You can restore your hull integrity at one of the types of shops in systems. They have a little shiny effect on the map, it costs unobtanium to do it though, once you find a shop that does that you can spend much longer in a system because getting hit can be easily restored. I just fly to all the shops until I find it. Hope this helps!

Uhh, they don't seem like they want to kill you. I think they just don't realise that they (being made of lava) would hurt you if they touch you.
