%) (4/5 stars) (positive)

Good review. I agree that the acting is the best part of the film. Though I found the film enjoyable enough.

What about "Ali"?

@Guedingen Mark Wahlberg must be in his 40's already, I'm 33 going on 34 and I used to listen to Marky Mark (his rapname) when I was a kid, he was older than me, so he is defenately near or already 40.

Once again The Good Doctor got it right. Whalberg is the heart of the film, while Bale and Leo, are the stand outs. Again I agree that why is Russell nominated for Best Director whilst the great Christopher Nolan has been sidelined, yet again. A decent mediocre film at best with a story that has been done many times before.

@keflar5 Dickie Eklund could run for ages he was actually ery fit even as a junkie and I think Micky Ward did get Charlene like that or something similair to that scene. Oh and it's not shit it's a terrific film.

@BigBoss7777777 I like what you did with Christian's sirname - I thought that was very clever of you. I cannot agree with your statement regarding Bale's wooden acting. I think he's far more interesting than you give him credit for. He takes himself and his character very seriously. He won't ever intentionally make you laugh; his characters lack a sense of humour for the most part, but it's about leaving an impression, and I feel that Bale's characters always do that.

i think Mark has got this one wrong, its hilarious and family centred. it works as a really good family drama (plus boxing) i thiink he may need to re-review this one.

@keflar5 He clearly is a nice guy by the way. Don't complain about grammar when you misspell 'character'. Its youtube not an assignment. That just annoyed me. My top five films? I'll humour you then. -Sideways. -On The Waterfront. -Glengarry Glen Ross. -The Good The Bad and The Ugly. -Heat/No Country for Old Men. That is what comes to my mind now. You'll be surprised to see no Warrior or The Fighter o no!! I will back up them movies though, because they are fun..

Did I hear the Good doctor right? Mark Wahlberg's the up-and-coming boxer brother? A bit far-fetched given that Wahlberg must at least be in his 30's. Or is that pernickety?

True. But Ali [and also Hurricane] are two [the only 2 I can think of] out of many others that focus on white boxers. The majority of boxing movies I know about or have seen have been about white boxers -alot of them are pretty good, and I'm sure it's not intentional and it's not a conspiracy or anything like that, I just think it's interesting :)

Just watched it and I agree with Kermode. Walhberg is sympathetic and believable. It's not that great a film, but the acting makes it worth seeing.
@WAAAAAAAAAAAY12 жыл бұрын
does anyone find it weird that the majority of widely released boxing movies are about white boxers? When all the best boxers are in fact black..... that said, i did enjoy The Fighter: it's fun and well acted etc.; however, it is in the end fairly generic :)
@glenndsouza54474 жыл бұрын
Thats lies. Do you even watch boxing? The best boxers are white right now. Fury, Usyk, Beterbiev, Lomachenko, Canelo,etc

Christian Fail doesn't deserve the Oscar, he's a terribly wooden actor. Losing weight and changing your appearance does not equal a great performance. He's emotionally unengaging in the majority of his roles.
