Amazing fact: The Captain of Yorktown here, "Jocko" Clark, was the first Native American to ever graduate from the US Naval Academy. He retired as a four star admiral.

At the point in the film where the attack on Truck takes place, bear in mind that in one of the scenes there are 6 Alied POWs in a ditch down there taking cover, most notably among them is Marine Corp Ace Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. Pappy recounts this experience in his book "Baa Baa Black Sheep".

Well, well, well.....The voice of the "Captain" directing the sailors on the flight deck, is good old Harry Morgan, later to play the role of Colonel Potter on MASH 4077th in the US Army.

54:00 Zeros actually had self sealing fuel tanks. They had rubber inside of it, so that if a shot went through, the rubber would seal the hole
@onyxdragon11794 жыл бұрын
@Peter Doucet of course you'd pick the Hellcat, it's the most obvious choice. And yeah, I don't think the idea of using rubber as a sealing method would work much if the fire started in the tank itself.

This is a good scan of the original, a lot of the versions of this movie are poorly scanned and look blurry.

Find your way around a carrier in a few weeks? I was on one over a year and still did not know where everything was. Carriers suck.

Was this during Battle of the Coral Sea? I know, The Battle of the Coral Sea was a major naval battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy and naval and air forces from the United States and Australia, taking place in the Pacific Theater of World War II. This movie was made in 1945 and the battle took place in 1942. I think.

That was the first Yorktown, that was sunk after Midway. This is about the Essex class Yorktown, the second carrier to bear the name.

The battles in this film are after Coral Sea. Footage is from The Carolines in 1943 and The Marianas in 1944

I though it was said in the movie that it was the Americans that developed the aircraft carrier. I'm pretty sure that it was the British that invented the aircraft carrier, developed it, as well as the carrier planes, and gave their findings to the US.

Hōshō: the first purpose-built aircraft carrier commissioned. The first purpose-designed aircraft carrier to be laid down was HMS Hermes (1924) in 1918. Japan began work on Hōshō the following year. In December 1922, Hōshō became the first to be commissioned, while Hermes was commissioned in February 1924

The Brits developed what we would now call Seaplane tenders during WWI. True aircraft carriers were developed because they were not restricted by the Washington Naval Arms Treaty in 1922. British carrier air lagged way behind the Americans and Japanese due to the RAF having control over all aircraft production. After 1942 most British carriers carried lisenced versions of US naval aircraft.
@siliquaesid7036 жыл бұрын
True, but the british invented the angled flight deck then NEVER used it because their aircraft carriers are, bluntly rubbish designs. Deck for'rd takes a hit, you cant take planes off anymore. With two effective decks, you can.
@keithwatson13845 жыл бұрын
SiliquaeSid angled decks and steam catapults were used a lot on British Carriers, basically every major carrier invention is British! As for British carriers being 'utterly rubbish', tell that to kamakaze pilots who couldn't put a dent in them while taking out flimsy American carriers left right and centre!
