We actually have a lot of Filipino musicians that do/compose Original Pinoy/Philippine Music both in Filipino (Tagalog/Bisaya/other Philippine Languages) and in English. However, you need to step out of the mainstream / commercial arena to see them. If you consume music outside of ASAP/AOS/talent competitions produced by these giant networks, you can find them. Immerse yourself in the gigging scene (in open mics, in school fairs' concerts, in town festivals where they invite not only big established musicians but also their local musicians, etc) and you'd find how rich OPM (with emphasis on the O - Original) actually is and how well their song can resonate not just with Filipinos but also to non-Filipinos. Those musicians and their original music just don't get as much exposure because they don't have the marketing machinery that big networks with their own record labels or other big record label do have. Big networks with their own record label arm (Star Music/ Tarsier Records for ABS CBN, GMA Music (or whatever they call it now) for GMA) prioritize the music they produce for their own artists and have a rolodex of popular local and international music they already paid the license for to use in their various shows (remember that issue with SB19's song "Gento" and Anne Curtis in Showtime?) that's why people who's primary method of consuming music is via TV/Radio shows (musical variety shows/ talent competition) have a very limited exposure to good OPM music and they just end up listening to the same song being covered over and over again. In turn, they share and request the same music/songs being covered by various FIlipino artists to content creators like Waleska & Efra so people outside the Philippines are only exposed to a very limited selection of Original Philippine Music.

'Agree on your point about Celine Dion. In some ways she had a similar path as these great Filipino singers. Celine was a phenomenal star singing French in Quebec for so many years, unknown to the world. She was lucky (because she was madly talented) that she finally had the opportunity to break into the American market in the 90s, and then the rest is history. I don't think the reason OPM hasn't crossed the mainstream is because there isn't enough original music being made, in fact, there has always been plenty of originality in the industry. The problem is there is a disconnect between what is original filipino music and what the mainstream media pushes. This is because there is a fundamental problem with how the entertainment industry is structured, deeply rooted in history and how filipinos consume media due to these reasons: 1. Filipinos consume a lot of western media: Due to our history as a former US territory and as an English speaking country, we consume a lot of western music, just as much if not more than Filipino music. As a result, what's popular is the Philippines at any given moment usually depends on what is popular in the US. 2. Mass media is controlled by only a couple of profit based broadcasting companies: ABS-CBN and GMA dominate what is shown on TV thus controls which artists are given air time. 3. The Birth of the cover artist and the matinee idol: The combination of the pressure of competing with the Western market and the Philippines's largely conservative culture has made this monopolized broadcasting industry to pander to both the western itch and the filipino catholic values. The result - in order to be a famous singer that the masses see on TV, you are discouraged to be experimental and creative. Instead, most singers are limited to singing covers of already popular western music (often clean ballads) in noontime shows such as Showtime and ASAP, or transition to an acting career whilst upholding a clean images which often results in very corny and underproduced pablum. The same reason why we have love teams, our Christian values extend even to our media that even our actors have to be professionally monogamous. 4. The Underground: those who choose to be original, experimental, artistic are forced to create waves outside of popular media. This is why there are so many great alternative rock bands and hiphop artists in the country but you would never see them on television apart from the occasional special guesting. Most filipinos have developed an ear that compartmentalized bands, rappers and balladeers, this is because we often associate different genres with different levels of creativity and freedom. Balladeers, great as they are, are almost never associated with originality... that is usually reserved for alternative rock bands and hiphop artists who garner a different kind of respect. It is only very recently that the gap getting smaller because of the death of old fashioned broadcasting and the rise of social media and the internet. Most younger people no longer watch TV and watch everything on KZbin. Now filipino artists are finally given a platform where they can promote the music they want to make, instead of singing a Mariah Carey song for the 1 millionth time. Sadly, the industry molds the audience. For far too long, the only way to be a profitable singer is to sing Mariah Carey a million times. I am convinced that much of the filipino public are incapable of appreciating our own artists without comparing them to foreign artists. They could never just succeed as filipinos, they are stuck in the narrative that they may be good for the Philippines, but never good enough for the world stage, as if that is the one true measure for Filipino excellence.
