At 19:48, who was the supplier of the majority of genetics the Spanish seed makers were growing? Who has the biggest variety of genetics on the planet and how many popular seed breeders and/or their companies work under that one roof? As for Nevil's early years, Are you sure Nevil didn't travel around giving away seeds and/or collecting seed from growers in different states around the country before he went to Amsterdam? Would have been a valuable asset to his early work. Seems to me, there is a few early years missing in the "cannabis history" story from around 75' to 80'. Something that sticks out to me is the Skunk plant (78) and Van Halen(77 or 78) arrives on the scene about the same time. Any thoughts on Nevil's travels during those years I mentioned? I respect and appreciate your devotion on the history by the way. You've filled in some of the gaps, but things get hard to research before 1980. Most of us that participated in that time era are dying off rather quickly now. A lot of old grower's heirloom genetics are now lost forever since the "Rona" tore through that population. >90% of the old growers were never in a "Overgrow" forum or on social media for that matter. There was so much "pollen chucking" going on back in the late 70's and 80's, there could be millions of dried up seed in some ole geezers barn loft to a floor in an outbuilding, from old workshop cabinets to dresser drawers, no one knows. Most families could care less about a dead person's stuff after they're gone. They fight over the property rights. Sorry, I don't get out much and am long winded at times. lol The "path of life" can force a person to change habits and desires, but once a grower, always a grower.

Just a couple of corrections. Plant breeding is very much a part of evolution. Artificial selection in plant breeding leverages the same fundamental evolutionary principles and mechanisms as natural selection: Variation - Differences in traits between individuals exist within plant populations, arising from mutations, recombinations, etc. This provides diversity for selection. Inheritance - Offspring inherit genes from their parents. Desired traits can be passed on and propagated through controlled crosses. Selection - Plant breeders selectively choose parents with desirable traits to cross, and select progeny over generations with the target traits. Time - It takes multiple generations for selective pressures to incrementally alter gene frequencies in a population. Isolation - Separating selected individuals reduces gene flow from unselected individuals of the same species. So plant breeding takes advantage of naturally occurring genetic variation and artificial selection to gradually enhance desired traits tailored to human needs - the same process as natural selection, just directed by human goals. In this way, it remains very much grounded in the principles of biological evolution. The traditional view has been that evolution is an exceedingly slow process that takes place over thousands or millions of years. However, modern research has provided a richer understanding showing evolution can also occur over much shorter timescales: We now have many documented examples of evolutionary changes occurring rapidly over just tens or hundreds of generations in some species. Factors like changing environmental pressures can drive more rapid evolution by selecting strongly for specific adaptive traits. Species with short generation spans like viruses, bacteria, and some insects/plants can evolve noticeably in just years or decades. High mutability, quick reproduction, and large population sizes enable rapid genetic shifts. Horizontal gene transfer can allow rapid exchange of useful genetic traits between contemporary organisms. Humans have accelerated evolution of species we directly breed or through unintended environmental changes. So while evolution was long considered an incremental gradual process, we now recognize it can also occur relatively quickly under certain conditions. The key prerequisites are genetic variation, strong selective pressures, and sufficient generations for gene frequencies to shift. Given those factors, observable evolutionary adaptation can arise more rapidly than traditionally assumed. Our understanding continues to develop with modern genetics., The fox breeding program that started in the soviet era and still exists to this day has shown this to us very well. It only took ten generations to go from man hating wild foxes to floppy eared , barking foxes with coat colors not ever found in wild foxes. This is just a famliar example but many more exist.

Floral traits like aroma and flavor profiles can change notably between the initial seed generation and the first clonal cutting round, even in stable environments. A few key factors that can contribute to this: Flowering Maturity - Flowers from juvenile seed plants often have simpler, less developed terpene and flavonoid profiles versus more mature flowers from cloned plants. Epigenetic Shifts - The seed plant adapts epigenetically to its environment, altering expression of genes involved in secondary metabolite production. Clones partially inherit these expression patterns. Mutation - Random mutations arising in the seed plant may affect terpene or flavonoid biosynthetic pathways, changing aromatic profiles. Clones will carry new mutations. Pathogen Effects - Hidden viral infections or endophytes in the seed plant can metabolically impact scent and flavor in subtle ways that get passed to cuttings. Telescoping - Accelerated flowering time in clones may alter developmental regulation of floral biosynthetic pathways. Stress Effects - Cloning inflicts wound stress that may temporarily stimulate production of certain aroma compounds. Telomere Length - Clones lose small amounts of telomeric DNA each round, while seeds reset length. Evidence of this in hops. Environment plays a key role as well, but genetic and biochemical changes acquire over time also impact phenotype.
@Benjamin-u7f
@Benjamin-u7f Жыл бұрын
There is evidence that clonal plant propagules derived from cuttings can experience a gradual shortening of telomeres over successive generations: Telomeres are protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that naturally shorten with each cell division due to the end replication problem. Sexual reproduction resets telomere length in plants when gamete cells fuse to form a zygote. However, vegetative propagation via cuttings involves mitotic cell division without sexual recombination. Therefore, any loss of telomeric DNA in the parent plant can carry over to the clonal offspring to some degree. Studies on crops like potatoes, hops, and cassava have measured decreasing telomere length in clonal lineages propagated over multiple generations by cutting. The rate of telomere attrition varies across species and circumstances, but a general trend of shorter telomeres is observed in aged clone lines. Eventually, telomere shortening may contribute to reduced vigor, growth rate, and lifespan in severely aged clones.

I pollinated a Skunk variety from KC Brains with pollen from a "Rare Darkness" male from Rare Dankness, both parent plants were gassy/skunky but the seeds that came from the cross tastes like roses or flower petals. I told some people and they were like "wtf? That sounds like potpourri..." So I gave them a sample and they realized it was floral gas, not granny's body spray 😂 They were like "Yoooo! That was fire!!! You got any more?" It's like a OG/Skunk with a super floral overtone, like roses or hibiscus or something like your standing in the garden eating petals 😂

The environment and experiences of a plant can induce epigenetic changes that alter how genes are expressed without changing the DNA sequence itself. This can be passed to clonal propagules and offspring to some degree: * Keeping a cannabis mother plant smaller through pruning and small pots, for example, may trigger epigenetic adaptations to the restricted space, such as reduced apical dominance. *Cuttings taken from this mother could inherit some of these epigenetic traits, exhibiting similarly compact growth even when not pot-bound themselves. *However, once separated, the cuttings will start adapting epigenetically to their own new environment as well over time. *Seeds produced by the mother may inherit some epigenetic markers that convey the tendency for short stature. *But the seeds will also have genetic shuffling and undergo their own epigenetic responses as they grow, so may not exhibit the mother's traits as strongly. Everytime the plants cells reproduce, epigenetics can be at play. Clones and seeds from a mother plant can inherit some epigenetic traits acquired during the mother's life, but this tends to get overlaid by their own epigenetic adaptations as they experience new conditions. The degree of epigenetic inheritance varies case by case. Overall, the genotype remains most determinative for long term traits.
@BreedersSyndicate
@BreedersSyndicate Жыл бұрын
Again, shockingly helpful and well put. Epigenetics has been something my brain basaaarely grasps and the papers and studies for cannabis are minimal. What you’re saying does fall in line with everything I’ve seen the last many years. I’m learning that even though I’m a fuckuo, because I fucked up so much for so long, I ended up with some decent data points to draw educated conclusions From.

@@BreedersSyndicate most of genetics is much easier when the correct anaolgies get applied to the varying concepts that are most influencial in breeding. Once you get those in your mind it becomes real easy to sift through the deep stuff because your mind is shifting between visualizations that reflect the information being learned. For example: Dont think of that marble visualaztion that cannabis breeders pass along on social media. But rather imagine beaded necklaces. So now when I tell you that each bead is a gene and that genes generally dont transfer to offspring bead by bead or marble by marble.... they tend to transfer to offspring as long strings of beads... it is easier to understand. This is why you tend to see "parental" types in your offspring more often than seeing lots of of completely new combinations in the offspring that dont reflect parental traits (which is called a recombination event and happens during meosis). Now to explain the "f2" uniquiness we would just build off this or related anaologies.

I’ve spent so much $ chasing a good blueberry and still can’t find anything close to the blueberry we had in 2003. Im not a breeder and when I do find the blueberry terp we’re looking for we would love to hire you to help us breed something. We have a mimosa X zkittles that is absolutely incredible but want to breed her to a great blueberry but get the exact candied oranges mixed with that blueberry terp without losing either. It’s way above my pay grade but I think it’s something that you would bd into once you see how crazy the mimosa X zkittles is.

So I have a few responses for you but they’re long winded For blueberry terps most of the bonnet stuff even hybrids kicks it heavy - true blueberry jam terps. However when crossed to anything orange, it’s a crapshoot. Mimosa anything is a real downside to any hybrid because it has tangie / cali o in it. That’s a terp killer. It can be terpy but it’s the main terp you’ll ever see from then on out. Bubbleberry and Cherry Berry kill it outdoor in any environment. But there’s stuff like Blue Bonnet F2 and Bx1 that are more consistent for Blueberry only terps

You should do the reviews of cuts and compared with the old school. Also, you and csi should make a book on the experiences of growing and breeding s1's. Doesnt have to be a sciency book.

Does not have to be a book either, I guess.

Can you tell us how you pop seeds? With my own seeds I have no problems. Seed bank seeds can be tricky. Why is that?

U can change genes 🧬 if stress plant all time while growing or sickness does same

You don’t change genes, but you do affect the plant epigenetic last with stress - trigger hormonal responses etc. you can’t “change genes” that way however. It’s not even debatable and pretty solid science behind it. Epigenetics - the other story

Really dig you guys, hope to grow my own. I really don't like the "traditional" guys around my area, I mostly go to legal spots, Cannabiotix is really the only brand that brings back memories. Also, Imo Diamonds from a disposable are not the best. I prefer "live Resin" or "rosin" I think brands have mastered the art of making formulas. I would say the year 2012 and prior, wax was more potent as well as Hash and vape pens. I had a pure vape that made me so gonzo I couldn't see straight
