Really beautiful and interesting presentation. Have never been in this area. I get my love of history (and maps) from my dad. I was also lucky enough to have some very good British history teachers. You put a lot of work into your presentations.

There were plenty of ‘cities’ or large towns, Colchester just happens to be the earliest one that got a mention in Roman documents.
@AlexTheHistoryGuy9 ай бұрын
Indeed, I tend to research from various sources which all tend to say conflicting things about "the first city" in Britain, but Colchester is generally accepted to be the first proper city or first official capital of Roman England so for arguments sake I decided to run with it haha.

I really want them to stop building things, it is a lovely land scape but it is constantly being destroyed. They should take down modern buildings not being used, grow grass and trees. If they build something, they should do it as our ancestors did to restore the history loved so much.
@AlexTheHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
I often wish people would put the time and effort and artistic flair into architecture like they once did, but unfortunately there's simply no reason for them to do it anymore since Britain has nothing left to prove to the world. We used to prove that we were a religious centre by building glorious cathedrals and churches, we showed that we are a heavily defended country by building giant imposing castles, and we showed the world that we are a powerful empire by building giant intricate buildings like the Westminster parliament & the natural history museum. In the modern day we have nothing to say so we don't build anything worth looking at.

@@AlexTheHistoryGuy it is so sad, they all blame the world for England falling. It is actually us, no one cares about our land anymore, they sell everything they can get their hands on, they destroy everything good.

@@AlexTheHistoryGuy if we took pride in our world and ourselves again, everyone would all be well.
@AlexTheHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
It's a tricky one because the times when we were most proud of our country was either when we were committing atrocities in third world countries, launching crusades against people who believed in different gods, or when we were bombing entire cities into oblivion. Now we don't do that anymore so instead the governments just sell off every industry we had to line their own pockets and now there's really nothing Great about "Great" Britain anymore haha. Oh well, I'll just continue devoting my channel to the beauty that has been created due to Britain's history ☺️

@@AlexTheHistoryGuy yes 100%. You carry on, you videos are really good and not many people talk about Colchester
@kubhlaikhan2015 Жыл бұрын
Well it was a great video until 410AD, at which point you relate the orthodox historical nonsense about German and Viking invaders - which didn't happen. The troubles at the close of the Roman period are all to do with civil wars for control of the empire or large parts of it. These are well documented and archaeologically validated and it is into that context that the tales of King Arthur make sense - because he is a unifying pro-Roman leader, whose claim to his title is imperial not tribal. By imposing a false context on the period, you entirely fail to mention the glaringly obvious fact that Camulo-dunum translates as "the fortress of Camelot". And what more powerful statement about Arthur could there have been than to capture and reinstate the original Roman capital of Britain and make it his seat of power. Colchester's history is rich and long but you missed out the best bit of it by far.

Something wrong with this narrator's voice, too sharp, swallowing the ends of his words and yet too close to the microphone. Cannot listen, as much as I was looking forward to hearing the full history of Colchester.
@AlexTheHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
New mic coming soon! This has always been just a passion project and new tech for recording/narration is very expensive so I'm slowly upgrading the things I use to make videos - if I raise my voice too much I get a lot of noise interference with my current mic
