A group of 60 survivors in Odisha's Bargarh district band together as The Fighters Group and spearheads efforts to combat cancer, culminating in the inauguration of the region's first cancer hospital.
Bargarh, known as the "Cancer Capital of Odisha," has seen cancer affect every third household. In response, a group called The Fighters Group, led by Prasanna Mishra and Aswin Kumar Darjee, was formed on May 8, 2017. Comprising 60 cancer survivors, they united to raise awareness and advocate for a local cancer research center and hospital.
Their efforts culminated in February 2024 with the inauguration of Bargarh's first cancer hospital by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The hospital will provide comprehensive care with 40 IPD beds, 20 for daycare chemotherapy, ICU and HDU units, and more. Chairman Aswin Kumar Darjee emphasized the hospital's role in reducing the need for costly treatments in distant cities like Mumbai.
