The thing with cooling is, if you buy a good air cooler, you will run it for the next couple of CPUs for the next 10+ years. Noctua and other manufacturers did a good job of providing new brackets for coolers bought in the past in the last couple of years.

Now I'm actually going to try to do a real overclock. This was just a dirty overclock I did to get up and running. My system is a R5 3600 with a ROG B450F gaming motherboard, 32 gigs of course air vengeance pro RGB RAM 3200 megahertz or clock to 3600 megahertz and the previously mentioned custom loop cooler with 600 mm of radiator. So based on the last portion of the video, stability and importance of workload, currently I have 4.4 @1.2785v as "stable" with 128k FFTs, ran for a few hours no errors. Previously had 4.5 @ 1.2875 and ran it for 2 weeks no issues in daily use until I tried 128k FFTs on Prime and that threw errors, now stuck between leaving at 4.4 or 4.5, just looking for feedback from others. Was using the computer mainly for excel (work) (large datasets and macros) and gaming. Stay at 4.4 or move onto 4.5?

Hi, maybe its possible you make same kind of video with this same motherboard and 5900x? I tried the same aproach on my 5900x to find stable voltage, found that under full load it runs 1.27v max with droops to 1.25v. So i set my voltage at 1.27V and all cores clock at 5.6ghz, got booted and running cinebench perfect with 22400score on average (21000 stock). However when i run prime 95 it crashes instantly. Maybe there is something from you video i am missing, but strange thing i noticed that with voltage override at 1.27v when running cinebench it drops to 1.15v and thats strange does mode 6 LLC does this huge drop? Temperatures are fine, when stock with PBO it runs 83c at Cine and when with 1.27v override runs 75c

BZ, can you check if you also have this anomaly, when you OC per CCX on your CPU, HWinfo64 shows CPU Core VId (effective) at 1.1v all the time ? It only does then when u OC per CCX. My CPU core voltage is set @1.350, and effective should be above that. But at the sema time it does not seem to have any effect on the actual OC, even @ 1.1v.

It can be worth spending a bit extra on a decent cooling solution, for the overclock, the reduced noise (that's a biggy for me), and also because, with a bit of luck, they can last for a long time, and you can reuse them with other CPUs. I've used one system with three heavily overclocked CPUs.

So actually I put hands on an Arctic Liquid Freezer (not the II, the older one) for free and I put it on my R5 3600. I ended up with pretty much the same overclock, with the only difference I could use a touch less voltage (I have an MSI X470 Gaming pro max). I see a maximum of 77C under AIDA64 with a silent fan profile, I guess it's kinda okay. Final Vcore was 1.325 V, LLC Mode 6 (it goes down to 1.294/1.3 under heavy load) with CCX0 at 4.325 Ghz and CCX1 at 4.3 Ghz (I'm thinking about backing down CCX0, the gain is almost none). Think I have to be satisfied with this oc, even if I was a bit worried about 7nm degradation, I guess it'll last enough till the next upgrade.

On my Ryzen 1700x Linpack Xtreme used to draw significantly more power than Prime95 (around 10 Watt more CPU Package Power), but on my Ryzen 5900x it's just about equal with P95. I don't know if that's because P95 became better (they changed some stuff for the torture test in the last couple versions and I can't remember which version I originally did my testing on), or if the internal structure of the new Ryzen processors is just too "good" for Linpack. Linpack Xtreme did have some problems with Ryzen 3000, which was fixed by version 1.1.3, and then again with Ryzen 5000, where it produced "hardware failures", which were false positives. Support for Ryzen 5000 was fixed in the latest 1.1.5 version of Linpack Xtreme (which I helped push out by beta testing), but it's still just on par with Prime95 on my system. OCCT also has a Linpack stress test, but after the initial memory allocation for each iteration it drops down from 100% core load to something less (1-2 cores just seem to quit) for their 2019 implementation of Linpack. The 2012 one does run at 100% continuously, but uses much less power, probably due to some missing AVX(2?) instructions. And then there's LinX, which apparently now has completely dropped their AMD support for newer processors due to the incompatibilities. At least if you can trust Google translating the Korean page.

VCCIO and VCCSA can safely run around 1.2V daily. The DRAM voltages you should be able to push safely to 1.4V daily but make sure you have decent airflow over the RAM at all times. You can push to 1.5V but rather not go over 1.4V.

I have almost the exact same overclock on my R5 3600. 4.4GHz and 1.325V in the BIOS, 1.275-1.281V under load. Prime95 and Blender stable. I'm using a Hyper 212 LED cooler, so the temps are just ok. More than enough for daily use. I'm pretty happy with the chip and the overclock. My friend has a 3600X with a similar overclock (4.4GHz + 1.3V). He got the 3600X for the same price as a 3600 (don't know how), so not a complete waste of money I guess.

Its a very reasonable oc what you done. Your chip is better than my chip. Im run my 3600 on a prime x370 pro on 4.2ghz with 1.325v set, llc4. This allows to droop until 1.312 in prime95 ver29.8 small fft avx. Im using a Deepcool Assassin 3, and believe me, on ryzen, there IS NO overkill cooling. Also, a good cooler (not certanly an AIO, but a decent air cooler) can serve you for a decade. For example, you can use it for even the 10th gen Intel lineup :D Thank you for the vid!

I am using Cooler master T400 with my Ryzen 5 3600. I get temps not higher than 80 degrees in playing Apex legends which normally pushes CPU to its limit. This temp goes for both in Precision boost and Auto OC I did lately for a week. In PB I get 4200Mhz all cores and in Auto OC I get 4300Mhz all core. And as I said same temp range. Although I didnt like this cooler master T400 contact surface which wasnt smooth and I did some lapping also. And I got good results. Before this I was reaching 85 again.

BZ is correct but here's why, as the cpu goes under load it draws more current. More current will drop voltage at the cores. Vdroop helps compensate for this by actually increasing VRM output voltage to maintain a more consistent voltage at the actual cores thus allowing stability. BZ likely has a vidy on it, but there's more detail out there if you want to learn more.

Hey Buildzoid, I am having a WEIRD ISSUE. I have the x570 Tomahawk and the 3600 cpu. I can CCX or all core overclock cpu in bios 42.25x, can benchmark cinebench and prime95 with OC settings no problem good temps using 280mm AIO. As soon as I open or exit a game like Warzone or Doom Eternal, my overclock reverts back to "auto" settings, cpu no longer at my OC settings, cpu all cores goes down and vcore goes up, huge lack of performance. When I reboot my bios settings are still as I set, everything fine again till I open a game. Can you help me out Buildzoid or test this out??? I feel ripped off or found a bug? This happened on current and previous bios!!!!

This is just in Windows and you notice it when you open HWINFO64? What do your thermals look like when you exit a game? This sounds like a Windows power management issue, try enabling / disabling "game mode". Also, a long-shot but double check all of your CPU/GPU power cabling. It's possible that something isn't getting enough power/voltage when both the CPU and GPU are loaded.

@@racerex340 I set manual OC settings in bios. When I boot up windows, HWiNFO shows my cores at 4,225mhz and vcore at 1.33 as its set in bios. If I run prime95 or cinebench, the settings stay the same and it performs as configured settings. My temps are great, 30 minutes of prime95 and temps max at 75c. This pulls around 105 - 125w in cpu power package, more than games will ever use. I was thinking it could be something related to software in windows as I've used Ryzen Master, but have uninstalled/reinstalled to try and fix issue. I will check the windows power manager next, thank you for the tips, this is driving me crazy as stock 6 core settings will not allow me to game/stream properly, cpu hits 100%
@racerex340
@racerex340 3 жыл бұрын
@@enacku I would definitely try disabling Windows game mode as a first step. Game mode helps 80% of people that buy laptops and pre-built PC's, as it prioritizes CPU/GPU resources while keeping power and thermals down for games, but it also does so by lowering the clock frequency and is not streaming aware, so while a game like Apex might run just fine if you aren't streaming with Window Game mode enabled, it's not like Game mode is OBS aware. Disable game mode, update MB BIOS. There are other Win10 power management settings that you can disable but every major update of Windows 10 has resulted in more of those settings being hidden / removed, do some googling, there are registry / GP tweaks to restore power management configuration options so you can make changes.

@@racerex340 Turning game mode off didn't work. I discovered my vcore was set to "AMD overclock" because whenever I set it to 1.3v "Override" I could never get the vcore to show up what I set it at, would be 1v - 1.1v.... Couldn't boot when cpu multiplier was set to my OC. So I went in to another advanced bios setting for manual CPU overclocking, put in 1330 and that was the actual spot in the bios which controls override vcore, not the front page of "OC Settings" That is very confusing and maybe bug. I thought this might fix settings being reverted back to "auto" after I launch/close Warzone/Doom Eternal, but It didn't work. Buildzoid is using the 1st bios when doing his OC, wonder why he hasn't upgraded and maybe that will fix my issue? Would hate to go back to original launch bios. ughhhh

@racerex340

If you're considering the Aorus master, you're willing to spend over $350. Why get the Master when the Aorus Ultra is basically the same board, same 12+2 VRM's, same 3 x PCIe m.2 gen4, same wireless chipset and audio for under $300. From what I can tell, the only differences are that the master includes 2.5gbit and 1gbit LAN and includes an Aurus Wi-Fi antenna. Instead of a 2.5gbit LAN port, the Aurus Ultra includes an additional PCIe gen4 x4 slot, which I feel is more useful as you could put a 10Gb NIC in that slot if desired.

@Buildzoid You shouldn't say that about the cooling, while you're 100% right about the cooler price not being worth for the CPU, it still performs roughly on par with big boy aircoolers such as the scythe ninja 5 which cost new around 40-50bucks while used even less. My current overclock is 4.2 Ghz @1.27 volts. I was stable at 4.3 @1.294 volts but temps were really starting to get a bit out of hand with Prime 95. I'm using a Asrock B450 pro 4 board which does not have LLC (voltage drops to 1.23 in prime 95) and has pretty meh power delivery (close to 90 degrees in prime). Cooler is a 212 EVO so I've decided to caution on the safer side with just a 4.2 Ghz OC. I'll be moving the build to a NR200 SFF PC in the next few months so maybe with a good ITX board and a better cooler I'll see if I can get acceptable temps at 4.3 Ghz or beyond. Great video btw.
