We tried Teff one year....... Came up in 3 stands....... got 1 cut...... Sold New Seeder and bought Sprigging equip to plant Hybrid Bermuda Grass..... Which once established last forever.........
@FarmingInsider Жыл бұрын
We will establish all these fields after the teff. Just a filler

That is what we did.....Hybrid Bermuda grass........

This was good. I actually did the same thing on a smaller scale. I had 2 bags of Teff from 2 years ago and mixed it with 2 new bags of Teff and I notill in thin spots to fill in

It’s hard to let seed go to waste lol. I’m hoping it works well

@@FarmingInsider It'll work well. At this point I'm praying for some rain. My orchard grass is already starting to go dormant and haven't gotten a second cutting yet due to how dry its been.

we plant teff as a low sugar horse hay alternative to alpha.. and it is too hot to grow alpha where we live. Teff grows like a champ in our hot and humid environment. 60 days of 100+ heat indexes and only two inches of rain since June 1st.. and we just completed our second cutting. You do have to roll the crap out of it. I think we drum rolled it six times. Only problem I have seen with it is that when young it doesn't recover well from being driven over. We had a couple of patches that died out along our tractor tire paths.

I tried Teff one year. It looks like really good hay. I found out if your animals only have Teff they’ll eat it some. If they get a choice of anything else, they’ll leave the Teff. If you’re selling it and not feeding it, it’s probably ok. Good luck with it.

It all depends on the maturity. If it gets a little old the animals back off. If it’s young then watch out, they can’t get enough

not sure if you've done this b4 but a sit down interview with dad to explain all the different types of hay, grass, straw you plant / harvest and what is the best and why each are important. Also why 1st harvest is more important than 2nd or 3rd. PLZ from a displaced Hoosier!

Great video. How did the Teff crop turn out? Thanks in advance.

What are you going to use for a floor in your new hay shed?
@bladewiper Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Considering this is a bit of a speciality crop, is there a premium added to the price compared to your normal hay. Liked the bear, kind of a fat version of Bones.
@FarmingInsider Жыл бұрын
Yes, we can only charge what the market will tolerate but we hope to have a slight premium on it. It’s a tremendous amount of additional labor compared to conventional hay

Is teff a multi year crop? How many years will you harvest the hay before you go to alfalfa? Thanks.
@FarmingInsider Жыл бұрын
It is only a single season crop. It dies quickly at the first frost. We will try to get a cutting or 2 off of this and then seed a Timothy/orchard/alfalfa mix into the field this fall
