That's not how it works. Fingerprint sensors work pretty much similar to smartphone touchscreens, they 'sense' you by reading the tiny electrical currents generated by your heart running through your skin. That's why if your fingers are wet, smartphone's screens and fingerprint sensors can't read your fingerprints because it messes with the conductivity of your fingers. Similar to if you chop someone's finger off. Since the finger is no longer powered by a heart, it's not conductive either so it won't work like in the movies.

@@obamatxk Google Pay the screen just has to be on, not unlocked and not authenticated in anyway. This might sound odd but it's exactly how Contactless cards work. No authentication whatsoever. But in the UK the limit is £30 and you're asked for your pin every 5 transactionsg plus banks are legally obliged to give you any money back. I think Samsung Pay requires your fingerprint. I don't use it because in the UK Google Pay is better (NFC is everywhere).

Mazen Mady But it’s something you wear (more convenient to have with you), and serves at least a handful of other purposes. As it stands, it’s still prudent to bring a wallet along when you go out, but contactless has become accepted in a lot of places now. Restaurants are the main holdout, from what I’ve seen, and you wouldn’t be able to use this thumbprint card at a restaurant anyway.

I mean who hasn’t been knocked back at the till area because the price of your shop has exceeded thirty pounds? But what about thumb print readers at till points? Then we won’t need a card at all. If national banks have accounts linked to thumb prints, and variations between thumb prints are so minimal they’re impossible to mix up; bank account the finger print, link it to a payment system, install print readers at till points, loose the card.

This is due to store limits. There is 2 contactless limits: 1 - The one set by the bank. Exceeding this limit, will require authentication, ergo, contactless+PIN. Then, 2 - The one set by aquirer, ergo the card reader. This is set depending on which business that is run, and this will prevent contactless alltogether over a specific limit. The card reader limit is however usually bypassable, I usually ask the cashier to split the transaction into multiple consequitive ones when using mobile phone as payment. It works because in most cash registers, you can push "Card" multiple times, and add card payments for the leftover sum.

@@rohannim3100 I agree with you about the chip. But as for NFC it was actually embraced very good in the last 6+ years in Europe, Asia and especially in Australia so it's just USA being a bit stubborn when it comes to new technology lol. Yes you could lose your wallet but lets be real around here...how often did you lose charge on your phone when out and about and how many times did you lose wallet? I'm not saying people should JUST use cards but what I'm trying to say that with a combination with your phone it's a guarantee that you will have a way of paying for basic necessities even when your phone dies on you. The future without wallet? Perhaps if we will able to charge our phones where ever we are without carrying a bulky battery bank. Or perhaps we start paying with our biometric signature like a fingerprint, Chinese have actually done that in some cities. But if we start doing that and someone finds a way to copy your fingerprint then you can't just "cancel your fingerprint" right? One thing is for sure, we could debate this topic for hours hehe :P

The Card is way more secure then mobile pay. On a mobile phone you have other apps and data. Which makes it possible to hack a transaction. On a card, you have nothing but a secure crypt chip without any app or other data. The fingerprint sensor Fingerprint Cards`s FPC1321 don´t read the fingerprint, but only read Distinct Area Detection (DAD) algorithm of the finger. the algorithm locates distinct areas in the three-dimensional fingerprint image derived from the sensor. This is 99.999 % secure

For all you people saying "just pay with your phone" well it's not uncommon for our phones to lose charge so even more reason to carry a card with you since we all carry our ID with us anyway. And for the people saying "oh it has your fingerprint on it, so if you lose it then crooks will have that information", do you really think they didn't think of such scenario? That information is encrypted as heck so even if you lost it I doubt anyone could retrieve the info.

With every development in so called payment security comes ever creative criminals who can crack the system. On paper (I know how archaic right!) this sounds good, quicker, less bulky than a phone, no pin to recall, but honestly having to stick your finger over the area every time I think would get annoying, and might not necessarily work every time.

So what's the difference between holding your finger over your fingerprint sensor on your mobile and on a card. This is a natural move as you typically hold the card on the fingerprint scanner. And yes it works every time compared to mobiles as it uses a 3D sesor cord and not like many mobiles a 2D sensor which is much less reliable

This is interesting to see because I would never have expected Natwest to do this. Over the years the banks in the UK have pretty much refused to do anything innovative and it's only in the past few years that they've even had fully functional banking apps. I remember when iPhone 5 or 6 first came out and apps had to adjust to the new iPhone screen size, it took nearly a year for Natwest to push out an update for it. I think because of the recent mobile banking app phenomenon, where completely mobile banking apps like Starling have hit the market and started gaining momentum, the banks have been pretty much been forced to be more innovative. If anyone has used Starling or Monzo, you'd know how superior they are in functionality to the leading high street banks and it's definitely the future. I'm interested to see what the future holds, I can see us moving towards a completely cashless society.

The only advantage this has is the spending limit (which should be increased when using phones) and it can be used in ATMs or at non-contactless terminals. I wonder how durable it is. Have they changed the silver numbers which are near impossible to see in certain lighting conditions?

@BBC Click could you ask the Royal Bank of Scotland to go through a deeper explanation on the security measures? Considering the questions you asked and the answers given, I'm very keen on saying that it checks only 2 things: pattern of the fingertip and if the sensor receives an electrical input. To be more precise I believe they check: i) if the fingerprint pattern checks [which can be copied (by principal duct tape was not a bad example actually)] and ii) if it receives an electrical input (which can be mimicked by using a small battery or finger over a slim silica mould).
