Though not religious at all, I experienced a small “miracle” in Chicago during JP’s visit to that city. I was trying to catch a bus from downtown to the south side and noticed that the usual hustle and bustle of the city was missing, replaced by a surprising stillness and calm. From a distance I saw JP pass on Michigan Avenue and realized that the peaceful stillness was due to everyone being focused on him and his motorcade. Thought nothing of it but was impressed with the peace and calm atmosphere that prevailed in a normally busy area. My bus was delayed but I waited patiently. When my bus arrived, I boarded and was about to pay my 75 cent fare when I discovered that I had no coins and only a five dollar bill. Chicago buses do not make change and I was about to disembark and try to break my fiver. Well, to my astonishment, a number of passengers suddenly got up and offered to give me change for my five dollars! Usually people just look the other way in these situations, but the pope’s presence had brought out an impulse to help out. In the context of life in Chicago, I always considered their courteous gesture to be a minor miracle.

I remember I waved to Pope John Paul 2 in Rome when I visited the city about 18 months before his death, and he waved back. I admired him so much for carrying out his duties to the very end despite his Parkinson’s disease and health problems that come with old age. He was without question the greatest Pope, certainly of recent times.

I remember when he came to visit Iowa. ( Des Moines 1979 Living History Farm 350,000 people! I'll never forget an overhead photo of the people. It's like that was MY Woodstock!) I didn't think it was really true until my Mother came home sobbing uncontrollably. She couldn't even speak as she knelt down on her knees. My Father kept whispering in her ear, " Judy, Judy, Jude, come on now, what's happened?" After a while(seemed like forever to me and my brother and 7 sisters) she was trembling and of course, we thought something really awful had happened because after having 9 living children and 1 still born ( my brother David) this woman was the strongest Mother ever known.( at least to us) she said " He chose me to sing for him" (we hadn't heard of the Pope's visit yet) Dad asked, " Who wants you to sing for him?" She finally muttered, "The Pope" 😳 ????? She put herself together and told us, with the tear soaked letter from the mail, "The Pope has decided to visit us in Des Moines, I, along with 2 other people from our church choir that Mom lead had been chosen to be a part of the choir to welcome Pope John Paul II to Iowa. My mother was raised true blue Catholic, even sent away to a Catholic boarding school far from my Grandparents. She devoted her life to the religion as well as ours. I've never seen my Mother ever cry much less like she had just done. She said" These are tears of joy after all my life dedicated to the Catholic religion. We were never so proud. We had VIP treatment when he arrived by helicopter. ( me, only 10 yrs old thought that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen)There were thousands of people there. It will forever be a cherished moment in my life. (P..S she was supposed to work that day at a local grocery store, her boss told her she could not have the day off!😳 Dad said, um, well Judy the HIGHEST boss is calling to you. @TruthSeeker75 I was raised with Latin Mass. I loved it and still miss it. JPII was a major influence in my return to my faith. I cannot judge him. I say my prayers, The Rosary ( I think it is beautiful in Latin!) and attend M ass as often as I can ( I am a senior). Today's Gospel taught us to not judge, to forgive our enemies, to pray for those who mean us harm. I do not believe that JPII meant harm to anyone, and those who are in error desperately need our prayers. I will listen to Jesus because I fear Him, not what anyone here on earth.

@TruthSeeker75 what "day" did God create Hell? The Bible speaks of eternal fire. I am not all-knowing, nor is anyone on earth, only God. We were warned that our choices will be judged when time ends (mortality). I only pray that my choices be for God's will for me, and He loves me and wants me to always be with Him. What others choose is owned by them and not me. I can hope that my example be godly, but, alas, I am prone to sin by inheritance. Therefore prayer is extremely important for my salvation, and all I can wisely give to others is prayer because my choices are influenced by inherent tendencies. Only prayer avails for me. Judgement does not belong to me, thank God!
