In this video we take a look at Oregon Fancy Jasper.
I show you quite clearly what is and is not high quality Jasper.
The highest quality Jasper is formed near epithermal vents. The further from the source of silica rich fluids, the chalkier the appearance of the stone.
At the vent source Jasper formation can take some unexpected turns in formation. Highly transparent chalcedony forms around eroded and rounded nodules of silt to form plume agate, and even stain light colored silts to produce spongy formations that resemble sponge candy filled with a contrasting colored filling. We'll show off some of those examples in another video.
Another misconception rock hounds have to combat is that Jasper only comes in dull tones. Jasper is found in some of the brightest hues known to nature.

Wow! Such beautiful Stones I love Jasper. A very good friend of mine that is not a rockhound went to the coast at Brookings and I told her about the Jasper's in the river and she did her best to bring me back some rocks. I think I have about a 50/50 of the first kind that you showed and nice stuff. I think I'm going to convert her to a rockhound. Thank you for another beautiful video that I know I'm going to watch probably a few more times just because I love looking at beautiful stones. I hope J is getting better.

Very cool video David. I love how jasper can be so many different things. It can even replace wood. your talk of it being more pure next to hydrothermal vents seems correct. when I found the source of it in my area, it does seem to become more agate like and more highly silicated near the source, and farther away from the source it becomes pitted and chalky, very interesting. I have found only 1 piece of blue jasper in Oregon, actually I found it just a few weeks ago. It is my best piece by far! I will never tumble or cut it.

It's accurate because I took the time to exercise my journalism muscles to compile verbatim quotes from USGS, Museum of Natural History, and a few dozen Graduate Jeweler Gemologists. That stuff, being rather dry, doesn't get included in videos. I'll do another video on the blue jasper creek. I found some access to it a few miles upstream from our usual filming site.

Jasper is such cool stuff! Thank you for some nice descriptions of various types and colors. I'm hoping to get to the Rogue very soon, once a hip that's giving me grief gets a good talking to and I hope not surgery. Ah, the joys of many birthdays. 🙄 Thank you for showing us all those cool rocks.

Thanks for sharing! I'm having a hard time finding informative videos about rocks in western Oregon. People seem to be unwilling to share their knowledge and just settle for showing videos of pictures of rocks they've found which is kind of pointless for the person trying to learn!

I hound all river jaspers in Oregon.. Mine is mostly from the Willamette river area in the valley... You have some great colors there... I tumble it all ...

It's hard with the Willamette because the water is swift in the main channels. Material is blown downstream fairly quickly. Side creeks in the foothills hold the best potential. Although, south of Cottage Grove near Bohemia, you might be able to do some crystal hunting.

Hey David, I still dream about that red orbicular jasper/agate that you showed us not too long ago. That was a gorgeous specimen. Thank you for the good information today.
