I have been building wheels off and on for the last 20 years and I find it one of the most enjoyable mechanical things to do on a bike apart from riding them. I really prefer to be fully stoned when doing it and by myself with a bit of old blues playing in the background. Keep the good work up and the great videos.

Good vid Josh.You might laugh at this;Years ago, early 70's, I had a '64 Bonnie with some loose spokes at the rear wheel. A buddy of mine told me all the spokes had to make the same "note" and it'd all be good.I was eighteen and a rank amateur and spent hours "tuning up" the spokes by ear, never once looking.When I was finished the wheel resembled an egg. I didn't know a damn thing about doing it right.

Just ignore the seam. You won't see or feel it once you mount it on the bike. Machining it can weaken the weld, which can become dangerous.

Right on Josh...Thanks for that. I will get it the best I can and mount the tire. Have a good one...

I didn't know it was Chris Isaak. I just smile for the camera.hahaha. Thanks for finding out. Lacing is great to learn, especially for dirtbikes. Good luck

I use sound and feel. I tend to be a bit old fashion. Plus, I happen to have a built in torque wrench! When you do it enough, you just know. Thanks for checking us out. -Josh

Cool video Josh. I have a truing question... I am lacing up new Buchanan stainless spokes for my '70 A65T . I bought brand new Akront/Morad alloy shouldered rims. I haven't torqued anything yet but the wheel spins true axially and radially by eye. The welded or fused joint on the rim has a good bump in it,(axially up and down) maybe around .100" . My question is, do you think that torquing and truing will take this out or is it sometimes neccessary to machine the weld joint down a little?

Laced my first wheel when I was 14 because I didn't know I could not do it therefore I succeeded! That was 43 years ago one of these days I'm going to lace a wheel again.

Hey, at what stage do you oil the nipples? straight away before being loosely assembled?

I oil the nipples first so that the threads get covered. It's a special lube that acts like an anti-seize. Love the story Eric. Responces like yours is why I'm doing this.

on filing the hubs to make the spokes fit... "there's always something with these old bikes". Well maybe there's something with the spokes, the new spokes. rofl.
@Metal-Possum10 жыл бұрын
Yes, but reusing spokes is frowned upon, at least with bicycles. Tensioning, untensioning, tensioning again causes fatigue, which leads to failure.
@statingthe_obvious630910 жыл бұрын
Alex Paulsen my point was that using new spokes should fit without filing.

I built several hundred bicycle wheels over the years and I agree - this is a total waste of time. No discussion of spoke cross patterns, spoke layout around valve hole, layout and orientation of angled rim holes, use of lubricant at rim hole junction, use of lock tight on spoke threads, shape of spokes at junction with hub, wheel dishing to account for non centered hub flanges, etc. And the guy openly professes not to enjoy the work, too! Sheesh!
