I made my own kit a few years ago for emergencies. Not for jumping out windows but for descending slopes etc. Same sterling hook but I use a small rescue 8 and mechanical prusik

how sure can you be that the hook will stay in place and won't slide off the wall?

Keep your hand on the hook until you can’t anymore and pray your body weight holds it in place. I’m not a fan of heights but I’d rather bail out than burn up.

There is a spike at the tip of the hook that digs into the windowsill. Weight from the firefighter should set it in and it should not come loose.
