The Fighting 69th in the 2013 NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade

This year, I decided to arrive early for this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City.
The first group to lead the parade up 5th Avenue was the famous "Fighting 69th" (69th Infantry Regiment, New York). It is said to have been given that name by General Robert E. Lee himself during the American Civil War.

The Fighting 69th, aka 'the Irish Brigade ' fought so bravely in the Civil War. They fought at Fredericksburg and Antietam, possibly other battles too. They carried an emerald green battle flag and traveled with their own priest. The priest would absolve them as they went into battle. The Bloody Lane at Antietam has an incredible monument to the Irish Brigade . The monument lists the divisions that made up the Irish Brigade back then. Magnificent valor from my countrymen.

Watching the st Patric,k day parade there is no other in the states. Being a Scot who’s people have been and done the World over in the love off the land we left behind we must rate as what we gave to the world was science and technology and brains. Best wishes.

Sam D they may not look like much on parade but they are the ones' who, historically, fight and win Americas wars, Typically our reserve troops can't march worth a damn but they can fight like hell!

Its not a military parade as such its a St Patrick's Day Parade. The 69th are not even equipped with rifles. So stick your boring little englander comments up your ass.

***** Actually he is right, The BBritishArmy takes Ceremonial drill more seriously. a Typical Drill weekend for the 69th in =s more focused on Combat skills. The 69th used to carry rifles with Fixed Bayonets in the parade. In 2004 before I went to Iraq with them we carried Weapons as they are supposed to be the Armed Escort of the parade. They no longer carry weapons as its quicker for the Supply Sgts to get released to go drinking
