I've met a number of these "Outdoor Control Freak Daredevils". Their attitudes ultimately get them (and often others) killed. They also live their lives mostly "hand to mouth", sacrificing family, career and meaningful relationships in exchange for their (self-indulgence) "sport". To each their own (we all have fill our voids). Personally I kind of enjoy watching my grandchildren growing up and see more value in a long productive life.

@@landosmith1974 I would say an example is some of the climbers on Mount Everest if you really need an example. But in seriousness, these type of guys have the persona's of the type who want to be forever young and I dont think old age would suit their need for freedom and mobility. They would probably die from depression. Most do inevitably die early through an accident. I wonder why they bother getting married and having kids, its not the type of lifestyle that suits family life.

I'm not "hating" on Dean, and I agree with the sentiment that it's best to live a short interesting life than a long and boring life. HOWEVER, it seems that age was definitely cutting into Dean's enjoyment of extreme sports. It seemed at this point he was merely doing it because he had always done it. He describes a lot of anxiety leading up to this jump, and it may have been time to dial it back and simply enjoy the outdoors without risking life and limb. It seems he was living on reputation at this point, and not on passion.

The first time I went to Yosemite as an adult, I met Ivo in the meadow under El Cap, who had Dean's dog with him. He was talking to us and then I looked up and saw a large object falling from the sky. It looked like a rock, then a bird, then a squirrel, then it landed in the meadow and I realized it was Dean! ...I once had a dream that I was in an area like Tuolumne with rolling granite domes. I had a haul bag on and walked over to a large hole, jumped down with a parachute, and aide climbed a long 5.9A3 route to get back out. That's how I imagine my Heaven to be. And I bet Dean is getting after it too!

Stella Johnson - Stella, they hit the rock outcropping before the ripcord of the parachute would have been pulled. It astonished me that someone could invent and perfect this strange 'flying squirrel' suit and then its just mindboggling they can do that kind of deadly daredevil jump like that. It seems to me it's a strange thing where it will be terminal. Everyone who does these kinds of extreme flying contraption suits has or will die. Now the thing is, it will 1-in-300 sort of guarantee but nobody really knows when it happens. It could be your 12th jump but another may very well do 299 then die. Funnily enough, people who raise and live with wild animals such as chimps or tigers have pretty much the same thing going on. You WILL die. The excitement might be that you just don't know if its sooner or later but you WILL die from it.

I LOVE NatGeo, I've been reading their magazines since I was a child. I also love NatGeoWild, on TV but I don't particularly like seeing someone kill themselves. I've seen people die and it is not pleasant. I'm a GA pilot and after I had learned to fly, I was at an airport where guys were sky-diving and I was watching with the local flight instructor. One guy's chute did not open, he fought it all the way down, when he got fairly close, the flight instructor threw his binoculars down on the ground and walked away. I watched the guy go splat and I'll never forget that as long as I live. Years later, I saw patients die in hospitals on wards or in the ER and it is always difficult. Especially anyone young dying. People who risk their lives usually THINK they won't die, but they usually eventually will die!

I don't understand why so many people are hating, first of all he can choose to do what he wants, he was an autonomous human being and could make his own choices and the consequences that came with them. Secondly, can you imagine what the sensation of flight is like?? The human lifetime is so fractionally small, I can see how that sensation is so much richer than living 80 years worrying about not doing things because they may or may not be dangerous, and you might die because of it. Every time you get in your car to drive somewhere you risk death, to a lesser degree perhaps but you risk it nonetheless, you risk long term disease depending on what you eat or what your habits are so with that in mind id rather go out flying than in a hospital bed shitting myself cause I'm too frail to even take care of myself, supported by machines that barely keep you alive just for the sake of it. Staying alive just for the sake of staying alive doesn't seem something that great.

When these trolls come out or our armchair critic who doesn't have a clue, we need to simply ignore them. That's right. No matter what they say, leave them to scratch themselves because they will give up ghost and go elsewhere. I don't climb, fly or anything else. But I respect those that do. Just because I don't understand why or how doesn't make it rubbish. You see for me every day is a school day, so I want to learn. Circumstances has taught me that just being alive is not enough. There are too many people bored with the rat race but are too frightened to break free. So when I see those living their own lives doing what they love, I rejoice! Because they wake up every day with a smile on their face. No dreading Monday morning! I would rather die young doing something I love than having regrets when I'm old and bored at 80!

Ask his family?? So you're claiming that one should never do something dangerous because they might die and that might make their family sad. That's quite sad, if one's family understood how much one loved something if they did indeed love it then they wouldn't put their selfish desires over his. Is a person who is terminally ill meant to keep on suffering for years on end so his family wont be sad instead of doing the humane thing which is allow euthanasia if that was his wish??????? If you think that yes they should that is the most monstrous and selfish thing I have ever heard. Death is part of life it can come from the most unexpected place but yea lets all just make the mistaken assumption that if you don't do dangerous stuff you wont die, and you don't do it because you might make your family sad. If that's how you want your children to live and that's how you want to live the remainder of your days fine. But don't posit what someone's family might think because you might be surprised to find out that they understand. Either way I'm done responding its a waste of my time, you guys are like broken records.

The worst part was going up the mountain in a jeep that was like from World War Two, it was terrifying and hurt every bone in your body, but when you get to the top all pain and fear disappears, and the run off the mountain, it truly is as if this is the life, will it be the end also.

We don't like "da guy" at the start of the video (0:05-22), there's NO room for cockiness at places like that! And sadly, Dean Potter died on 5-16-15 on a base jump at Yosemite along with his buddy Graham Hunt; they both crashed into the side of a mountain wall/rocks, flying notches while wing-suit flying. Dean was 43 and Graham was 29. Thrill-seekers usually don't live to old age. I was one years ago, but not to the degree they tempted death. I quit while I was ahead. I HATE it when I read about these guys crashing and dying, so unnecessarily! Very sad. Some accounts of the accident state Potter was wearing his Go-Pro helmet cam and others say he wasn't. But it is said that it was dusk (about 7:30p) and they were making an illegal "night jump" I doubt they wore cameras. Both Dean and Graham knew Sean Leery, who also died in a jump before they did. Why these guys continue to jump when they KNOW it has killed their friends is anyone's guess. Very sad.

It's called living life on your own terms. I would never do these stunts myself but I can really respect the courage it takes to dare that level of fear and conquer it. All I could think while watching was how powerful and free that must feel. I can see how it could become very addictive with true freedom being so scarce in this world.

I can verify dean deff had go pro on , it was pretty gnarly bro , they should have never jumped was very dark and can hear the wind howling in background , it was over very fast , they were supposed to jump left to El Capitan by the wind immediately took them right to one of the hardest lines in the day to pull off , graham immediately hit a notch in wall and went hurling toward dean who tried to maneuver away and splatted seconds later it was so loud I can still hear it ...also dean's girlfriend took pictures ..won't say how I saw this but can confirm

Very risky to stand near the edge without a harness. A sudden gust of wind 🌬 and it’s a bad situation. Also yes to many people, asking about the platform. I have built a few “stages” in my time. For all of you writing all these poor comments, he did what he wanted to do, he knew the risk. He lived his life they way he wanted to. As Jim Morison said "no one gets out of here alive" that's all of us. As an older person I see I lot of people just hanging on, they have been dead for years and they know it. Some people and that would include me needed to take risk to feel alive, some got lucky and lived through that part of their lives, some not.

The people posting insulting comments are also doing what they want to do. If it's OK, even admirable, for someone to jump off a mountain, how is it any less OK for people to express whatever opinion they want about it? People who are brave enough to jump off mountains cannot be snowflakes who cower in fear at ridicule from distant strangers. Some people get their thrills by taking real risks, and some people get their thrills by making jokes about them. I can't see how anyone who justifies one pointless behavior can judge someone else for an equally pointless behavior.

And those who love safety live lives of quiet desperation never venturing out or pushing boundaries to see what they're capable of or what experiences life has to offer. Inspired of what, - just to satisfy the illusory selfish adventure to compete with his own self! Self, self, self -very well, very selfish indeed - selfish ambition. I would rather be an inspiration to others by spending my life in the service of my country and my fellowmen. People who died and those who will die by doing dangerous activities to satisfy their own pleasures are "accidents waiting to happen". Another thing, they usually ended up either mangled or like mince meat - yuck...
