I'm glad I watched your vid. I've been contemplating upgrading my old bench drill press with a mill drill for almost a year. But then I concluded that even though I do mill from time to time all I really needed at home was a better drill press. I like the fact that the bench model doesn't have all the menus to tab through (I can look up speeds in tables on the wall) and the floor version is way more than I needed anyway. So I pulled the trigger yesterday and picked it up. Beats the pants off my old machine and from what I can tell most! Powerful, easy to use, quiet and runout on the taper in the quill is 0.0007". Bonus, you CAN tap with this machine. You can't use a hand tap but with a spiral point tap (gun tap) and the depth stop/auto reverse feature you just power tap the same way you do on a Bridgeport mill . . . only it's easier since now I don't need to use two hands! Made two perfect 10-32 tapped holes into angle iron in seconds. I'm guessing this is faster than tapping mode on the Voyager model with hand taps.

Great presentation, thank you. I was pulling the trigger on a 17"Jet DP and this model showed up, I think I am in as well. The variable speed option at this price point is a fantastic bargain and has no changing belts, not to mention the ultra-fancy digital features. The Viking does come in a taller floor model #83706. Some reviewers have stated that tapping threads with this model should be much easier.

I consider the NOVA drill presses number 1 just like Sawstop for table saws. Just a quick note on the dept stop- you set it for 1/4 of an inch but it measures it from the forstner bit tip not the actual shearing action bit. Might need to adjust for that when drilling and needing a specific depth.

the 110V and 220V are the same, just a different plug. You could swap the plug on on this, or make a conversion cable. Unlike the Nova products that use the 1250W motor, this will stay 750W (1HP) at both 110V and 220V. The reverse function can also be used with sanding drums. For anyone watching now, there's a floor model of the Viking now, exact same unit, just a taller column and longer rack.

Re: 220V version. Looks like it's the same setup as the Nova Voyager - the only change needed to run it on 220-240VAC is to change the plug to the proper kind, usually a NEMA 6-15P for the U.S. (and Canada, AFAIK). The internals, like a lot of modern electronics, don't care. Whether 120 or 220, the manual says to use a 15 Amp surge suppressor since it is electronic.
@DesignCraftWorkshop
@DesignCraftWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's pretty much what is needed. New tail that's going to work with a 220v plug.
@steinbierz
@steinbierz Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I guess I don't understand the internal wiring of this that would allow just changing the plug to convert it to 220-240v. I read the same thing about the Nova Voyager drill press and assumed there must be more to it?
@williamivey5296
@williamivey5296 Жыл бұрын
@@steinbierz Apparently it's like a switching power supply, the input voltage isn't really important since it's all electronically converted to whatever the motor requires at any given moment anyway. (The motor is more like a giant stepper motor than a traditional tool motor.) Same power no matter the input voltage, just less current at the higher voltage. It's really an amazing tool - well worth the money. (Mine has the Viking head but with the floor length tube like the Voyager - I was running out of bench space.)

So do you leave it plugged in all the time like you would a computer? Or do you unplug it when you aren't using it ? Does it take long to power up? Looks potentially dangerous with your work piece and drill bit right in your face like that!

I have tried to get the answer to this from teknatool and failed. Please help me if you can. If the drill press is setup on a bench with a wall behind it and the base of the drill press is placed right next to the wall, is there enough room to turn the table handle? Assume the wall is vertical.

@@DesignCraftWorkshop Thanks for answering. I did think it would be very tight. My bench is 479mm wide and I use the front face of the bench as the back of a fence for my RAS so I cannot allow the base to protrude over the front of the bench. I just took delivery of my new Nova Viking and managed eventually to get it single handed up onto my bench. I would appreciate answers to two questions from anyone who has assembled one. 1) The table winding handle will not fit on the spindle more than 1/16 inch. Whilst this is enough to operate it, I wonder whether I have done something wrong or whether it is a manufacturing defect. 2) I cannot use the drill at all as the display shows "chuck guard open". Is it possible to use the drill without the chuck guard? and if not what might I have done wrong in connecting the chuck guard electrics? Thanks in anticipation of an answer.

I had never heard of this brand. I assume this machine is from China. Now how is the support from the source.

It's actually a New Zealand owned company. They have factories in the US. So far the support has been great and I've haven't had any issues with the machine. Very well made.

You're not supposed to say it's your first and last if you've had drill presses before. 🤪
